Re: Gun Legislation
Subject: Shoot down SB 192 and HB 216!
Honestly, what is wrong with some Republicans?
Every child, every teacher, every member of a school’s
staff is entitled to a safe environment at school. No one should live with the fear
that sending their kids to school may be placing them in harm's way. No school staff
should feel his or her lives are in jeopardy for simply showing up at work. Keeping
guns off school property ensures a safer and more supportive learning environment
for our children but we also need more helping professionals, more restorative
justice programs, and other constructive ways to improve school safety. We need
common sense, effective solutions that work.
I support legislation that works towards creating safe, secure schools for all our
students and teachers including: keeping guns off schools grounds, not arming
teachers at school, increasing the number of social workers, counselors,
psychologists, and nurses in our schools, implementing violence prevention and
threat reporting programs at school, increasing funding for school security, and
passing comprehensive, common sense gun safety laws that work to protect our
children.

Vote NO to Senate Bill 192 and House Bill 216!
I await your reply.

Cool, I enjoy that you're too slow to see that my email is not entirely
"canned", and that you're so immature as to take the time to send me this
sarcastic snark. I figured out that you're a Repug before looking you up.
Keep at it, you're representing your party and ammosexuals perfectly!

Re: Gun Legislation
Not a surprise:
These 2 Laws Are Tied to Lower Gun Homicide Rates
New research suggests restricting who can have a gun is more effective than banning a type of gun when it comes to curbing homicides.
... Across U.S. states, laws banning gun possession for people who had been convicted of a violent misdemeanor were associated with an 18.1 percent reduction in gun homicide rates, Siegel's study found, while universal background checks were linked to a 14.9 percent decline....

I saw a story this morning that Wayne La Pierre is saying the NRA is at risk of going broke and he's sent out a frantic fund raising call. The panic is blamed on some case in NY and Wayne blamed Governor Cuomo for this turn of events. I won't be sending Wayne any money and may instead send him an invoice for 100 dollars as recompense for my being exposed to his vile rants.

Supreme Court Refuses to Block Ban on Bump Stocks
"no noted dissents," but this was just a jump-the-line request for emergency relief. Lots of challenges moving forward in the courts through the normal process.

True that, but if they had thought the plaintiffs were likely to prevail, they'd possibly have stayed the ban pending appeal.

Guy keeps a loaded pistol with one in the chamber in his diaper bag. "The gun went off" (obviously disproving the theory that "guns don't kill people"
) And what do the cops say?
"This was a tragic accident and condolences from the VHPD and VHFD go out to the family involved," the police department said in a release.
Let's see, what other form of negligence that results in injury to a child would be accepted with an "Oh well..." Ummmmm - that would be none.
Happy 20th to Columbine, BTW. I looked for a list of all the firearm safety measures that have been taken since then but all i could find was articles about school shootings, office shootings, domestic shootings, bar shootings ...

Sure the guy died so there are no charges, but couldn't they say "it's a tragic result of not using adequate precautions with firearms" or "it's sad that another death and injury was caused by carelessness"? Of course, given that the shooter/shootee was a black guy, it's surprising the cops didn't find the self-inflicted shot to be "justified."

More seriously, that would be the cops just saying what we're ALL thinking, anyhow, while likely causing the family to go ballistic over rubbing it in.

I don't know what the concealed carry law is in Alabama, if any, but they didn't mention whether he was legally carrying or not. Not that it really matters in the overall scheme of things, but it's just so sickening that "opps" covers so many preventable gun incidences.

Two idiots playing in waterfalls:
"The first waterfall rescue of the year highlights the extreme dangers around waterfalls, forest managers say, especially when people ignore posted warning signs and enter areas that are off-limits."

Re: Gun Legislation
Watchdog groups sue federal agency over NRA's alleged campaign coordination 'scheme'
A pair of legal groups sued the Federal Election Commission on Wednesday, seeking to compel the agency to enforce the law amid what they allege is mounting evidence that the National Rifle Association has engaged in “an elaborate scheme … to unlawfully coordinate with candidates it supports for federal office,” including with the 2016 presidential campaign of Donald Trump.
The Campaign Legal Center, a nonpartisan campaign finance watchdog, filed the lawsuit on behalf of the Giffords Law Center, a gun-control advocacy group led by former Democratic lawmaker from Arizona Gabby Giffords. The lawsuit accuses the NRA of “using a network of shell corporations” to circumvent contribution limits and coordinate approximately $35 million in advertisement spending with the campaigns of at least seven Republican candidates over the last three election cycles, “thereby making millions of dollars of illegal, unreported, and excessive in-kind contributions.”
But while the NRA deliberately circumvented FEC rules that prohibit vendor coordination between campaigns and outside groups, the complaint alleges, the federal agency responsible for oversight of election spending – whose members frequently deadlock on matters along partisan lines -- has not taken any enforcement action.
“The FEC is supposed to be the nation’s election watchdog, but in this case, it didn’t bite, bark, or even whimper,” said Adam Skaggs, chief counsel for the Giffords Law Center, in statement. “Instead, it turned a blind eye … In a desperate attempt to hold onto power and influence, NRA executives have flagrantly ignored our campaign finance laws and undermined the integrity of our election system. The FEC must bring illegal campaign conduct into the light of day.” ...
In addition to the Trump campaign, the complaint alleges that the NRA has shown a years-long pattern of coordinating with several other congressional campaigns in a similar operation since at least 2014, including the campaigns of Sens. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., Tom Cotton, R-Ark., Cory Gardner, R-Colo., Ron Johnson, R-Wis., and Josh Hawley, R-Mo., and Matt Rosendale, who ran unsuccessfully against Democratic Sen. Jon Tester of Montana in 2018....
