Asheville police department shoots itself with radar gun
I think it's hilarious that the Buncombe County District Attorney is having to dismiss hundreds of traffic citations for speeding because of the APD having let the certifications on their equipment and the certifications of the officers who use that equipment lapse. To me, this is a glaring and inexcusable situation. Or maybe it's just a case of thinking that you're above the law. In the meantime, speed at will in Asheville for now I guess.

The APD is a total chaos. Maybe Chief Anderson didn't cause all the problems, but he has solved none. He's an arrogant jerk who never should have been hired in the first place. A good rule in selecting police chiefs is that unless you're selecting internally, never hire somebody for whom the job is the biggest s/he's ever had.

Yeah, the chief seems to think highly of himself. I've often wondered why this type of job isn't filled from within the department. It would seem that a fellow officer who's known to the rest of the force would be a better choice than an outsider. Sure, there may be a few officers who would disagree or be jealous of one of their own becoming chief, but I doubt there would be as many (44) as signed the petition against the current chief. If I'm not mistaken, fire departments generally do promote from within. I've not heard of any firemen grumbling about the fire chief, but this may also exist.

Yeah, promotion from within is usually better, when things are going well, but when the department is already effed up, anybody inside is probably some part of the mess. Remember the evidence room debacle? Unlawful firing lawsuits? Sexual harassment lawsuit? On the other hand, somebody from Greenville or wherever Anderson came from wrote in the the A-CT and said "don't you people check references? We could have told you what he's like."

Re: Asheville police department shoots itself with radar gun
I just noticed I misspelled Asheville in the title of this and don't know how to fix it. Yeah, i do remember the evidence room debacle. I am familiar with the security system in that building; about 15 years ago I was in there in an official capacity related to my job. The place was practically new, almost empty, and in no way resembled the photos that have been on the news. I even met that Smith guy who was in charge of it more than once. I wish to state as a matter of fact that I have no missing evidence and that there is an abject lack of evidence that I do. I must have missed that letter to the editor about Anderson; strange, but seemingly prophetic as well. I do seem to remember that Anderson's wife and son both also worked for the city at one time, maybe even now. I wonder how all that's going...... and I think I just corrected the spelling of Asheville. I think I'd make a good police chief; I know bullshit when I see it, I'm detail oriented, tend to be a perfectionist.....never mind.O Really wrote:Yeah, promotion from within is usually better, when things are going well, but when the department is already effed up, anybody inside is probably some part of the mess.
