War on Women

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

I think if it were me, I'd offer the following comments/choices to Lady Boatrocker:
1. I really really don't want to go visit your family. You know that I'm very uncomfortable and that the only things I can do are to (a) suck it up and accept the toxic environment or (b) be rude and argumentative to them. Casual conversation isn't an option.

2. I'm pretty sure they don't care if they ever see me again.

3. If it's truly important to you that I go, we should stay at a hotel so I have some opportunity to be away from them, and I will take advantage of that opportunity a lot.

4. If I have to go and we have to stay with them, I will take every chance to get out by myself (or with you if you want to come along), but I absolutely cannot sit around with them any longer listening to their politics and religion.

5. If you go visit them by yourself, I'll be sure to do something majorly nice for you - what would you like?

Or, you could just go, be a total asshole, start fights and your wife would get told never to bring you back, but that probably wouldn't set so well with Lady B. ;)
I wish it were that cut and dried. These people have been my family, for 43 years. I have always gotten on very well with most of them. Given, it has always required me to avoid religious discussions, and I did not engage much in political discourse, mostly because I did not relish talking politics.
Even as I began drifting to the left, I was not so put off by their RWingy-ness as I was just not going to engage in debate. The issues were not that dire and our ideologies we just not that far apart. But all that shit changed with the election of Obama, who counted me among his voters, twice. The hateful, racist bullshit emails, the eagerness with which they dived into the birther bullshit and the Moozlum bullshit, all that shit just caught me off guard, coming from people whom I, mostly, found to be intelligent, thoughtful people with differing politics. And since 2016 I have, right or wrong, begun to question everything I once believed about people I loved. And still struggle to love. I know my wife's heart; I know she is very put off by the trumpsucking and doesn't understand it any more than I do. She is struggling, as well. But she in invested by blood; I am not, I have come to realize, and I don't know where I stand anymore.
I really isn't as simple as I wish it were, even as I find myself unable to be silent any longer.
Just thought to extend my sympathies for your nephew in law for his tragic accident. This kind of stuff sort of forces families to confront things in a fundamental human sort of way. I can relate to your alienation from the in law family; my sister, who is my only sibling, is a right wing nutjob as well as a Christian religious fanatic. We live a couple hundred miles apart, which is probably for the best. I still love her as my little sister but can never reconcile or accept her extreme right wing politics or fundamentalist religious beliefs; she believes that Rapture shit, like folks are just gonna float up into the fucking sky at the appropriate time, even though from what I understand of that nonsense, only 144 thousand floaters will be accepted.....the Jesus lottery, as it were. I just roll my eyes about it and carry on. Anyway, just wanted to let you know you're not the only one who has to accept, or at least accede to, the kind of shit a normal person would discard as bullshit. Hang in there. I have a Ralph Steadman t shirt with one of his splatter drawings and the caption "I am not like the others." It's an affirmation of my resistance.

Edit: that bit about the 144 thousand is not part of the Rupture; it's from a different sect. I get these tales mixed up. My own theory is that when the time comes I will put on my my my my my boogie shoes and my mistletoe belt.

Anti-Abortion Lawmakers Have No Idea How Women’s Bodies Work
We cannot ask women to follow laws written by men who believe our bodies work like a game of ‘Marble Run’

ast night, the Alabama Senate voted to make abortion illegal from the moment of conception, punishable by 99 years in prison, with no exceptions for rape or incest. It will be the most extreme anti-abortion law in the nation, voted into effect by men who had trouble articulating the most basic facts about women’s biology, conception, or even how the law itself would function.

When Senator Clyde Chambliss, a Republican, for example, was asked if the law would allow for incest victims to obtain abortions, he responded: “Yes, until she knows she’s pregnant.”

He did not elaborate on how someone would have an abortion before she knows she’s pregnant, outside of claiming, “It takes time for all the chromosomes to come together.”

Women’s bodies, lives, and futures are quite literally in the hands of men who seemingly couldn’t pass a high school health class. That’s part of what’s so hard about watching these debates: It’s not just that women’s rights and autonomy are being legislated away, but that it’s being done by complete morons.

This lack of remedial understanding of women’s bodies is not limited to Alabama. Representative John Becker of Ohio, a Republican, for example, sponsored a bill to limit insurance coverage for abortions, but claimed that it would have an exception for ectopic pregnancies, when the fertilized egg implants outside the uterus. “That treatment would be removing the embryo from the fallopian tube and reinserting it in the uterus,” he said, explaining a procedure that doesn’t exist and isn’t medically possible.

There is also Texas state Representative Dan Flynn, a Republican, who believes abortion requires cutting into a woman’s uterus, or Vito Barbieri, the Idaho state Representative, a Republican, who thought you could give a woman a remote gynecological exam by having her swallow a tiny camera. And who among us can forget former Missouri Congressman Todd Akin, who once claimed that women can’t get pregnant if they’ve been raped because “the female body has ways to shut the whole thing down.” (Akin was not the only Republican congressman who believed this: In 1995, North Carolina’s former state Representative Henry Aldridge, claimed that when women are raped, “the juices don’t flow, the body functions don’t work, and they don’t get pregnant.”)

We cannot ask women to follow laws written by men who believe our bodies work like a game of Marble Run.

It’s not just that their science is so woefully wrong. The politicians passing these arcane laws seem to have zero understanding of how the implementation of their legislation will impact real-life women.

When asked how the state would treat women who have had miscarriages — how would they be able to prove they didn’t end the pregnancy? — Chambliss, the Alabama Senator, responded that the burden of proof would be on the prosecution. Does that mean that all miscarriages will be investigated? (If you think that’s out of the realm of possibility, consider that a Virginia lawmaker once tried to pass a bill that would require women to report their miscarriages to the police within 24 hours.)

Sometimes, though, lawmakers’ absolute ignorance over the laws they are passing provides necessary ammunition to American women. When Alabama Senator Bobby Singleton, a Democrat, pointed out that Alabama’s new law could punish those who dispose of fertilized eggs at an IVF clinic, Chambliss responded, “The egg in the lab doesn’t apply. It’s not in a woman. She’s not pregnant.”

So much for “life begins at conception.” Chambliss proved what feminists have been saying all along — this isn’t about protecting fertilized eggs. It never has been. These laws are about men controlling women’s bodies. Even if they don’t know the first thing about how they work.
    :confusion-scratchheadblue:

This would be fodder for a sit-com if it wasn't so serious.

Some like to argue that there are a lot of ways to avoid getting pregnant and that anybody who does is her own fault. To some degree that's true, but it's also the same as saying that a person who has an injury in an accident that's their fault isn't entitled to medical care. It doesn't do any good to tell someone you shoulda coulda and then act as if there is no immediate situation to handle.

The Government’s Role – law, passion, and courage
Those who stand for abortion “rights” will quickly say that the baby in the womb is not human life and therefore has none of the rights associated with human life. However, the evidence is overwhelming that the unborn baby is a living human from the point of conception. Here are some milestones of baby development:
At conception, a new life begins that possesses human DNA and is the offspring of human parents; it can only legitimately be described as human life.
A baby’s heart begins to beat between 18-24 days after conception.
At 8 weeks a baby can feel pain. At 9 weeks after conception, a baby is able to bend its fingers around an object in its hand and sucks its thumb. At 20 weeks, a baby can hear and recognize its mother’s voice.
At 23 weeks, a baby can survive outside the womb.
It is simple: the law should protect every person’s life, including unborn children. Everyone has a God-given right to life and it is against the very character of God to take someone’s life in an act of murder.
There are issues that the government should have limited power to execute: issues such as taxation, immigration, economics, speed limits, etc. But it should have no power to decide that innocent human life isn’t worth protecting. In fact, God established the government to punish those who take an innocent life (Romans 13:4). Whatever we can do to protect life – voting in leaders, organizing marches, petitioning or calling our elected officials, etc. – we should do it. https://www.afa.net/the-stand/family/20 ... -abortion/

GA mother pleads guilty to allowing men to rape her 5 and 6-year-old children for cash: As their mother waited in the living room, one of the men, 78-year-old Richard Office, who the girls referred to as "Pop," took the girls into the bedroom where he molested both of the girls.
Additionally, he raped the 5-year-old girl, causing her to bleed while making the older sister rubbed his feet, according to the DA's office. Afterward, Office reportedly gave the girls $100 and the girls’ mother immediately took the money from them.
The same thing happened on a separate occasion, where Summerlin took her children to Alfredo Trejo's home and allowed him to molest and rape the girls. Trejo also paid the girls after he sexually abused them, which Summerlin took from them immediately after.
“It is difficult to imagine facts that are more horrific than those found in this case," District Attorney Paul L. Howard Jr. said. "I am hoping these two little girls can somehow survive this abuse and grow into healthy adults who can lead a productive and fulfilling life.” https://www.wbtw.com/national/ga-mother ... YN8LsiRUM8
