Guns, race, religion, terror, wingnut thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

I should have named the topic I started, One time this Texan . . ., "Some dubmass in Texas".
After I posted I figured I should have put it in War on Women. Texas just stuck

Texans routinely span several of our most odious threads. This thread also works for its "religion ... wingnut" aspects, and misogyny like 1 FAT CAN's and racism are 2 sides of the same coin.

They do love them some guns out here. Not just real guns, although there is a gun shop everywhere you turn, including "Panhandle Gunslingers" that promoted "March is Buy Your Husband a Gun Month". But gun images and symbolism is everywhere, too. Like smoker grills shaped like pistols, where the smoker tank is the cylinder and the smoke comes out the barrel. And apparently the only place in the country that would put up with having a nuclear weapon assembly/disassembly plant next door.

That was long but interesting.
Judge demands white supremacist appear in person for deposition. He refuses, saying he is afraid to come to US.

The founder of one of the most highly trafficked neo-Nazi websites must face questioning in person under oath in the United States about allegations he called for a "troll storm" against a Jewish woman, a federal judge ruled.

But that's not likely to happen, according to Andrew Anglin's lawyer Marc Randazza.

"He doesn't live in the United States and doesn't want to come to the United States," Randazza says. "I really can't tell you why...But I am duty bound to respect it."

Anglin, who was raised in the U.S. but has claimed he is no longer a citizen, was willing to sit for a deposition via video conference or in an embassy and argued in court motions that he should be able to do so instead of coming to the United States.

Anglin has argued that he does not live in the United States and "claims he fears violence from Southern Poverty Law Center supporters and harassment from the Southern Poverty Law Center itself," according to court documents. Those are allegations the court "correctly concluded..." "were unfounded and without basis," David Dinielli, deputy legal director of the SPLC told CNN.

Anglin, founder of the Daily Stormer website, is being sued in a lawsuit which seeks to hold him liable after using his website to encourage his thousands of readers to contact Tanya Gersh. Most of the messages contained hate-filled language and centered on the fact that Gersh is Jewish. Anglin has argued his speech is protected by the First Amendment.

Gersh, with the help of the Southern Poverty Law Center, is suing Anglin for "invasion of privacy, intentional infliction of emotional distress and violations of Montana's Anti-Intimidation Act." That suit was filed in April 2017 in the US District Court for Montana....
Pansy, they all are.

Capitol Hill hearing on online hate sees it firsthand

A congressional hearing on online hate turned into a vivid demonstration of the problem Tuesday when a YouTube livestream of the proceedings was bombarded with racist and anti-Semitic comments from internet users.

YouTube disabled the live chat section of the streaming video about 30 minutes into the hearing because of what it called "hateful comments."

The incident came as executives from Google and Facebook appeared before the House Judiciary Committee to answer questions about the companies' role in the spread of hate crimes and the rise of white nationalism in the U.S. They were joined by leaders of such human rights organizations as the Anti-Defamation League and the Equal Justice Society, along with conservative commentator Candace Owens.

Neil Potts, Facebook director of public policy, and Alexandria Walden, counsel for free expression and human rights at Google, defended policies at the two companies that prohibit material that incites violence or hate. Google owns YouTube.

"There is no place for terrorism or hate on Facebook," Potts testified. "We remove any content that incites violence."

The hearing broke down into partisan disagreement among the lawmakers and among some of the witnesses, with Republican members of Congress denouncing as hate speech Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar's criticism of American supporters of Israel.

As the bickering went on, committee chairman Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., was handed a news report that included the hateful comments about the hearing on YouTube. He read them aloud, along with the users' screen names, as the room quieted.

"This just illustrates part of the problem we're dealing with," Nadler said.

The hearing comes as the U.S. is experiencing an increase in hate crimes and hate groups.

There were 1,020 known hate groups in the country in 2018, the fourth straight year of growth, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors extremism in the U.S. Hate crimes, meanwhile, rose 30 percent in the three-year period ending in 2017, the organization said, citing FBI figures....

House Hearing on White Nationalism Devolves Into Stomach-Churning Hellscape

It didn’t take long for Tuesday’s House Judiciary Committee hearing on the rising threat of white nationalism to devolve into a complete farce, thanks to a pair of ultra-conservative witnesses and a trove of Republican congressmen eager to appease them while paying lip-service to condemning hate.

Joining representatives from the Anti-Defamation League, Equal Justice Society, and the National Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law—as well as officials from tech giants Facebook and Google—were Zionist Organization of America President Mort Klein, a noted Islamophobic bigot, and Turning Point USA spokeswoman Candace Owens, who recently had to walk back comments in which she seemed to praise, um, Adolf Hitler. Right off the bat, it was clear neither had much interest in discussing the rise of white nationalism, instead choosing to use the hearing as a platform to voice their own grievances with Muslims, the media, and Democrats....

After Klein came Owens, who kicked off her introduction by portraying herself as a victim of the media, called the GOP’s racist “Southern Strategy” to attract white voters in the late 1960s a “myth,” insisted that Antifa are the real racists, and concluded by claiming that any suggestion that white nationalism is on the rise is an electoral strategy spun by Democrats....

Good LORD, this sucks.
NZ terrorist Brenton Tarrant Manifesto: The ‘Great Replacement’ Rant

... On Whether He Likes Donald Trump & Candace Owens

He asked himself ‘were/are you a supporter of Donald Trump?’ The manifesto gives this answer: ‘As a symbol of renewed white identity and common purpose? Sure. As a policy maker and leader? Dear god no.’

… Of (Candace) Owens, he said, ‘Yes, the person that has influenced me above all was Candace Owens. Each time she spoke I was stunned by her insights and her own views helped push me further and further into the belief of violence over meekness. Though I will have to disavow some of her beliefs, the extreme actions she calls for are too much, even for my tastes.’
Not sure what he's referring to, but those must be VERY extreme actions that she calls for. Owens whines and denies. Ummm, idiot crybaby, "the media" and "The Left" are NOT saying that you "inspired a mosque shooting in New Zealand," the rightwing terrorist is.

I consider they got there pretty quick; I only read about this moron yesterday and now he's in jail; having prior arrests for being a felon in possession of a weapon, he'll probably be out of action for quite a while unless trump pardons him.

Wingnut update: I read today about a Washington state representative who vetoed a proposed bill to give nurses a mandated break at work because she says that "nurses probably play cards all day" anyway and don't need a mandated break. She was talking about facilities that have 25 beds or less, but still.......wingnut

Hutterite kid accidentally shoots another kid -- in Alberta no less.

But notice a difference:
Feist said as the shooting appears to be accidental, it's unlikely the 13-year-old will be charged, but police are weighing charges against the gun's owner for improper storage.

"From my experience and across Canada, the knowledge and efforts to make firearms safe have gotten far better. So in our area, certainly, it's a rare occurrence that we get anybody accidentally shot," he said. "In this instance, obviously the law wasn't followed."

Feist said the gun has been seized...

Here in TN we have no deficit of guns wielding, quasi religious, terror inducing wingnuts - especially in Unicoi County, the border county with NC. On the night before Easter a guy was shot and killed (so far no details other than it was no accident) and just this morning the lead story on the local fascist tv station reports someone in Unicoi stabbed (also no further details yet but I would not be surprised to learn it was payback for the Saturday night massacre). Stay tuned.

Poker, anyone? Washington state lawmaker who belittled nurses gets 1,700 decks of playing cards in mail

... Republican Sen. Maureen Walsh said she plans to donate the cards to nursing homes and veterans' centers.

“I like poker as much as anyone, but I think I’m pretty well stocked up right now,” Walsh said in a statement released Wednesday.

Although Walsh has apologized for her comments during a debate on a bill requiring uninterrupted rest and meal breaks for nurses, she said the remarks were taken out of context by supporters of the bill.

“Frankly, I am very embarrassed by the comments, but I am more embarrassed by the fact that this whole issue has been sort of gamed politically, and I am really sorry for that,” she said on the Senate floor Tuesday.
The ol' not-an-apology apology.
The state House and Senate on Wednesday passed a final version of the bill without an amendment supported by Walsh. The bill would apply to all hospitals in Washington, including hospitals with less than 25 beds that Walsh wanted to exempt from the mandatory uninterrupted breaks.

Her office has received more than 35,000 phone calls and 10,000 emails since social media posts of her comments circulated last week, according to a statement.

About 760,000 people signed a petition calling on the Walla Walla County lawmaker to shadow a nurse, and Walsh has agreed....

When you get right down to it, laws do almost nothing to prevent anything; people still get murdered, defrauded, and assaulted, all of which there are laws against. Laws do noting but affirm a tenuous link to a morality that will never be universal. The root problem is that laws cannot compete with human emotion. The only way law will actually work is if all of us are like Mr. Spock.

Yep, the only success law can claim is pointing to the ones that get caught. But it's like fishing; more don't get caught. Hell, there's thousands of law flaunters out there; some will never be caught, some will be caught and express remorse or regret, some even want to be caught. It's really a mess and terminal quagmire.

I'm not sure if you think I misunderstood you before, but in any case, yes, the fear of the consequence of being caught is a deterrent but that fear is typically overcome in a fraction of a second, at which time the crime manifests. Human emotion, or the lack of it, is what will cause or prevent all crime. Misunderstoodness is a contributing factor.
