Well, I thought I was just posting a snarky remark with a little humour, but then I thought about it. Who supports the Pipeline? Who votes for oily politicians? Who supports less regulation on everything, including oil field and pipeline safety? Oh yeah, it's the ones who have the barrels of crude oil running down their street.

It's bewildering to me (well actually it's not, but let's just pretend for a minute) that right leaning folks are usually so against green energy. Solar panels and the like = less reliance on being connected to infrastructure = more independence and less reliance on the state.

It seems like this would be something both sides could agree on.

BBC: Florida sinkhole causes huge waste water leak into aquifer

About 980 million litres of contaminated water have leaked into Florida's main underground source of drinking water, state officials say.

The leak occurred after a huge sinkhole opened up under a phosphate fertiliser plant near Tampa, damaging the stack where waste water was stored.

The water contained phosphogypsum, a slightly radioactive by-product from the production of fertiliser.

But don't worry. The phosphate company Mosaic - which kept the leak secret for three weeks - said the leak posed no risk to the public.

The wife and I have been watching The Crown on Netflix. Even taken with a large grain of historical salt, it's pretty absorbing. The 4th episode, Wrath of God, is about London's Great Smog of 1952, when an inversion killed as many as 4000 Londoners with sulfur-dioxide and other fun shit coming out of coal-burning smokestacks. Some dandy parallels in there, for anyone who'd care to check it out.

"London Fog" was recognized as a health problem as far back as the 1200s and was killing large numbers of people in the 1880s.

Take hundreds of thousands of coal fires used for cooking and heating homes and businesses. Add the coal used to power the industrial revolution and an exponentially growing number of steam engines. Add the excrement from millions of horses transporting people and goods around the city.

This is why royalty - in other kingdoms too - had summer palaces well outside the cities.
