Re: The homophobic thread :>
It's interesting to think how far adrift from "personal religious freedom" Davis has boldly stomped. Let's follow the steps.
She believes same-sex marriage, and apparently homosexuality in general is a sin. OK, that may get her some ridicule, but without doubt she has the right to believe that and, in her private life, to tell people she believes that, and no government will tell her she can't. She doesn't have to engage in homosexual activities. She doesn't have to marry a person of the same gender as she. She can pray they all go to Hell, or that they'll be "saved" and go to Heaven. She can refuse to speak to her gay son, if she had one.
But that's not enough. She requires practical compliance with her beliefs by the gay (and straight) couples she refuses to do her job for. She requires absolute compliance with her beliefs by the deputies, whom she forbid to issue licenses, no matter what their personal beliefs might be. She demands the law be changed to allow her to require others to comply with her beliefs. She demands the judge not to do his job (no matter his personal beliefs) to allow her to require others to comply with her beliefs.
I could go on, but what's the point? How can anybody - no matter their beliefs - not see that this is not a "religious freedom" issue and is simply a work performance issue. How can anybody not see that it's not a good idea to let government workers refuse to follow US and state law and impose Sharia Law - opps, I mean Christian Law - on the public and on their own fellow employees?

They came to escape persecution . . . So they could institute their own in the New World.
Europe was quite proper and proactive to hound the puritans out. It's high time we did the same.

Pilgrims (or Brownists), not Puritans.Boatrocker wrote:They came to escape persecution . . . So they could institute their own in the New World.

The Puritans wanted reform from within the state Church. The Brownist Pilgrims held similar Calvinist religious beliefs to the Puritans but wanted their congregations separate from the state church.
Davis's use of her government office to force a state religion goes against the religious freedom that the Pilgrims sought.

Nearly three in four Americans say that when a conflict arises between religious convictions and the need to treat everyone equally under the law, the law should prevail, according to new results from an ABC News/Washington Post poll out Tuesday.

Devil's advocate, somewhat - I'm fine with government officials and others taking principled stands in defiance of the law. However, one then resigns, accepts jail, firing, impeachment or rarely exile, and does not make stupid arguments denying the validity of the law or boo-hoo about being a victim.

Clerk Kim Davis switching parties to become a Republican
Leaving aside discussion of which party she belongs in, it's pretty cool that she's the GOP's problem now.

Kim Davis crossing over to the Republicans is like Moses crossing the Red Sea and Washington crossing the Delaware combined!

Re: The homophobic thread :>
Overall, though, it was a crappy session. From: ACLU of North Carolina <contact@acluofnc.org>
Date: Wed, September 30, 2015
The pressure you put on the North Carolina General Assembly helped defeat an extreme attack on our LGBT friends, neighbors, and relatives!
You may have heard that earlier this week, under cover of night, and less than 48 hours before the close of the lengthy legislative session, members of the General Assembly attempted — once again — to sanction discrimination against LGBT North Carolinians. A provision to strip local governments of their ability to pass local laws protecting their LGBT residents from discrimination, negotiated in secret by a group of appointed House and Senate members, was inserted into a completely unrelated bill, SB 279.
In the waning hours of the legislative session, the ACLU worked with you and our allies to educate members of the General Assembly about the devastating discriminatory consequences of such a law. A broad coalition that included civil rights groups, faith leaders, and local governments fought this attack on local protection, and with your help, today we can tell you that we won!
The discriminatory provision was removed from the bill just after midnight last night, before the final bill was passed and the legislature adjourned for the year!
With your support, we will continue to support these local efforts, and push for similar protections statewide. As always, thank you for standing with the ACLU-NC to defeat discrimination in all forms!
Sincerely,
Sarah Preston
Acting Executive Director
ACLU of North Carolina

Yeah, some 28 Republicans turned against their ummm, "leadership" to help dump it back to committee and then into the trash bin. Led by a guy from Greensboro (where there has been an anti-discrimination law for years) and joined by McGrady.

Indiana GOP’s House Leader resigns after texting sexually explicit video of himself cheating on wife to everyone on his “Contacts” list

To me marriage has been, is, and will always be the union between one woman and one man. I will protect the integrity of the institution of marriage. I believe that a marriage is a union of a man and a woman before their peers, government, and most importantly, God. In southeastern Indiana the family has always been the foundation of our strength of community. Our relationships with our wives, husbands, parents, children, siblings and other loved ones provides the glue that binds our common purpose. In these times of turmoil the rest of the country could learn something from our example. I will fight to make sure that traditional Hoosier and American values are protected and that our elected government works to maintain them. I will also work to make sure that we, in Southeastern Indiana, are an example to others, and that we lead our nation back to the core values that made our country great.

Yup. Canada is again destroying traditional marriage.
No word on whether that woman was also Canadian. But credit where credit is due: In a break from tradition for Republican homophobes, at least he was cheating with a woman. It's not McMillin's first brush with ethics while in public office. Ten years ago, a domestic violence victim said they had a sexual relationship while he was handling her case as an assistant prosecutor in Montgomery County, Ohio.
[...]
In the Ohio incident in 2005, McMillin resigned his position as a prosecutor just weeks after he withdrew from the domestic violence case involving the woman he had a relationship with. The woman sued him for legal malpractice the following year, but the lawsuit was later withdrawn.
The woman said in a sworn affidavit that she and McMillin had texted each other photographs of themselves that were "sexual in nature."

Dang, even sexting thieves are polite in Canada. In the text, McMillin said his cellphone had been stolen in Canada and that he had gotten it back a day later.
