It's a dumb comparison since I've used the phrase to describe both of you running from your latent tendencies and Mr.B running from fact and logic. I've run from neither who I am nor challenges to any of my posts.

However, I did choose to weigh the potential risk to my job over staying in this forum. If you want to call that "run shrieking away", so be it. You can both prove that you're braver than me. Leave all of your posts in place and post your real full names in the open forum. Then, homerfobe, you tell us your hometown and employer while unemployed Mr.B tells us, say, the name of his church. I won't hold my breath.

My real ID has been learned by Mr.B, something that is intolerable to me. I don't know how. I have a career here, this is an "at will" employment state, some of my views are not very PC in con NC, and I don't trust Mr.B as far as I can throw him. I have asked banni to close my account and delete all of my posts.

It has been fun. If any of you lefties want to stay in touch, ask banni, neoplacebo, JTA or k9nanny to forward me an email with your contact info. I'll reply directly or not as feels right at the time.

His PM to me was passive-aggressive, not the completely conciliatory one he claims.
He already was being "unscrupulous enough" to refer several times to my real ID in open forum, with enough information that I had never made public or communicated privately to him for anyone with malicious intent and basic research skills to do me harm. It's not like Mr.B is genius enough to have figured it all out from the forum. Someone gave him clues that he was able to follow.
I did not "sow" anything. I have never been intentionally dishonest like he routinely is. I have declined several opportunities to learn his real ID, even when visiting him at work years ago to play a practical joke. I still don't know his name or care to.
He earned my lack of trust by being a serial liar and sleazeball, period. billy.pilgrim is 100% correct even if there were no Mr.B lies in Mr.B's PM to me.

So, here's the situation I faced -

Mr.B was already revealing personal details openly. I ignored it since it was possible he was guessing. However, the moment I knew that he wasn't guessing I had to face the fact that he would continue doing so. Then, either he would get angry and petty enough to share my years of uncensored political and social views with my bosses or he had made it or would make it easy enough, as he well knows, for someone else to.

Does anyone really believe that, say, Mr.B's bigot-buddy homerfobe has the maturity or ethics to resist the temptation . . . if he had the brains to figure out Mr.B's clues, that is?
How about AndyJackson or any of the CPF wingnuts that lurk here?
Or, does it pass the sniff test that Mr.B put in all the effort to learn my ID without the intention of ever using it? Back when he got put in time out for a week for physically threatening me he even hinted that he knew more about how to find me than he had revealed.

Uh-uh, according to my patients, coworkers and bosses I am an excellent caregiver, one of the best they have, and I love the work I do. As much fun as this forum has been, neither it nor arguing with a bigot like Mr.B or laughing at a vulgar child like homerfobe are worth even the possibility of risking that.

Every social group needs somebody to step up and be the glue that keeps things going. To think up things to do, to check up on group members who haven't been around lately, to introduce people to each other, to organize dinners, parties, whatever, to delegate and encourage participation and make sure everybody is included...yada. Vrede had that role in this group. He was willing to respond to most any post, from the reasonable to the ridiculous, and had the patience to hold feet to the fire that would be much happier trampling roughshod over facts and logic. He created storylines that the rest of us could enjoy and join in, and whenever you wanted an actual intellectual discourse, he was good for that too.

The strength of this forum that differs from others is also its weakness - that it has a limited number of active members. But as such, we're familiar with each other as something close to real people even though we generally don't know each other IRL. In a way, it's like knowing characters in a TV show or a book - you know them well, feel like they're your friends even though you know they're not "real." If the show kills them off, you feel a real sense of loss. The key factor in all that working is not to confuse and not to blend virtual and IRL reality. Although some on this forum (and others) use their IRL identity, most do not. Those who do not undoubtedly have their own reasons, and those reasons should be respected. In my case, I'm pretty much the same person online as IRL, but I don't discuss irrelevant controversial issues like politics, religion, etc. with my clients. And I wouldn't want identifiable content lying around to introduce those issues into my client relationship. I wouldn't want somebody trying to attract one of my clients to be able to say, "look, here's your lawyer "O Really" making fun of Easter" or some comment taken out of the context of the forum discussion.

As Banni said, to even attempt to find the IRL identity of a group member and then to use that identity as an "ace in the hole" is despicable. This, like all other forums, is a voluntary relationship, expected to be mutually entertaining and enjoyable for all. Forums are not real life - they're entertainment. If I am not happy with the way things are going, or if I find a member to be more offensive than I want to deal with, I can drop out. And I've done that for several forums before, like Topix. As offensive as our own "homo" is, I wouldn't try to expose his sorry ass to anyone IRL. I can just decline to read or respond to his posts.
