Christmas List

Unread post by JTA »

Fellas.

I know some of us have ladies. I also know some of us hate shopping so how about helping a brother out.

What are you buying for your ladies, mother, girlfriend, daughter, whatever.

Bonus question. Need some gift ideas for men too.

I'm getting my new driver niece a roadside emergency kit and maybe some simple jewelry item.

Lady O likes experiences instead of stuff. We haven't bought each other Christmas gifts past the "stocking stuffer" type for years. But we've got some great memories, like the year we were front row at Cirque du Soleil; the year we did Manhattan for Christmas, went to "Messiah" at Carnegie, had loge seats for "Chicago," and skated Rockefeller Center; the year we went to Cabo because she found what looked like a good deal and when we got there our "junior suite" wasn't available so they upgraded us to the penthouse section for the same discounted price... But not every Christmas experience has to be expensive - it just needs to be special.

I'm assuming you mean girlfriend (lady) so I think I would be safe in saying that most women like jewelry; it doesn't have to be the Zales or Jared's variety, or, heaven forbid, the Dollar Store variety. Target, Walmart, Kmart and some of the smaller privately-owned jewelry stores have a decent selection at affordable prices. (shun Lowe's and Home Depot) When shopping for a GF, keep in mind that next Christmas, someone else could be wondering what to get her for a gift, (not being a smart-ass here, but the world is what it is) so keep your spending frugal, but not cheap.

Forget clothes, shoes, and handbags unless she's shopping with you; forget small appliances as well. A new phone case, maybe?

Good luck...I have no ideas for men; most are pickier than I am.

We have fun every day, and every day is special - and appreciated. But we both agree that experiences are better than stuff. Some years we've bought "ourselves" something, but mostly we build memories.

Noooooo! Jewelry from a generic store is most definitely not going to get you laid.

 That's what I'm talking about!

When I was planning to retire at 62, I had plans to do exactly as you speak of ... however, MS makes different plans for you.
I didn't envision our retirement years to be like they are; but life is what it is.

Enjoy it to the hilt, O Really.

Not that kind of "special", especially since:
Don't get her any princess stuff, either.

Certainly not, at least not personal experience. I have seen the experience of others, though. :o
Jewelry falls into clear categories: there's "costume" stuff, that everybody likes to own, but has no meaning and little value. So as a gift, it sucks. Then there's fairly nice stuff designed for gifts, but it all looks alike (think the "open hearts") so as a gift, it's no better than anything else that everybody has one of. And then there's stuff that has value and meaning that she'll wear most all the time an enjoy pretty much forever. If you aren't going to give her that stuff, then forget the jewelry and buy her something else.

What about the quarter machine stuff? I was thinking a t. Rex ring, or maybe a plastic arrowhead pendant. Perhaps even the finest cubic zirconia from Walmart, then again I ain't trying to marry the girl yet so maybe another time.

I'm unsure whether or not it's kosher to celebrate Christmas since her people murdered Jesus. Christmas trees might be offensive to Jews because they hate Jesus with a passion for bringing the hammer of Christ down upon them

For Christmas, my pops usually sends me 50 bucks in the most generic Christmas card imaginable. Like the ones you get from dollar general with a snowman on the front and "merry Christmas" printed in 12pt times new roman font on the vast expanse of empty white within. Then underneath it another "merry Christmas" written illegible by my pops.

For Christmas I usually mail my dad 50 bucks, only instead of a generic snowman Christmas card I send him a generic CVS card with a Christmas tree on front, "Happy Holidays" written within because I'm an atheist bastard having declared war on Christmas in my infancy when I didn't get that nerf gun I wanted.

I apparently did. For some reason I really did believe in Santa Claus maybe longer than average. But when I found out he was a big hoax, I figured Jesus was too. Turned into an instant cynic. Never outgrew it. If you want a kid to be religious, don't let them believe in Santa.
