Before the election the Republican Party will try to block everything and anything that Obama does, even when - including missile reduction - it's long-term Republican policy. Not only have we seen this repeatedly over the last four years, prominant Republicans have been quite open about it.

Witness the Republican use of filibusters in Congress on anything and everything in the first two years - no, this is not politics as usual - and the 15 years of Republican health-care policy that suddenly became unconstitutional commie marxist socialism the moment Obama adopted it. Or any number of other Republican policies he stuck to.

Obama's words were a simple honest recognition of this. Any remotely honest American politician in either party will agree with him.

A newer, better system that better addresses what Europe might face. The Polish people favored it by a 20% margin. It was called a better system because the replaced system was mainly intended to stop missiles from Iran, and Poland wasn't under threat of missiles from Iran.

Obama's reoriented missile defense system that took the missiles out of Poland, yes Poland, and put them in Rumania, yes Rumania, still provides coverage of eastern european Russia, the radars are now in Turkey. The Russians/Putin does not like that and Obama's "flexibility" remark was a concession to him that after I win the election I can better accomodate your concerns. Why would he have said that if he didn't intend to pacify Putin?
