2016 Elections

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

So - Christie is officially in.
There are now 14 - count 'em 14 - Republican, ummm, "candidates" for President of the United States. How is it possible that none of them is choosing a path that might actually lead to a win? Why do they all gravitate to the lowest common denominator of the hard right wing? Who do they think the hard right wing will vote for if they strike a middle-right America stance? Hillary? I'm so sure. Why, out of all the 14, doesn't somebody say, "enough of this teapartying evangelical shit. I want to win all across the US. Vote for me or get Hillary. Otherwise eat shit and die." Reagan could still get elected. "No new taxes" or not, Bush the elder could get elected. Not one of the 14 wannabe ideologues has a chance. NTTAWWT, but I just wonder why.

So why are the nutz the "base"? And again, where are they going to go if you ignore them? They're not going to vote for the Dem candidate no matter what.

Seems like the hard right will show up during the primaries, they show as much disdain for RINO's as they do for progressives, that's why Mittens had to turn wingnutty in 2012, but couldn't recover for the general election (besides the 47%, not being likeable, associating with ordinary Americans etc.).

I don't think the TP even constitutes half the republican party, but they are definitely the loudest.

From what I've read Ted Cruz's real biological father may be even worse than Joseph McCarthy.

I don't know - I was just going on looks. "Worse than Joseph McCarthy" would have to be pretty bad if we're taking politics.

I don't think their goal is to get elected.... I'm betting they don't get poorer for trying though.

Ah, the pic, I assumed you just meant politics. You're right, the resemblance is striking.
The Six Craziest Quotes From Ted Cruz’s Father, Rafael Cruz

... His father, Rafael Cruz, is just as much of a troublemaker but may turn out to be more of a hindrance than a help in the senator’s presidential bid....

A Cruz spokesman told Mother Jones, “Pastor Cruz does not speak for the senator.” But after hearing the elder Cruz speak earlier this year, Glenn Beck said, “It’s easy to see that the fruit doesn’t fall far from the tree in the Cruz household.”
That's pretty bad to be so wingnutty that Ted Cruz has to distance himself.

Otoh, Glenn Beck may just be more honest and accurate than the Cruz spokesman.
... “We need to send Barack Obama back to Chicago. I’d like to send him back to Kenya, back to Indonesia.” He went on to say, “We have to unmask this man. This is a man that seeks to destroy all concept of God. And I will tell you what, this is classical Marxist philosophy. Karl Marx very clearly said Marxism requires that we destroy God because government must become God.”

... In a speech before the local Tea Party, Cruz likened the United States under President Obama to Cuba under Castro, warned that the Obamacare “death panels” are coming, and said the government, which he called a “wicked rule,” wants to confiscate “our fortunes.”

Cruz went on to lie about Obama’s record on abortion. “Do you realize,” he asked a room of conservatives, “the first bill President Obama signed into law was to legalize third trimester abortions?” Then, referring to Kermit Gosnell, the abortion provider convicted of murdering babies this year, Cruz said, Obama “probably doesn’t have any problem with what this butcher in Philadelphia is doing.”

...In his State of the Union address, Obama said that if Congress refused to act on climate change, he would “direct my Cabinet to come up with executive actions we can take, now and in the future, to reduce pollution, prepare our communities for the consequences of climate change, and speed the transition to more sustainable sources of energy.” These words, Cruz said, are “the most ominous words I’ve ever heard.” Over shouts of “Tyranny!” Cruz said, “Not much different than that old bearded friend that I left behind in Cuba, governing by decree, by executive order, just like a dictator, like Fidel Castro.”

... Rafael Cruz told Glenn Beck that the U.S. has its very own “ministry of misinformation” that governments in communist countries like Cuba employ to spread their messages. That propaganda machine, he said, is the liberal media. “They just tell us what they want us to hear. They are rewriting history…because they have an agenda. And unfortunately the agenda is an evil agenda. It’s an agenda for destroying what this country is all about,” he said....

“Socialism requires that government becomes your god. That’s why they have to destroy the concept of God. They have to destroy all loyalties except loyalty to the government. That’s what’s behind homosexual marriage. It’s really more about the destruction of the traditional family than about exalting homosexuality, because you need to destroy, also, loyalty to the family.”

... Because of Obama’s excessive regulation, Cruz says “the oil industry is stifled” and claims, “We are buying 40 percent of our oil from our enemies…Our enemies control the energy that we use or do not use.” And they have the power, he said, “to shut down the valves and bring us to our knees.” In truth, while the U.S. does rely on foreign sources for about 40 percent of our oil, about half of that amount comes from the Western Hemisphere, and the largest supplier is our ally, Canada, according to the Energy Information Administration.
He may have a point with that last one. Don't trust Canada ;)

Whatever he makes up. When did he ever have any real credentials for politics anyway? In fact, most of his personal abilities useful as a real estate mogul would be decidedly negatives in practically any political office. The people dumping events on his golf courses and hotels really are pretty much chump change in his overall world. I don't know what the actual ownership arrangement is on those properties, but I'm thinking it's not just all his, but even if they were all his, it wouldn't be a noticeable hit on his bottom line. However... the constant and continuing drip, drip of people dropping him should certainly have a cumulative effect. And I'm thinking there is probably major money in things like the Macy's deal, "The Apprentice" and the boob parades.

It's just a misunderstanding and should have been written as, "I'll win The Latino's vote."
"The Latino" is what he calls the pool guy whose name he can never remember.

Someone commented elsewhere that he thought Trump would drop
out before the deadline to release personal financial info, as it
would show he doesn't have as many assets as he brags about.
I believe the deadline is a couple of months away.

It think that is likely. It may not be whether he actually is worth 8 bill or whatever, but I can't see him undergoing the financial scrutiny required of a real candidate. At best, there's a lot of smoke, mirrors, loopholes, technicalities, and mumbo-jumbo in there somewhere.

It's a credit to the constant anti-Obama propaganda that any of the current Republican, ummm, "candidates" is even alive enough to see themselves in the mirror. The only reason anybody would vote for any of them is because they are determined to vote against the Democrat - any Democrat - at any cost. If Obama had not been defined (or defined himself) as a "black guy" he would have gotten the Bill Clinton treatment (derided by the loons) but regular people would recognize he did a good job (BC 68% approval at end of term). Obama has done a decent enough job with what he had to work with to win general approval of the mainstream. That he's only a little above 50% and anybody is seriously thinking of voting for any Republican candidate is mostly (maybe not entirely) because he's the black guy. The guy from Kenya. They guy who appeases the Muslims. The guy who wants to ruin then rule "Merica". The guy who wants to take all our guns and invade Texas. The crazies will shower their fear-mongering on Hillary, and anybody else who turns into a viable Dem candidate, but they'll never be able to make it stick like they can with the black guy.

Is there a deadline to release personal financial info, Bungalow Bill? Mitten did not reveal as much as past candidates had.
