Guns, race, religion, terror, wingnut thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

And Christians...

"We don't hate people because of their race," said Ancona. "We are a Christian organization."

And certainly not racists...

"We want to keep our race the White race," said Ancona. "We want to stay White. It's not a hateful thing to want to maintain White Supremacy."

I like the "Don't tread on me" flag too, and it pisses me off that the scummiest of political groups has hijacked it. It was originally the symbol of the first Marines, and another version, with stripes, was the precursor to the current US "stars and stripes." Teaparty assholes using that flag is way worse than sleazy redneck car dealers using "Old Glory" to sell Kias.
White supremacists have also tried to CO opt one of my favorite flags, the flag of the peoples technocratic republic of Vinland.

Which makes me sad because I really like that flag. Not sure if its seen as a racist flag yet. So maybe I can still fly it.

How's about we just meet in the middle with this confederate flag issue and do a redesign:

Now the confederate flag is tolerant.

There is some question as to whether the Clinton-Gore Confederate
flag buttons are the real deal or not. To be continued.... -0-?

If you really stop and think, this whole Confederate flag thing is a silly "spittin' & pissin' " issue.

An immature, neglected, sociopath, whose tattooed daddy wears nipple rings, shoots up a church killing 9 people; photos found at his home shows him waving a Confederate flag and his jacket has other "racist" themed flags sewn on it.

Suddenly, because of a kid named Dylann Roof, the mad rush is on to remove Confederate flags and anything that resembles a Confederate flag, or has ever had a connection to slavery, from existence. (By the way, there doesn't seem to be a rush to do away with the flags depicted on Dylann's jacket, wonder why that is?) WLOS has even reported that "some" (un-named) Black leaders has suggested the Vance Monument be torn down.; state governors are pushing for moves to remove Confederate flags from specialty license plates; and the lists goes on ....

So therein, the whole problem of "racism" and other issues that ever dealt with racism, will magically disappear overnight with the total elimination of anything connected to, or even remotely looking like a Confederate flag, and we'll all be sitting around holding hands singing Kumbayah. Yeah right ....

Most people in the US wouldn't recognize those flags. I didn't recognize the old Rhodesian flag. But if someone flies one of them its clear why they're doing it, since they represent apartheid era SA and Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe)

Robert Mugabe and his regime are racist scum, so I wonder if that makes the new Zimbabwe flag a racist symbol as well?

Interestingly, SC explicitly objected to northern "states rights". Its elite didn't like that they couldn't bring their slaves with them when summering in the Hamptons, that escapees were not returned and that anti-slavery activism was tolerated.

In 2003, Howard Dean got into hot water for wanting to be the candidate of "the guys with a Confederate flag on their pickup." I doubt anybody will pick up that particular mantle this year, even though the ridiculous Republicans rely heavily on that guy.

Amazon removed confederate flags from their search results, as did Google from their "shopping" search function.

Dear Gov. McCrory, Sen. Apodaca & Rep. McGrady,

I agree. Bubba can buy a slaver flag bumper sticker, our government should not be endorsing it.

General Lee From “Dukes of Hazzard” Losing Its Confederate Flag

Strom Thurmond’s son (State Sen. Paul Thurmond) calls for Confederate flag to come down
As South Carolina honors victims, Alabama lowers its flags

... Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley became the first southern governor to use his executive power to remove Confederate banners, as four flags with secessionist symbols were taken down Wednesday from a large monument to rebel soldiers outside that state's capitol.

"It has become a distraction all over the country right now," Bentley said. The iconic Confederate battle flag in particular "is offensive to some people because unfortunately, it's like the swastika; some people have adopted that as part of their hate-filled groups."

But in South Carolina, making any changes to "heritage" symbols requires a two-thirds supermajority of both houses of the state legislature, and while lawmakers voted overwhelmingly for a debate later this summer, few wanted to risk ugly words during a week of funerals.

Brought to the capitol in a horse-drawn carriage, Pinckney's open coffin was displayed under the dome where he served the state for nearly 20 years....

To honor him, people had to file past a statue of former Vice President John C. Calhoun, who argued in the 1820s and 1830s that slavery was a "positive good," and that states should be able to decide not to follow federal laws they don't like.

The last person to lie under the dome was former Gov. Carroll Campbell in December 2005. Pinckney will be the first African-American given the honor at least since Reconstruction.

Prodded by Gov. Nikki Haley's call to move the flag to a museum, South Carolina's lawmakers overwhelmingly agreed to revisit an uneasy compromise that has held for 15 years, since mass protests succeeded in moving the flag from atop the dome to its current spot out front.

A growing number of politicians have since called for removing Civil War-era symbols, from state flags to license plates to statues and place names....

Even the Citadel, South Carolina influential military college, whose cadets fired the first shots of the Civil War, (this week) voted in favor of moving its Confederate Naval Jack flag from its prominent place inside its main chapel to a more "appropriate" campus location....

Conservative Republican lawmakers around the South were adding their voices to these sentiments Wednesday. U.S. Senator Roger Wicker became Mississippi's second top-tier Republican to call for changing the flag that state has used since Reconstruction. Wicker said it "should be put in a museum and replaced by one that is more unifying."

Lawmakers in Tennessee said a bust of Confederate general and Ku Klux Klan leader Nathan Bedford Forrest must go from their Senate. Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe was among several state leaders taking aim at vanity license plates with Confederate symbols.

Businesses also moved quickly: Wal-Mart, e-Bay, Amazon, Target and Sears were among those removing Confederate merchandise from stores and online sites, and at least three major flag makers said they will no longer manufacture the Confederate flag....
Dang.

Although I've heard of the 1963 16th Street Baptist Church bombing my entire life, I was too young to understand its impact on the nation at the time. This must have been what it was like.

No one ever said that racists are very smart.

It always cracks me up when I go back home and see some dumbass of Italian descent, whose ancestors probably came to the US in the 1920s, driving a pickup with confederate flag stickers.

I just don't think the heritage argument holds up in that scenario.

 Long before you joined and probably on BRN, Kernel Failure, our most vocal current defender of the slaver flag, told us that his parents (maybe grandparents) are Italian. I think you just stepped in it, opps.
