The Romans didn't give care if you were white, black, or brown, they'd still make you a slave.http://abc7chicago.com/news/parents-out ... n/1223540/
Parents accuse high school Latin club of racism after depicting slavery in ancient Rome in a skit
The apparent mock slave auction took place during the Illinois Junior Classical Convention at The Westin in Itasca this weekend.
The Kenwood parents call it an open display of racism and are deeply offended.
The Barrington school district and the American/National Junior/Illinois Junior Classical League have apologized.... Parents of students at Kenwood Academy on the South Side said they watched an act of racism this past weekend during an event meant to bring students from Chicago and the suburbs together.
They said students from suburban Barrington High School held a mock slave auction in an attempt to show school spirit.
Video of the skit shows a chain around the neck of one student. The Kenwood parents sitting in the audience said they couldn't believe what they saw.

Parents outraged by apparent mock slave auction held by Barrington HS students
And there's no mention of ancient Rome in the article.

This would have been better.O Really wrote:Looks to me like it really was a Roman sort of thing, not from pre-Civil War US. Would've been fun to see the reaction if the class had re-created tossing some Christians to the lions.

LOL!!! Their motto is, "Leave some racists behind."... Later, some of the Klansmen flee the scene in the vehicle they arrived in — abandoning some of their compatriots in the process....
Goddamnit Vrede why can't you just let me be outraged about something without throwing a wrench in it with your reason and logic. Is that too much to ask?Vrede too wrote:How about an orgy?

More seriously, I'm undecided because the reporting is incomplete. Was there an attempt to set the context? Was the "school spirit" section the appropriate convention venue? Was it accurate to Roman slavery or more akin to ours? Why was slavery picked out of all the Roman things, like orgies or Christian mauling, that could be reenacted? Was consideration given to a white suburban school - black urban school dynamic? What do the adviser and student actors say? How did it win if some were offended and who selected the winner? Why the immediate apologies if it was innocuous?
And, what's up with JTA's first link changing so radically in the 40 minutes or less between when he quoted it and when I clicked on it?
Aside: I just learned on PBS that there is no evidence that Christians were ever killed at the Colosseum in Rome, though it did happen elsewhere. Evidently, showing their well known bravery in the face of certain death to Rome's citizens would have been politically unwise.
Is this therefore a win for both of us?Vrede too wrote:Seems like you're outraged about my reason and logic.
You're welcome.

Or, the state of public opinion in America in 2016, some of it leaders and media reporting on them? The New York Times' first (November 21, 1922) article about Hitler's rise is absolutely stunning
...Now, Brown's sources in all likelihood did tell him that Hitler's anti-Semitism was for show. That was a popular opinion during Nazism's early days. But that speaks to how unprepared polite German society was for a movement as sincerely, radically violent as Hitler's to take power. He is credibly credited with being actuated by lofty, unselfish patriotism. He probably does not know himself just what he wants to accomplish. The keynote of his propaganda in speaking and writing is violent anti-Semitism. His followers are nicknamed the "Hakenkreuzler." So violent are Hitler's fulminations against the Jews that a number of prominent Jewish citizens are reported to have sought safe asylums in the Bavarian highlands, easily reached by fast motor cars, whence they could hurry their women and children when forewarned of an anti-Semitic St. Bartholomew's night.
But several reliable, well-informed sources confirmed the idea that Hitler's anti-Semitism was not so genuine or violent as it sounded, and that he was merely using anti-Semitic propaganda as a bait to catch masses of followers and keep them aroused, enthusiastic, and in line for the time when his organization is perfected and sufficiently powerful to be employed effectively for political purposes.
A sophisticated politician credited Hitler with peculiar political cleverness for laying emphasis and over-emphasis on anti-Semitism, saying: "You can't expect the masses to understand or appreciate your finer real aims. You must feed the masses with cruder morsels and ideas like anti-Semitism. It would be politically all wrong to tell them the truth about where you really are leading them."
One other thing: if "violent anti-Semitism" was such a winning issue for Hitler, what does that tell us about the state of public opinion in Bavaria in 1922?
Nazis are often referred to as "brownshirts." I'm starting to see people referring to Trump supporters as "clownshirts."Vrede too wrote:Or, the state of public opinion in America in 2016, some of it leaders and media reporting on them?

We coined the term, "Nuclear Retreat" here at Beyond Nuclear to counter the nuclear industry's preposterous "nuclear renaissance" propaganda campaign. You've probably seen "Nuclear Retreat" picked up elsewhere and no wonder - the alleged nuclear revival so far looks more like a lot of running away. On this page we will keep tabs on every latest nuclear retreat as more and more proposed new nuclear programs are canceled.
