So I've got some items listed on Craigslist, and have generally done pretty well getting rid of stuff there in the past. I've found that once an item is priced over a couple hundred dollars, the scammers come out like roaches in the light. My standard response is "In person cash sales only" and that deters most of them without alienating a real prospect (in the unlikely event I misjudged). Some, however are beyond belief.

Text from area code 661, Southern California

HIM: Do you still have it (item) foe sale?

ME: Yes. In person cash sale only.

HIM: Ok I will make the offer as well But i will be sending you cashier check from bank to you in your name and address and I will make sure the check clear before I will arranged for the pick up at your door step let let me know if can take it so that i can mail out the check in the morning.

ME: Was there something about "in person cash only" that you missed?

HIM: i understand..I wish i could come over with cash or for pickup but am really busy right now and please trust me with this deal..i will wait for you to get your cash first before my pickup agent arrive for pickup....kindly text me your full name and address to mail the check today

ME: OK, send me a copy of your drivers' license, a copy of a credit card, the account number in the bank you'll use so I can verify funds, and the name and contact of the pickup company.

HIM: [crickets]
