Iowa is a blue state.O Really wrote:Yes, but Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Iowa... Do we really care?
Well, I thought I was just posting a snarky remark with a little humour, but then I thought about it. Who supports the Pipeline? Who votes for oily politicians? Who supports less regulation on everything, including oil field and pipeline safety? Oh yeah, it's the ones who have the barrels of crude oil running down their street.

Yeah, but it's still Iowa.
I may have a lack of appreciation for much of the Midwest.

Or you could support green energy.

Temporary reprieve.

It's bewildering to me (well actually it's not, but let's just pretend for a minute) that right leaning folks are usually so against green energy. Solar panels and the like = less reliance on being connected to infrastructure = more independence and less reliance on the state.billy.pilgrim wrote:Seth Milner wrote:"The Only Way to Stop Spills is to Stop Offshore Drilling"

It seems like this would be something both sides could agree on.

The current right is dominated by the anti liberal sounding anything and is funded by self-serving corporations. That said, the Obama administration owns our current energy policy. Dems are funded by self-serving corporations, too.

BBC: Florida sinkhole causes huge waste water leak into aquifer
But don't worry. The phosphate company Mosaic - which kept the leak secret for three weeks - said the leak posed no risk to the public.About 980 million litres of contaminated water have leaked into Florida's main underground source of drinking water, state officials say.
The leak occurred after a huge sinkhole opened up under a phosphate fertiliser plant near Tampa, damaging the stack where waste water was stored.
The water contained phosphogypsum, a slightly radioactive by-product from the production of fertiliser.

A sinkhole in Florida, who could have predicted that? Not to cut Mosaic any slack, but I blame Florida's Department of Environmental Protection more for keeping it secret for three weeks.

Largest Bank in Norway Sells Its Assets in Dakota Access Pipeline
I've been getting tons of emails about the Dakota Access Pipeline for months and have only shared a very few of them here. One I got a couple of days ago was interesting. It said that 1000 water protectors have shown up . . . in the last week, in ND, in early winter. Wow.

Re: When 10000 barrels of crude oil roll down your street
The wife and I have been watching The Crown on Netflix. Even taken with a large grain of historical salt, it's pretty absorbing. The 4th episode, Wrath of God, is about London's Great Smog of 1952, when an inversion killed as many as 4000 Londoners with sulfur-dioxide and other fun shit coming out of coal-burning smokestacks. Some dandy parallels in there, for anyone who'd care to check it out.

Re: When 10000 barrels of crude oil roll down your street
"London Fog" was recognized as a health problem as far back as the 1200s and was killing large numbers of people in the 1880s.
Take hundreds of thousands of coal fires used for cooking and heating homes and businesses. Add the coal used to power the industrial revolution and an exponentially growing number of steam engines. Add the excrement from millions of horses transporting people and goods around the city.
This is why royalty - in other kingdoms too - had summer palaces well outside the cities.

Not just horses. The modern London sewerage system wasn't developed until the late 19th century.
