What common misconceptions would you like people to know-

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

That's Danish. In Dutch:
English-Dutch Dictionary: vrede

vrede {de}
peace
No wonder Europe's been at war for thousands of years. Say "peace" to some guy with a pastry and you'll get it shoved in your face.
Yeah, I realized I mixed up Dutch-Danish shortly after I posted ... my apologies ... Image

Why was it called a "wake"? (try to figure it out before you Google it)

Are zombies "alive" and do they have a heartbeat? If so, why do you have to shoot them in the head?
Either no body knew the answer to my question, or no one cared to bother to answer it; but since you all sort of touched on it with your various replies to each other, I'll answer it.

If what I've long been told is true, (see below) people used to sit up with the dead because there weren't modern diagnostics back then to accurately verify death, nor was embalming a popular way of sending off one's remains. There have been cases of people lying in a coffin who suddenly revived, (came awake, woke, woken, whatever) and so somebody was left to sit in the event the 'deceased' needed assistance.

This is still practiced in some areas, but is no longer common.

"While the modern usage of the verb "wake" is "become or stay alert" meaning, a "wake" for the dead harks back to the antiquated "watch" or "guard" sense. This is contrary to the urban legend that people at a wake are waiting in case the deceased should "wake up."
Check your PMs, get back to us with the quote and time stamp. I didn't want to be a spoiler if I was correct.
In England (likely elsewhere too) a grave yard was relocated. When some were dis-intered it was obvious they were buried before death. After that congregation burned each with a string attached to a bell. For three days and nights someone sat by the bell with a spade. Likely more myth but that is the story.

It is true old English churches had cavities built into their foundations so those that passed during the winter could be kept until the ground was no longer frozen.

I wonder if the homeless sleep there now?

NO NAME CALLING, stay on topic, post interesting stuff.

Mine:

The size of the Universe; most people are told that it's 13.7 billion light years across, but that's not true. While that is the *age* of the universe the *size* of the *observable* universe is about 47 billion light years across. The total size of the universe is thought to be about 10 to the 23rd power larger than that.

One more: Bulls are not enraged by the color red. It's the threatening attitude and naturally self defense.

I think it's funny that most people will say "hot water heater" instead of just "water heater." After all, hot water doesn't have to be heated.

I have a problem with the term "near miss" -- a true 'near miss' would be a 'hit'.

Same deal.
The cheap stuff works as well as the 100 dollar cables the retailers attempt to push on you.
Yea.. like Mike said... however with Analog Video or HDMI cables the length of run should be considered.. I have heard of cheap long cables exhibiting poor performance.. that said.. I paid $12 for a 25' HDMI cable to connect a LCDTV in the kitchen to our receiver.. it works great..

partsexpress.com seems to have excellent price/performance interconnects.. . Amazon too if you trust their product reviews..

Why, when I get off an airplane, do I "deplane"? When I get out of my car, I don't de-car. If I take a city bus, I don't de-bus, I don't de-boat.... (thanks to George Carlin, as well as the "hot water heater" example)

For HDMI cables with short runs - like the $2 cables I bought at the dollar store - there's no difference. For longer runs you want to go with something more expensive - like the $35 24-foot cables I got at Home Depot. It's a digital signal. If you can see it, you're seeing it at full quality.

At the kiosks where showing the difference between Monster's and other cables, they're comparing a digital signal on an HDMI cable with an analog signal on a Composite Video cable.

Monster Cable Products is a notorious copyright litigation company, attacking anyone else who uses the word Monster:

Snow Monsters (a kid's skiing group)
MonsterVintage, small used clothing store
Monsters, Inc., an animated feature film
Monster Garage, a television series
Monsters of the Midway, a nickname of the Chicago Bears football team
Fenway Park's Monster seats
Monster Energy, energy drinks
Monster.com employment website
Monster Mini Golf
Monster Balls Paintballs manufactured by JT Sports
Monster Transmission

On behalf of the Floridians, former Floridians, New Yorkers, and Washingtonians, what's a "blinker?"

Most of the people you see driving in Florida aren't from Florida -- they just moved to Florida.

A bunch of them came from New York.

The green arrow on the light in front of you means go and not sit there waving the car across from you with the red light to go in front of you.
Folks do this all the time on Howard Gap and 64 east by Ingles, the arrow is nearly useless.

That Megapixels beyond a certain point have NOTHING to do with picture quality. Picture quality comes from lenses and sensors in the camera. Megapixels ONLY show how large a picture can be blown up and retain its original resolution.

Megapixel chart (x and y axis show size in inches an image can be blown up to, for example, an 8 MP picture can be blown up to about 8' x 11' and lose none of its resolution):

That's something located down under the engine that is difficult to reach in order to check the level of the blinking fluid.

That buying a cell phone based on the network (3G, 4G, whatever), is generally a waste unless you live in a big metropolitan area. All 4G phones revert to 3G when the coverage is not 4G in your area.

The Québécois usually stay more up in my end of the state and play golf all winter. Then they drive home. And use their blinkers appropriately.

Citrus County. Winter home of half of Quebec. Probably some Marion County, over there with Mike.
