The Global Warming thread.

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

This claim gets made all the time, backed up by graphs and carefully selected data. You've posted some of those claims here before.

And yet they all get quickly disproven. Facts were taken out of context. A result from one measurement gets highlighted while 99 others that disagree are ignored. The explanation for adjusted data are ignored. (Weather stations in a city center vs the countryside, different units of measure being used, different instruments used over time, etc.) But in the end it's shown that NASA, NOAA and many other organizations in other countries actually monitoring climate data were right all along. The climate models that the climate-deniers said were wrong, are shown to be right. ALWAYS. EVERY TIME.

Which is why theses claims are made ALL THE TIME. They get repeated by a hundred different blogs, and posted to forums like this one by people too goddamned stupid to notice that their last umpteen such posts were shown to be frauds. A few days later when the fraud is countered with facts, it's old news and the next such fraud is already making the rounds.

Heck, I'm still seeing people claiming that the "ClimateGate" emails PROVED that real climate scientists were making up data. When in reality no such thing happened. (The best the deniers could do is take discussion of trimming a document so that it can fit on one printed page out of context, and misrepresent it as "altering the data.) Because all the saw, all they wanted to see, was the denier claims and not the debunking that came later.

So Doc, I've long suspected that you enjoy being a pretend climate denier just for sport. Being the obviously intelligent man of science you are, it seems unlikely you'd really be buying the deniers, ummmm, "theory" without checking other and probably more reliable sources. But then comes Dr. Ben, famed surgeon and believer in granary pyramids and fellow denier. Makes me wonder just what are they teaching at Johns Hopkins and M.D. Anderson. Is it possible for a person, say, Dr. Ben, to be so wrapped up in his medicine that he is totally unaware of the rest of the world around him? Is it possible that he thinks scientific methods and research apply only to medicine and not to anything else? How would one explain a person who is not a climate scientist believing others who are not climate scientists and arbitrarily disputing those who are?

Only according to Steven Goddard (pseudonym Tony Heller), a blogger with a BS in geology and a Master's degree in electrical engineering.

He's also a    birfer    .

Wneglia, in your long and successful medical career did you ever once take medical advice from a guy with a BS in geology and a Master's degree in electrical engineering? And, do you really believe that the relevant scientists at NOAA, NASA, the Japanese Meteorological Agency, University of California at Berkeley and University of Alabama at Huntsville are engaged in some grand international conspiracy or are you just playing straight man, as O Really suggests, in order to give us the opportunity to debunk in detail?

On a global warming side topic, I have declared winter to be officially over, since the O Really winter residence is rolling toward south Florida. O Really, Lady O Really, and Rotti O Really are happily warming our own little globe in Savannah tonight, with an expected low around 60. The remainder of Christmas shopping will be done in shorts and tee shirts.

Making the rounds internationally this morning...

North Carolina town rejects solar because it'll suck up sunlight and kill the plants
Jane Mann said she is a local native and is concerned about the plants that make the community beautiful.

She is a retired Northampton science teacher and is concerned that photosynthesis, which depends upon sunlight, would not happen and would keep the plants from growing. She said she has observed areas near solar panels where the plants are brown and dead because they did not get enough sunlight.

She also questioned the high number of cancer deaths in the area, saying no one could tell her that solar panels didn’t cause cancer.

[...]

Bobby Mann said he watched communities dry up when I-95 came along and warned that would happen to Woodland because of the solar farms.

“You’re killing your town,” he said. “All the young people are going to move out.”

He said the solar farms would suck up all the energy from the sun and businesses would not come to Woodland.

Pretty sure the young people aren't moving away from Woodland because of the solar farms. I'm pretty sure they are moving away from that town because the folk who inhabit it are missing a few chromosomes.

Coopersale • 4 days ago

Is this article satire? Those comments from the public comment portion of the meeting aren't REAL, are they?

They can't possibly be real. This has to be satire.

I don't know what's more idiotic, that people actually SAID such ridiculous things or that the town council actually LISTENED to those people.

Wow.

Jesus wept.
Mason Coopersale • 4 days ago

As somebody with a good amount of experience sitting in on city council meetings where citizens frequently attend to give their two cents worth, I'm sad to say that these are all easily genuine comments, and aren't even close to the craziest things I've heard.

"He said the solar farms would suck up all the energy from the sun and businesses would not come to Woodland."

Um...yeah, I got nothin'.
hereinWA • 13 hours ago

C'mon, cain't we git sum reecharibble battrees fer the sun?
David Rice • 3 days ago

It kind of sounds like the reason the town is dying is because of the incestuous inbreeding has lowered IQ test scores to single digits.
And so on. :D

Wouldn't have to take a break from Lady O Really. Seattle girls have their own yaks. But there definitely will be Everglades trips, as well as Rainbow and Silver rivers.

I drove that once; interesting, but not all that pretty. Kayaking, I think, would be interesting!

Who knows? maybe Vrede too and I can come to terms one day and take the challenge! The first challenge being the 'gators!

41 can be pretty miserable, due to high traffic, but if anybody wanted to take in the west side of Florida, I'd start almost to Pensacola, and follow 98 along the shore. Stop off at Steinhatchee and Cedar Key. Stay on 98 until you get to 19, and follow that along past the wildlife preserves and stop off at Wikki Watchee, where mermaids still swim and have been there since before there were mice in Orlando. Take 19 on down to Tarpon Springs and enjoy some authentic Greek food and culture. Take 19A on down to Clearwater Beach, one of the best/prettiest beaches anywhere. You can take Gulf Blvd (699) along the shore through little beach towns all the way to St. Pete. Slow going, but pretty. After that, you'll have to make choices on traffic vs. view. There are no really easy ways to get south from St. Pete. Getting out to places like Longboat Key, Siesta Key, and further down at Sanibel or Captiva often have long lines at the bridges. Somewhere between Sarasota and Ft. Meyers, depending on your patience, get on 41 l(Tamiami Trail) and ride it to the Glades. Hope you've got a long vacay time for it, though. But if you're in a hurry, take I-75 and get off from time to time to visit places.
