Non-Trump Republicans

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Good idea! I don't know if CPAC is officially anti-Trump. However:
Free the Delegates is a SuperPAC dedicated to blocking and reversing Donald Trump's political ascent. We are an independent group, and are not authorized by any presidential candidate or candidate committee. Our focus is on using unconventional and cost-effective tactics, as opposed to stereotypical high-cost, limited-yield methods with the objective of providing maximum donor value.

Do not vote for 'demagogue' Trump, USA Today tells its readers

Branding Donald Trump a "dangerous demagogue," USA Today on Thursday urged its readers not to vote for the Republican presidential candidate, but added that it was not endorsing his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton either.

The national newspaper said in an editorial that it had never taken sides in U.S. presidential elections in its 34-year history, but was abandoning the practice because the New York real estate developer was unfit for the presidency....

USA Today, published by Gannett Co Inc, said its editorial board was divided on Clinton, and some of the reservations about the former secretary of state centered on her "sense of entitlement, her lack of candor and her extreme carelessness in handling classified information."

Urging voters to stay true to their convictions, USA Today said: "Whatever you do, however, resist the siren song of a dangerous demagogue. By all means vote, just not for Donald Trump."
USA TODAY's Editorial Board

USA TODAY's Editorial Board, which forms the opinions expressed in USA TODAY's editorials, is the staff of the newspaper's opinion section. Its members are selected by USA TODAY's editorial page editor with a goal of reflecting the diversity of the nation's conversation. The board operates by consensus and reaches its opinions independently from any other part of USA TODAY or its parent company, Gannett. It is not aligned with either political party and, since the newspaper's founding in 1982, has never endorsed any political candidate....
I'm not adding them to the list, but it seems likely that some of USA TODAY's Editorial Board are Republicans that are not voting for Donald Trump or are even voting for Hillary Clinton.

Wimps. Not that I disagree with their comments, but they're arguably the #1 newspaper in the USA, ferpetesake. They owe readers more than that. How about comments on the alternatives and a real endorsement? Do they think a vote for Hillary, Limp Johnson, Stein, or abstention is all the same? It's not that they (or any other voter) has to actually like or enthusiastically support a given candidate, but these four are all we've got. If it's "please don't vote for Trump" then do they think the other three are equal? Puh-leeze.

It looks like USA TODAY's Editorial Board has 9 members, and they say that they operate by consensus. So, only one member opting for Johnson, Stein or abstention would have blocked a Hillary endorsement. I'm satisfied and impressed that they agree on opposing Trump, especially after 34 years of zero endorsements. There may be "comments on the alternatives" in other editorials, I don't know.

Maybe, but I didn't think "consensus" meant "unanimous."
But my point is that they don't have to say "Hillary is great and we love her." All they have to do is continue from their Trump-bash to say that of the remaining 3 candidates, one of them will be President and of those three, one doesn't know where Allepo is or can name a foreign leader, another has never managed to win any election other than a small-town council seat (589 votes), and the remaining one has been First Lady, NY Senator, and Secretary of State. Pick one.

There are different versions, but usually it means that one person can block a majority decision if they have strong and sincere reservations. Some versions make it more than just one person.

Pick one.

Have you checked to see whether they've done some of that in other editorials? This one was about Trump.

There are reasons to vote for Johnson or Stein other than thinking either might actually become POTUS and no editorial board is every going to say "Don't vote" even if it's so disgusted that it won't.

Yes, there is a bit of a conundrum there. I agree in general with former member Vox who insisted that one vote never matters. But large groups of votes do - or can if a race is relatively close. To be sure, a Hillary vote in Alabama is as worthless as a Stein vote (or an empty stein for that matter), but if one lives anywhere a race is close, a few votes can matter and "protest" or alt-voting can have unintended consequences (can't it, Mr. Nader?)

In other democracies a vote for a third party or "fringe" candidate isn't a waste.

In Canada the left-wing NDP has never won a federal election, and only once won second place as the official opposition. And yet they've had a MAJOR influence on Canadian policy. They popularize the ideas that the main parties choose to ignore. When one of their policies shows signs of popularity, the other parties adopt it. Our health care system originated with the NDP and was adopted by the Conservatives.

And then there's the right-wing Reform Party, which split off from the Conservative Party over "establishment" complaints that American Republicans would find very familiar. A few successful years later they absorbed the remainder of the Conservative Party, renamed themselves the Conservative Party of Canada - keeping the Reform Party leadership - and ran Canada for most of the last decade.

Having said that, the NDP and Reform parties had competent, credible leadership with experience as Members of Parliament or elected positions in Provincial politics. Too bad about Johnson and Stein. But the idea that a party "can't possibly win" is only ever true for one election. Give 'em a few votes, and they become more credible in the next one. And often they attract better leaders.

Sadly, we don't have a parliamentary system. This is a major reason we have a Corporatocracy. Both parties have been bought off and there's no electoral breathing space for anti-corporatists.

Nader's effect is disputed:
... Defenders of Nader, including Dan Perkins, argued that the margin in Florida was small enough that Democrats could blame any number of third-party candidates for the defeat, including Workers World Party candidate Monica Moorehead, who received 1,500 votes....

Democratic party strategist and Democratic Leadership Council (DLC) chair Al From expressed a different view. In the January 24, 2001, issue of the DLC's Blueprint magazine, he wrote, "I think they're wrong on all counts. The assertion that Nader's marginal vote hurt Gore is not borne out by polling data. When exit pollers asked voters how they would have voted in a two-way race, Bush actually won by a point. That was better than he did with Nader in the race."
Nationally, Hillary's lead is the same +2.9% whether it's a 2-Way race or a 4-Way race.

In North Carolina, Trump vs. Clinton has Trump up by 0.3% and Trump vs. Clinton vs. Johnson (Stein isn't on our ballot) has Trump up by 0.8%, minimal impact. If the electoral count is close nationally, I suspect many 3rd party voters will hold their noses and choose either Trump or Clinton. If the electoral count is close nationally and it remains close in NC, I'll hold my nose and vote Clinton. If not, once Hillary proves to be right of Obama's GOP-lite, I'll sport my "Don't Blame Me" bumper sticker proudly. :P

The board operates by consensu and reaches its opinions independently from any other part of USA TODAY or its parent company, Gannett. It is not aligned with either political party and, since the newspaper's founding in 1982, has never endorsed any political candidate....
It has however issued a non-endorsement once before: White supremacist David Duke, running for governor of Louisiana in 1991.

Not that there's any connection...

Dang, you proved that you're smarter than me. :( ;)

Or, the difference is irrelevant and Seth Milner is an idiot.
