SC ID Theft Update
Updated to report that a malicious email got into the state's security.
http://openchannel.nbcnews.com/_news/20 ... snhp&pos=2
Here's the funny part. Teapartier and "smaller gummint" and anti-regulation Governor Haley says,
"Haley on Tuesday blamed the federal government for not requiring Social Security numbers to be encrypted. She released a letter to IRS Commissioner Steven Miller “to strongly encourage the Internal Revenue Service to require all states to have stronger security measures for handling federal tax information, particularly encryption of tax information that is stored or ‘at rest.’”

teabaggers are always the first to demand bigger government when they stub their toes.

Yes, she already tossed the Revenue Director under the bus.Vrede wrote:It's not just the demand for bigger government, it's that TPer Haley is trying to divert blame to the feds for an SC foul-up.

They need to store sensitive information in filing cabinets with locks.

It keeps getting murkier. Turns out SC has been hit around 30 times since 2005, but didn't do anything substantive to improve security. Despite Nikki Heat saying encryption wasn't "necessary" and then saying it should be "required," a cursory review finds that SC neighbors NC and GA encrypt all their data. Even Alabama, fer pete's sake... http://www.local15tv.com/news/local/sto ... rTIjg.cspx
But its' probably just Obama's Chicago union thugs playing games with the 'necks.

From what I have read, those who filed tax returns electronically are at risk. It if fotuitous that my returns were rejected when I tried to file electronically using Turbotax because the files were too big, and had to be sent by snail mail. That was years ago, and I assumed that it would still be the case, so haven't attempted in recent years to file electronically.

They should have encrypted it with a Caesar cypher so as to confound the hackers.O Really wrote:It keeps getting murkier.
