Independence Day (or something like that)

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Sometimes America can seem like an unhinged Ferris wheel rolling toward the sea, still lit up, music still playing, awesome to behold.

And sometimes, like this, it's just simply awesome.
Thank you rstrong you are a spectacular spectator! And you made me proud, it's been a while.

Hope those fires didn't affect you.

Would that be anything like a snowball rolling downhill towards hell? Would be more of a proper fit.

You're welcome!

All's well here. The fires in Alberta are thousands of miles away, and the fires in the Whiteshell area were a couple hours east and downwind.

Nah. America is clearly rolling *away* from hell. Crime rates have been dropping for decades. Civil rights are being recognized and institutionalized. The act of one lone deranged gunman aside (killing of policed officers and assaults on them have been steadily dropping for 35 years), even last week’s events are a good sign – people are standing up against remaining discrimination and demanding that it stop. There have been major improvements in environmental standards and much more. Divorce rates, abortion rates etc. have been dropping for decades.

Often religion is wrapped around bigotry in an attempt to justify it. Mr. B for example, who rather than following the Bible, cherry picks from it to force it to conform to his petty phobias and bigotries. Religion has been used to cover other crimes, like the Catholic Church’s (still running) international pedophile exchange program and worse. But there's plenty of good news there too: The younger generation is less religious, and those that are religious are less prone to the blind faith that the bigots and con artists depend on.

Perhaps unrelated, but there’s another interesting development: Something strange is going on in medicine. Major diseases like colon cancer, dementia and heart disease, are waning in wealthy countries, and improved diagnosis and treatment cannot fully explain it.

Those who think America is headed towards hell tend to be the bigots who oppose civil rights – first for blacks, then women, then the LGBT people. For an example, consult a mirror.

Not for most of us. Multiculturalism, at the very least, brings a much better selection of food!

Ensuring civil right for women and minorities protects the rights of us hetero male cons: A good example is the militarization of police. Not just all the military armor and weapons they're getting, but a great many combat veterans being recruited as police. After tours of duty in war zones in foreign cities where they were trained to treat the general public as more-than-potential enemies. Small wonder that dangerous SWAT raids in full armor are now common even for rounding up suspects of non-violent crimes, with a growing toll of innocent people killed or injured. It's dangerous - for white people too - not to fully comply with road-side stops even when the police go way too far.

The push-back on this has been almost entirely from blacks, but that push-back will benefit us old white hetero male cons too.

There's a difference between modern American cons and ideological ones like you. I meant the former.

Agreed, it may be a "hell" created in their own minds for some old white hetero male crybaby cons "in the dustbin of history", not one in real life.

The really classy thing about the mission:

Jupiter's moons are all named after his affairs and lovers. Juno is Jupiter's wife.

So NASA has sent Jupiter's wife to check out Jupiter and his affairs and lovers.

After all the time it took to get there, I'm certain all his affairs were in order.
