2016 Elections

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Fox News wins. Democrats will keep the White House in 2016, and Fox and the others monetizing impotent right-wing rage will keep raking in money.

But eventually the Republicans will win the White House with a reasonably sane Romney-like leader. Which is when the REAL horrifying long-term consequences of 2012 and 2016 appear for us folks outside the US: "Ambassador Trump", "Ambassador Palin", "Ambassador Carson"...

Republicans are fiscally conservative, it's cheaper than sending you Ambassador Amy Poehler or Ambassador Chris Rock.

How about we send them Ambassador Justin Bieber?

I was sticking with the comedy theme, I haven't heard how syrupy, Canadian and awful Trump, Palin and Carson's singing is.

Criminal record with violence. We wouldn't allow him into the country.

So Mexico could refuse to accept the 11 million "rapists, beggars and thieves" Trump wants to round up and "send back"?

His O-1 visa for temporary US resident status could be revoked, you would have to.

However, if we want to split hairs, he would have to be a US citizen before he would be made Ambassador. Then, you could reject him.

If America can change the rules to let Bieber stay in the America after multiple convictions, then Canada can change the rules to keep him out. :D

In any case Trump & Friends (tm) also want to send back the American-born children of illegal immigrants. Mexico could declare them non-Mexican and refuse to take them.

Speaking of revocation: While you can renounce your Canadian citizenship (after showing that you have citizenship in another country), Canada can, er, revoke the renunciation if anything on it was shown to be fraudulent.

Should Trump and Carson give way to Ted Cruz as the sane, adult, credible candidate , I imagine folks will be looking at his forms. It would be a damn shame if Canada's new Liberal government declared him to still be a Canadian citizen just before the US election.

It doesn't help that there's also a so-far unsubstantiated claim that while Cruz's mother met the requirements for her child to be *eligible* for US citizenship despite being born in Canada, it could be challenged on the basis she never applied to the American embassy to get his Consulate Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA) or FS-240 or DS-1350 which would document him as an American citizen.

More likely - and this will likely happen regardless - Canada might mirror America's FACTA banking laws that the US is imposing on Canada. Cruz would always be a "Canadian Person" under those laws. Just like Canadians born in Canada to Americans or married to Americans - even having never been to the US or having US citizenship - are now suddenly "US persons" and required to hand over their banking and tax information.

I get how selfless Canadians are but that they would risk getting him back for the good of the world stretches credulity.

Ulterior motive. It's what you get in return.

When the Conservatives came to power a decade ago, for some reason they made socialist Gary Doer the ambassador to the US. Now with Doer retiring and the Liberals taking office, one can only expect Trudeau to return the favor. With the Conservative Party choosing a new leader and watching Trump's popularity in the US, they'll be only too happy to have "Ambassador Rob Ford" out of the country.

I would trade citizen Ted Cruz for "Ambassador Rob Ford" any day. You're ruining my impression of Canadians being smart.

Will Ferrell as George W. Bush on SNL about “poor Jeb”: “You’ve got to admit it's a pretty good plot twist that I turned out to be the smart one.” He also dissed the "Jeb!" exclamation point: "Calling it BROCCOLI! doesn't make it taste any better."
