Not that much terror, at least not compared to that wrought by the current crop. W was governor of Texas (one of the weakest governor jobs in the country), but he'd been a pretty decent governor - pretty much a right-centrist. Not much to predict he'd turn out like he did, except maybe he'd always been susceptible to influence by right-wing idiots and nobody caught him.JTA wrote:Goddamn you guys. I was a mere high school freshman when W. was running, but was the terror as bad as the possibility of a Donny T. coronation? I mean, at least W. was a governor, right?

He never visited the Johnson Space Center while he was governor of Texas. He could have had the ultimate guided tour with ultimate access to everything, and he never visited.O Really wrote:Not much to predict he'd turn out like he did,
I don't like to swear, but it's hard not to see the words "WHAT A FUCKING IDIOT" coming over the mental horizon. It's hard not to see those who vetted him in 2000 presenting us with Sarah Palin in 2008.

Re: Trump
I was not a fan of Bill Clinton by 1995, was not enthusiastic about TVA Gore, and we knew that Shrub was a dunce but we didn't know that he would muck up 2 wars and crash the economy. Drumpf and Cruz are objectively worse, but they'd have to really work at it to be that bad in reality. I'm more depressed by what a Drumpf or Cruz win would be saying about the American people.JTA wrote:Goddamn you guys. There's a real possibility Donald Trump is gonna be our next president.

Re: Trump
If Hillary and Donald go head to head in the election, it could be another very close race. Which brings us to a possible outcome of this election:Vrede too wrote:I'll bite, what?rstrong wrote:There's a far worse outcome than any of them too, or Hillary, that Americans could wake up to on November 9th.
There could be a repeat of the 2000 presidential election results - Bush v. Gore decided by weeks of recounts and court battles.
That was already a circus, but imagine the circus with Hillary v. Trump.
Especially when the Supreme Court battle happens in the current environment, with Judge Scalia's death and the fight to replace him. And a Tea Party that didn't exist in 2000.

Re: Trump
Except that in 2000 it was a couple months. That was before the Republican Party and Fox News bred the Tea Party, the birthers and much of the current Republican blogosphere.Vrede too wrote:A couple of months of chaos is nothing compared to four or eight years of catastrophe.
If a Democratic President in 2000 released his birth certificate - authenticated by Vital Statistics - the birther issue would probably have ended except for the rantings of a few nutjobs. But since as Obama released his in 2008, the Birther Score Card is at 226 court actions, plus 120+ appeals, plus 35+ Supreme Court rulings. (As of last August. Birther wins: 0)
Trump is a guy who dragged reporter Tim O’Brien through years of litigation over a relatively favorable Trump biography that assigned a lower valuation to his net worth than he thought it should have. Who sued an architecture critic for writing that a planned Trump skyscraper in lower Manhattan would be “one of the silliest things” that could be built in the city. Who sues people for (correctly) predicting that one of his projects wouldn't be a financial success. Who sued comedian Bill Maher over a joke.
Gore could have kept fighting - we now know that a state-wide recount would have made him the victor. But knew when to quit for the good of the country. Trump? Not a chance. I doubt that Hillary would quit either. A Hillary v. Trump repeat of Bush v. Gore would go on for the entire four years in one form or another.
Nor would Congress act to stop it. The Republican flat-out refusal to negotiate legislation - with Republicans who act like adults and do their jobs tarred and feathered as RINOs and traitors and replaced with Tea Party candidates - didn't exist in 2000. It does now.
