Shit Republicans Say

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Congress did a study in the 60s showing that if productivity continued as it had been doing, that we could be able to have a 30 (possibly 20) hour work week
Actual productivity shattered expectations
And then there was the clueless one
Reagan just palin and simple suckered in every sense of the word
Trump: “We had the safest border in the history of our country - or at least recorded history. I guess maybe a thousand years ago it was even better.”

It's been a fairly unbroken continuum for about 35 years. Credit Reagan for starting it or representing the start, but there's plenty of fault on the Dems' hands.

Politicians one and all

but to the repugs, the creation of a ruling class is considered an accomplishment

Like it or not, it's true.

One other point where the universe stubbornly refuses to bow to your spoon-fed Republican worldview:

Carly Fiorina: The United States has a "record number of abortions year after year after year."

Politifact: Image

Trending down, not up, since early 1980s

A slow but steady drop, year after year, for 35 years. One can only wonder how much faster the drop would be if the religious right hadn't opposed birth control every step of the way. (Or for that matter, what it would do to homicide, mortality, STD and youth pregnancy, which are also worse in the Bible belt than elsewhere.)
Seth Milner wrote:You know nothing of my "sins"; since you're a rabid atheist, tell us more of what you know about "sin".
If you want to draw a correlation between sins and atheism, the US prison population sums it up best:

The non-religious make up about 15% of the US population, 33% for the more prison-prone 18–29-year-old demographic. Meanwhile, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, only 0.209% of the prison population are atheist.

In "The New Criminology", Max D. Schlapp and Edward E. Smith say that two generations of statisticians found that the ratio of convicts without religious training is about 1/10 of 1%. W. T. Root, professor of psychology at the Univ. of Pittsburgh, examined 1,916 prisoners and said "Indifference to religion, due to thought, strengthens character," adding that Unitarians, Agnostics, Atheists and Free-Thinkers are absent from penitentiariers or nearly so.

although politicians like to give their toughness the credit, it could be as simple as lead.

the removal of lead from gasoline and paint precedes by about 10 - 15 years a huge downturn in violent intercity crime.

just ask the Romans, they loved some lead

Seth Milner ran away, as usual. Maybe occult lead exposure as a child explains why he always does that.

... it's not just New York that has seen a big drop in crime. In city after city, violent crime peaked in the early '90s and then began a steady and spectacular decline. Washington, DC, didn't have either Giuliani or Bratton, but its violent crime rate has dropped 58 percent since its peak. Dallas' has fallen 70 percent. Newark: 74 percent. Los Angeles: 78 percent.

... Crime rates rose dramatically in the '60s through the '80s, and then began dropping steadily starting in the early '90s.

... Why has the lead/crime connection been almost completely ignored in the criminology community?

... Political conservatives (like Seth Milner) want to blame the social upheaval of the '60s for the rise in crime that followed. Police unions have reasons for crediting its decline to an increase in the number of cops. Prison guards like the idea that increased incarceration is the answer. Drug warriors want the story to be about drug policy. If the actual answer turns out to be lead poisoning, they all lose a big pillar of support for their pet issue....

Image

...
There is no antidote or cure for lead poisoning. We can expect a spike in dysfunction above the expected for thousands of Flint, MI kids as they grow up.

amazing it took so long to get it reduced in new products. I remember all the righties saying that we could never have really white paint again unless they used lead

but everyone have been calling painters "drunks" for hundreds of years
and who would ever want to be "crazy as a glazier"

I've always wondered about those lead tubes we kept our toothpaste in

do you suppose they hoarded lead paint too

One source:
DENTAL TRIVIA

Lead in toothpaste: Toothpaste was first placed in collapsible tubes in the 1850's, and they were made of lead. This practice, though known to be potentially poisonous, continued though the 1950's. During WWII, containers were placed on the streets for collection of toothpaste tubes so the lead could be removed for making bullets.
I don't know about the harm from it. The lead would have to leech into the toothpaste and almost all toothpaste is spit out rather than ingested.

Why not? In every case in the video, the kid is learning the parents' bad habits. It's the previous generation that's the problem.

And yet, for crime, teenage pregnancy, divorce, racism, sexism, pollution etc., things are nevertheless slowly getting better over the decades.

 It even says, "Children see, Children do," at the end. It's not like tech distractions, smoking, littering, road rage, racism, anger, animal abuse, child abuse and domestic abuse are new inventions. Seth Milner fails logic and comprehension, again.

Aside: What was the puking women about - drunk, morning sickness, bulemia?
Way aside: If you can't carry a soda can it's environmentally and economically better to drop it in the street than to put it in a trash can. That way, someone might recycle it.

Back to our discussion of crime rates after Seth Milner foolishly scoffed at rstrong's accurate post about the drop in crime since the early 1990s. billy.pilgrim mentioned the removal of lead from gasoline and I cited the aging population. I just heard an NPR program on the topic, it was stated that correlations have been found but there isn't proof as to the causes. Other things mentioned were:

Increased incarceration - this was hotly disputed by another panel member who stated that prison "school" turns nonviolent offenders into hardened criminals.

The drop in popularity of crack cocaine after many saw how it ravages individuals and communities. I worked in the Oakland, CA Trauma Center ER during the height of the crack turf battles. When I left we were on pace for a record number of annual murders.

The legalization of abortion 2 decades earlier meaning that fewer people of prime criminal age that had been born into dysfunctional (for whatever reason) homes. Interesting, that never occurred to me.

That was the point of my original post, Vrede too. You fail Comprehension 101.

Aside: What was the puking women about - drunk, morning sickness, bulemia? (sp)
I think it was meant to portray alcohol or drug abuse. I seriously doubt it was bulimia; do you? You fail Diagnosis 101. (and spelling)

Way aside: If you can't carry a soda can it's environmentally and economically better to drop it in the street than to put it in a trash can.

Got it. Throw it down; let someone else pick it up.

What would you guess is the age of the "previous generation"? That "previous generation" is far from being of the same generation of any of us here.
Having many of the similar distractions that Vrede too mentioned, they were no better off than today's generation of children, therefore many of that "previous generation" were left on their own.
