The Global Warming thread.

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Yes, the graph below is faked:

There is an oblique mention of "Science™" but no link to the alleged article despite several links to other sources. Is it possible that "Science™" does not draw the conclusion that the rightwing Federalist implies?

It seems that the source may be Roy Spencer, "one of the few climate contrarians with real credentials." I wonder why the Federalist didn't say so?
Yes, the graph was fabricated by Roy Spencer, and yes, he manipulated the data to give a dishonest picture:

Roy Spencer's latest deceit and deception
Let's look at how he's conned his denier fans. Below I've plotted the CMIP5 composite mean against UAH and GISTemp using a 1981-2010 baseline, which is what UAH normally uses, and then I'll discuss what Roy Spencer has effectively done:

Solar Panels Drain the Sun’s Energy, Experts Say

A bit more subtle than the usual "source" for such an article. Well done. Wonder how long before Cruz or the even-stupider Sarah The Pooh Palin start offering this in public appearances.

Surely that's a satire website like The Onion? Right? Right??

EDIT: OH THANK GOD, it is. It reads exactly like right wing talking points, that's what got me.

Definitely more subtle than The Onion. Too subtle for the teafools to grasp it. Just a matter of days before some teatard (R) representative cites this as some sort of talking point.

Idiots is idiots. But given the sheer lunacy of some the shit the RW publishes in all seriousness, perhaps we can charge these folks with the lesser crimes of gullibility and failure to maintain an accurate, working bullshit detector.

Interesting timing, after last night's Cosmos episode on coal, the runaway greenhouse effect on Venus, the direct links between carbon dioxide emissions and temperature on Earth, and energy alternatives. It not only utterly blew away the myth that global warming isn't happening, but explained why we know that the warming isn't a natural cycle.

Kentucky State Senator: Mars Has the Same Temperature as Earth, so Climate Change is a Hoax

Damn. Just . . . damn.
I have often liked to think that many of these epically stupidass things are uttered by people who really know better, but are simply appealing in the simplest way possible to an electorate demographic that is backward, ignorant, uneducated and thoroughly proud of it. But the evidence indicating these politicians and pundits are truly as stupid and brutish as their electorate is rapidly piling up.

That's what I say!...along with......the stupid...oh! the stupid.

Example:
"Just to point out the obvious, the average temperature on Earth is about 61° Fahrenheit. Mars, on the other hand, is -80° Fahrenheit.
(I’m sure Smith just round(ed) that 140° difference down to 0.) And if you look at long-term trends, the temperature on Earth has indeed been rising."

Rising seas clearly evident along SC coast
There were a couple of stories on the net concerning rising seas on the east coast; this was one I'll go with.

I went to Google Earth and zoomed in on Georgetown, SC. Using the sliding scale, I went to the area as seen in 1994, then back to 2013 when the last shot was taken; switching back and forth between time frames. To be honest, I couldn't tell a hill of beans difference in the photos as depicted by the above story.

However, I'm not dumb enough to think that sea levels aren't rising; I've have seen first-hand evidence upon my visits to the different shores.

Vrede wrote:"Do you still believe that humans aren't the cause, that there's nothing we can do about it and that we shouldn't even try?"
I don't think I've never said that humans weren't the cause; I have said that humanity plays a large role in speeding up Earth's natural cycle. I've also said that the earth is going through a cycle that's it's been through before, and humanity has no way of stopping natural occurrences.

Human-caused pollution around the globe plays a large part in the speed of GW, and the pitiful efforts of the U.S. will have no effect on the halt of same; i.e., every single human alive that is able to at least crawl, must have a part in any effort, and that just ain't gonna happen.

Global Warming is what it is, and what it does is what it'll do; our efforts, if they could be implemented, would only slow down the inevitable.

Ok, I'm unscientific. Start on the graph long 'bout 2400 B.C.

Image

I suppose one good course of action to slow down AGW would be to force each country that has them to cork up the mouths of their volcanoes......
Hawaii could mobilize their population to shoot water (which they have plenty of) down the mouth of Kilauea volcano to put out it's fire...
Heard on the news that Mt. Fuji in Japan has been rumbling; ain't erupted in 10,000 or so years....
We could turn off the steam vents at Yellowstone.....

Do any of these "natural occurrences" ring a bell?

Just so you know, your drawing is pure fiction and somewhat of a joke.

It's debunked at at sci.rutgers.edu among other ways, by simply comparing it with known data. As for the qualifications of the two who made the drawing:
Finally, if you look up Cliff Harris and Randy Mann, you will find that they are two guys who run a website http://www.longrangeweather.com/About-Us.htm and that neither are trained as a climatologist or a metereologist, unless one considered appearing on television to report weather or studying geology to be training for such a field.
There are plenty of other sites that back this up: (The drawing makes an appearance in the page's comments, and is quickly debunked.) And again:
The provenance of the drawing (it couldnt be called a graph) appears to be "climatologist" Cliff Harris. His background is insurance law and has no science publications.
Interviews with him are more sympathetic:
Cliff Harris, co-creator of the above graph, is a self-taught climatologist who according to an article in The Spokesman Review (February 26, 2007) believes the Bible is loaded with clues on predicting the weather.

Harris told the newspaper, "I do believe in a period of extreme global warming. That will be in the tribulation period. That's when the real global warming will come in. Those of us who are believers, we're looking forward to it."
Harris BTW, is also a chemtrails conspiracy theorist.

If you want to see accurate, credible data, you'll find a full graph with actual figures on the temperature axis on this page. With a proper citation to the source data. It only goes back 2000 years, but there's plenty to compare with your source's drawing. And it shows a different picture.

So you "cork up the mouth of a volcano" by pouring water on it. Which - being REALLY optimistic - might solidify the top few feet of lava. But does nothing to stop the pressure below it from building....

It would make a good MythBusters episode, complete with the explosion at the end.

BTW, apparently the CO2 coming from the all the world's volcanos is fairly constant. We haven't found a link between it and climate change. We've certainly seen a cause and effect between massive eruptions and *weather* - short-term stuff, even if global - but that's not the same thing.
Mr.B wrote:Heard on the news that Mt. Fuji in Japan has been rumbling; ain't erupted in 10,000 or so years....
306 years, actually. It's always been considered an active volcano.

Plenty of experience in deceit?

Send it in, see if they will take it on!

CO2 ain't the only thing being spewed from volcanos, mud pits, and such.

I guess that means it's still got 9,694 years to go! :D Seriously though, if Fuji pulled a Krakatoa stunt, it could do some serious damage to life, property, and air quality.
