The Food Thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Foodies have joined the "let's scare everybody" habit. I saw one article that was entitled something like, "5 foods that can kill you" and it turned out it wasn't blowfish or whatever, but was mostly regular food that in some weird context on a rare occasion had killed somebody. Sure a hamburger will kill you if you try to swallow it whole while laughing.

"Mrs O Really" and I eat pretty simply, but well.
We eat fish, chicken, occasionally but not often beef, sometimes but rarely pork. Often grilled. Never fried. Fresh veggies, fresh fruit, whole grain bread. Dairy in the form of yogurt, milk, and sometimes cheese. Practically nothing processed or packaged. No frozen dinners, no box mac 'n cheese. No chips, no donuts, no candy, rarely anything that could be considered dessert. Pizza only in NY or NJ. But it's always prepared well, presentation as good as JTA's chicken, and there's no sense of deprivation. It's just a long time habit of eating (mostly) clean.

Ditto. I don't keep any snacks in my house at all. If I'm overcome with the munchies I'm then forced to go on a munchie quest rather than raiding my cabinents and mindlessly eating, so this often prevents me from eating. Usually. I once came down with the munchies real hard, so I decided to flip a coin and let fate decide. Heads I'm making a gas station run, tails I'm dealing with it and not going. I flipped the coin and it landed on tails and i said fuck it I'm going anyway.

Glutenphobia is mentioned. Much of what I eat is organic and I'd guess that it's healthier on average, but my main reason for doing so is the front end effect on the environment of agricultural choices.
I went out with someone like that, I think that might have been a big red flag.

That's actually a good way to use a coin flip in decision-making. You don't have to commit to doing what the coin says, but you flip it, then evaluate how you feel about its choice. If you're disappointed, pick the other alternative. If you're happy, stick with the flip.

Ugh. Hippie ladies any day of the week man.

Better not miss your flight to Colorado this time, sounds like you could use the break.

I never got into the woo-woo aspect of hippiedom, either.

Some folks in activist circles overly concern themselves with personal sustainability and preventing burnout. My being old and an action medic, they often turn to me as a natural ally to promote trainings, etc. My response - For various reasons like children, aging parents, careers, personal health, financial stressors, becoming more conservative, disillusionment, etc., most people will stop being activists by the time they're 30, regardless. So, 'use 'em up and spit 'em out', there will always be more youth.

Tongue in cheek, sure, and I'm all for reasonable and high probability of success measures, but you should see the reactions I get from the woo-woo crowd. :D

If I forget this time then I never deserve to go anywhere again. I think my brain is being fried by fluorescent lights and gray walls. If you think about it's kind of messed up. I wake up in the morning, leave the box that I call home for a box that moves, drive this box to another giant box that holds about 400 other people. I sit in a smaller box and stare at another box all day to do my work. Then when it's all said and done X number of years from now I'm gonna end up in another box in the dirt. Repeat after me - I am free. Haha.

Speaking of hippies... I was supposed to go to this with a friend: http://www.3dlgathering.com/workshops.html

But I don't think it's really my thing so I'm bailing.
