You know how sometimes when you wake up late at night and you don't feel like walking 5 feet to the bathroom to take a leak? Well that's where a piss jar comes in. It's a jar you keep by your bed side. When you wake up at 2AM and don't wanna get up, you whip out the ol' willy and bust out the piss jar and do your thing.

When I was little, we did have a covered pot that we used; (we had outdoor facilities) often referred to as a chamber pot or "thunder-mug".

I've used a jar in lieu of braving an outhouse in the middle of a subzero night. Bowls splash, and the jar's lid eliminates odor and accidental spills.
