Yeah, I know it's Tennesses, but still. People running the school are surely younger than I am, and I lived happily through all the flap over long hair, dirty jeans, scruffy beards, peace-sign t-shirts, yada. You'd think they would have learned, as I did, that nit-picking over clothes isn't that important to education. But nooooo! Where have these people spent the last 30 years?

I hate websites that do this. Even if I have visited Newsweek, and I don't think I have, I've certainly not read five articles. I'm amazed that blueridgenow has even bothered keeping their website going anymore with that shenanigans. You’ve hit your limit of 5 free articles this month.

This article first appeared on RobertReich.org.
The other night, I phoned a former Republican member of Congress with whom I’d worked in the 1990s on various pieces of legislation. I consider him a friend.
I wanted his take on the Republican candidates because I felt I needed a reality check. Was I becoming excessively crotchety and partisan, or are these people really as weird as they seem? We got right into it.
Me: “So what do really you think of these candidates?”
Him: “You want my unvarnished opinion?”
Me: "Please. That’s why I called.”
Him: “They’re all nuts.”
Me: “Seriously. What do you really think of them?”
Him: “I just told you. They’re bonkers. Bizarre. They’re like a Star Wars bar room.”
Me: “How did it happen? How did your party manage to come up with this collection?”
Him: “We didn’t. They came up with themselves. There’s no party anymore. It’s chaos. Anybody can just decide they want to be the Republican nominee and make a run for it. Carson? Trump? They’re in the lead, and they’re both out of their fucking minds.”
Me: “That’s not reassuring.”
Him: “It’s a disaster. I’m telling you, if either of them is elected, this country is going to hell. The rest of them aren’t much better. I mean, Carly Fiorina? Really? Rubio? Please. Ted Cruz? Oh my God. And the people we thought had it sewn up, who are halfway sane—Bush and Christie—they’re sounding almost as batty as the rest.”
Me: “Who’s to blame for this mess?”
Him: “Roger Ailes, David and Charles Koch, Rupert Murdoch, Rush Limbaugh. I could go on. They’ve poisoned the American mind and destroyed the Republican Party.
Me: "Nice talking with you.”
Him: “Sleep well.”

I've been told that removing cookies & reopening the browser deals with this, but I've had some trouble making that work and haven't spent much time figuring out if I'm doing something wrong. Tor Browser does the job, though.bannination wrote:I hate websites that do this. Even if I have visited Newsweek, and I don't think I have, I've certainly not read five articles. Clearing your cookies works with many sites.
One of my complaints with Microsoft's new Edge browser is that you have to manually clear cookies. With IE, I simply set it to clear cookies any time I closed the browser. This was for simple privacy; resetting news site counters was merely a side-effect.

All heart is on the left, but the right does have the appendix - a nearly useless organ that causes major disruption every now and then and must be removed.

They're young, they'll learn that it rarely pays for activists to pick a fight with the media or to appear to oppose the 1st Amendment. That said, the temporary exclusion of one student photographer’s access hardly compares with the exclusion from equal access to so many things that blacks face everyday and it's dubious whether it merits NYT outrage. There's a more important story here.
I don't know enough about the University of Missouri situation or the administration's response to opine on the protest goals, but I think the result has been brilliant mass organizing. Whether on the football team or outside of it, whoever thought of getting the players to go on strike leading to gaining the coach's support and the president of the university system and the chancellor of the flagship campus in Columbia stepping down so quickly is a genius.
College Athletes’ Potential Realized in Missouri Resignations
Trivia: The 1950 in #ConcernedStudent1950 refers to the year the first black was allowed to enroll at the University of Missouri.

Not Carson & Cruz, though. Both are reportedly very smart, sometimes that inhibits learning.

Ok in all fairness though, that video isn't anywhere near as cringeworthy as this one:
Background: Yale sends out an email telling students to try to avoid insensitive Halloween costumes. A professor responds with the following:
Bravo.“Free speech and the ability to tolerate offence are the hallmarks of a free and open society,” she wrote as she remembered a conversation with her husband. “Nicholas says, if you don’t like a costume someone is wearing, look away, or tell them you are offended. Talk to each other.”

Trigger warning!
Maybe this is just confirmation bias on my part, but have students really become this thin-skinned towards anything they find offensive? I thought university was supposed to be where you could freely discuss controversial (and sometimes offensive) ideas?
If it's offensive and hurts my feelings - BAN IT!
I don't know, that's just some 1984 level stuff right there. Were students as thin skinned back when you guys went to school? I don't remember it being that way when I was in college, although I think that's about the time this SJW-don't-offend-me gimme-a-trigger-warning business was just starting to gain traction.

I'm pretty sure we weren't. "Animal House" may be an exaggeration for comedy, but not that far off from some places. There were some things we got offended by, but on the other hand, being offensive was sometimes intentional.JTA wrote:. Were students as thin skinned back when you guys went to school? .

They're young activists, perhaps for the first time in their lives given that it's Missouri. They'll learn.
I heckled David Duke when he came to our campus.
I'm 100% for free speech, but I also don't mind strong reactions to speech at the expense of the oppressed or marginalized. We've looked away for too long.

Re: Wingnutties out of control!
I don't agree with David Duke, but I don't know how I feel about heckling either. I watched another video of a bunch of ultra-feminists heckling some speaker that was talking about men's issues to the point where the event had to be shut down. To me that's cowardice. If you can't debate your ideas and resort to heckling you automatically lose a lot of credibility. If you heckle someone just because you find them and their ideas offensive you have no ground to stand on. I like controversial ideas. I like hearing offensive ideas. I don't think offensive ideas should ever be banned.Vrede too wrote:They're young activists, perhaps for the first time in their lives given that it's Missouri. They'll learn.

But ok, I'll concede this isn't a monolithic rule, because sometimes the opposing side is obviously just trying to get a rise and start trouble (as we've discussed here before, then again who decides? Slippery slope, maybe), but at the time time heckling does nothing to prove ones point in most settings in my opinion. Not to me, anyway.
You guys could call me a dumbass and ban me for asking questions like they do on other forums, but you don't and instead always provide good counterpoints making me reconsider. Hence why heckling is bad.

Re: Wingnutties out of control!
I don't see that protection of one's First Amendment rights to free speech is my responsibility or that of fellow garden variety citizens. The protection of free speech is the government's job, and relates to their not taking action against somebody for what they say. The rest of us, however, can express our society displeasure at the speaker and give the message, "yes David Duke, you have the First Amendment right to express your ignorance and hate, but you're not going to do it here, to us, or use our home (campus, city, whatever) as your podium."
