When North Carolina lawmakers passed a fake "repeal" of H.B. 2, I promised you we would continue our fight for the rights and dignity of all LGBT people in our state. Today we delivered on that promise.

We just filed a legal challenge to House Bill 142, a law that — like its predecessor, the infamous H.B. 2 — was designed to treat LGBT people as second-class citizens and particularly single out transgender people for discrimination.

H.B. 2 was so unpopular, discriminatory, and toxic to our state that legislators were forced to rewrite it as H.B. 142 in order to sidestep criticism.

But make no mistake: H.B. 142 is still a hateful law that seeks to allow discrimination against LGBT people, and transgender people in particular. It prevents cities and counties from being able to protect LGBT people from discrimination until December 2020 and creates uncertainty about whether transgender people will be treated as criminals for using restrooms that match their gender.

H.B. 142 is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. It has a new look but still keeps discrimination intact. That’s why the ACLU and Lambda Legal are challenging this law – just as we challenged H.B. 2 in court last year – on behalf of a brave group of LGBT North Carolinians....

It’s time to make clear to anti-LGBT legislators: You haven’t pulled the wool over our eyes. We must finally end state-sanctioned discrimination in North Carolina.

I think the vast minority of protests with property destruction are counter-productive, even if it feels warranted to some. Of course, whiny hypocrites that have spent their entire socialist supposed careers prepping for, abetting and perhaps engaging in organized violence should be the last to cast stones.
