Drag queen story hour in communities nationwide, but some see controversy

The non-profit literacy program Drag Queen Story Hour has volunteers read books to kids in libraries and community centers nationwide. But the program has been met with backlash and protests in some areas.

I don't know.....the fact they reported the story allows them to retain their status as perpetual victims and attempt to create a general sense of victimhood for their mass of potential perpetual victims......a vicious cycle as it were.

First Hendersonville Pride Day designation divides residents

More than 150 supporters and opponents packed a room Thursday as city officials proclaimed June 15, 2019 Hendersonville Pride Day.

Mayor Barbara Volk read a proclamation during the City Council meeting that designates the day. Organizers said Hendersonville Pride Day will be a day of commemoration, food, fun and festivities, and a day for the community to celebrate inclusiveness and diversity.

It’s the first of its kind in Henderson County.

“We, as a city, welcome the guests and residents who will gather to celebrate and honor the fight against discrimination and prejudice towards LGBTQ individuals during the inaugural Hendersonville Pride Day,” the proclamation states.

The proclamation was issued at the start of council’s regularly scheduled June meeting, which was moved to the larger City Operations Center on Williams Street due to the anticipated crowds.

The chamber room, with a maximum occupancy of 150 people, was nearly filled 45 minutes prior to the meeting. Fifteen minutes prior, the room was at capacity and the fire department barred any more people from entering.

The day was chosen to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, a series of violent confrontations between police and gay rights activists in New York City that occurred June 28, 1969. It’s considered to be the beginning of the modern-day civil rights movement.

Hendersonville Pride day will coincide with events occurring all over the world during June commemorating Stonewall and celebrating LGBTQ pride.

News of the upcoming proclamation did not come without opposition. An online petition was created and garnered nearly 700 signatures in protest of the Pride Day event.

The room was roughly split in half between supporters and opponents of the proclamation. Twelve people spoke during public comment, which was also split. Each speaker was given a minute and was held to it.

Opponents who spoke were mostly local pastors and preachers. They called for the city to not issue the proclamation and quoted Bible verses.

Supporters who spoke largely thanked the mayor and council for the proclamation.

Following Volk’s reading of the proclamation, the room burst with cheers and jeers. Afterward, supporters gathered outside in a group, waving flags and holding signs in celebration.

Hendersonville Pride day will kick off with a movie at 7 p.m. Friday, June 14 at the Center for Arts and Inspiration.

Not all pastors/churches though:

A picnic at Patton Park will take place at noon Saturday, June 15. At 3:30 p.m. and again at 7 p.m., the Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus will present their Stonewall Concert at Trinity Presbyterian Church.

I met that guy one time; he knocked on my door and was running for some office and wanted to put a sign in my yard and I told him he could. I had no idea he was crazy, but then again, he had no idea who I was either. I can't remember what he was running for; maybe his life. In any case, he lost.

I'm happy to scream about the clearly homophobic tRump administration trying to stifle display of the rainbow flag. But the issue did make me wonder what flags, if any, are usually flown on the embassy flag staff along with the US flag? I read the rainbow has flown in past years (don't know how long, but seems to have started under Obama) without issue, but would there typically be flag displays for commemorative purposes? Other than the rainbow, what has been flown, particularly pre-Obama. MIA flag? Actually, if the policy has historically been to fly only the US flag on its own pole, I have no problem with that.
