Returning to the original topic, back in the day the mission for my unit was pretty limited and well-defined. We caught any signal, voice or data, that was within range of our antennas, that looked a lot like those below. Then we sorted through those, discarding most of what we caught, to find those believed to be of value in keeping up with the antics of the Egyptians, Israelis, Syrians, Lebanese, etc., along with the occasional Soviet or Turkish embassy transmissions. We also copied international Telex - general civilian stuff. There was no email back then of course, nor was there anywhere for anybody to post their naked body parts - well, except for the occasional ass sent via fax. But there was a lot of personal stuff on Telex, some of which was entertaining for techs and analysts fighting boredom. But I don't recall any instance in which anybody would have taken any of the messages out of the compound or used them in any way that could have been harmful to the sender or recipient. I'd be interested in hearing from anybody claiming their life was affected by Snowden's collegues.
