The homophobic thread :>

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

 At least they don't have a photo of some missing guy on the carton. Besides, I would never buy something labeled "hetero milk" because I wouldn't know what the hell it was.

You might not recognize it being sold in plastic bags, either.

 Yeah, that'd be weird. I postulate that if milk were black, less people would drink it.

We got milk in a bag last year in Montreal. Works pretty well, actually. You buy a re-usable pitcher to put the bag in, cut one of the corners and pour. I suppose you could pour the milk into some other container, but why would you? Good thing about the bags is that they are highly recyclable and used to make a bunch of stuff. Downside is that you can't re-close the bag, so the milk might not keep as well. About three quarters of milk sold in Ontario and Quebec is in bags. Less in the west.

I thought you were bullshitting about plastic bags of milk. They must be pretty hefty; a gallon of liquid weighs about 8 pounds. They should make a cardboard carton like those boxes of wine I see; I assume there's a plastic bag of wine inside the box. I guess the best way to get milk is like in the photo; right from the source. I would have to be pretty far into those boxes of wine to try for some virgin milk, though. And if it was black I wouldn't know it.

Nope. There are three bags per carton, and the total weight of the original carton is about 9 pounds (4 litres). Each bag is 1 and a third litres.

I'm pretty sure Canadians would rather have to take Justin Beiber back than to have to look at Pence on or off a milk carton.

... “I thought they would have changed their policy or be more accepting since they advertise themselves as a loving and accepting place that doesn’t judge anyone,” Taylor says. “I feel that I have been discriminated against for who I am and how I identify myself.”

While Taylor says he does not intend to pursue any legal action against the company, he does hope to raise awareness about the discrimination he and many others in the LGBTQ community face.

“Around the world and even in our own nation, that there are other people in the LGBTQ community that are discriminated against and get fired or denied jobs just because of how they identify themselves as and who they are as a person,” says the 18-year-old. “That's not acceptable anymore, especially in today's world — It’s honestly a violation of our basic human rights.”
Too bad he won't sue. Under Washington law discrimination based on sexual orientation for non-worship jobs is absolutely illegal.

Hendersonville Pride Day event has a big turnout

Turnout for Saturday’s Hendersonville Pride Day picnic event Saturday at Patton Park was strong.

In fact, it was more than anticipated as people packed the park grounds and pavilion picnic table areas.

“I’m amazed. We were expecting a good turnout. This is way beyond what we expected,” said Joan Saniuk of MCC Sacred Journey.

Saniuk was one of the scheduled speakers for the afternoon and she noted the event was family friendly as planned.

“I’m delighted to see so many families. We were hoping for a family friendly event, and that’s what it is,” she said.

Saniuk wasn’t the only one taken aback by the turnout.

“It far exceeds (expectations). There’s so much positive energy. Everybody’s having a good time,” said Brian Caskey, a candidate for N.C. Senate District 48.

Saniuk said she wouldn’t be surprised if there were more events like this.

“Given the turnout, this is probably only the first,” she said.

The event had generated some dispute after council members claimed they opposed Mayor Barbara Volk’s Pride Day proclamation.

“What got lost was for every person upset at the Mayor, there were three who were delighted,” Saniuk said.
Good for Hooterville.
There were no protestors seen at the Patton Park event....
Also good for Hooterville, and kinda surprising.

 It's hard to believe no protesters came; maybe things are evolving faster than most thought. I postulate if the event had been in Tryon (a bastion of high falutin' wingnuttery) there would be more protesters than supporters. But then again I suspect most of those high society horse show type folks in Tryon are just cross dressers that dabble in decadence thinking it's fashionable. Fuck them.

... FYI, the article doesn't say what any of the City Council think. If some are opposed, my note is meant to rub it in by claiming them as LGBTQ allies. :gayhappy:
From: jerrysmith@hvlnc.gov

Sorry to take so long to reply to this e-mail. Here is my response:

Thank you for your e-mail expressing your opinion regarding Mayor Volk’s Hendersonville Pride Day Proclamation at the June 6 council meeting. You are probably aware that our rules allow for the mayor to make a proclamation on any topic and for any reason. Proclamations are not the same as resolutions and do not require a vote of the City Council. After the meeting, members of the media asked my opinion on the proclamation. I told them I would have voted in FAVOR of this part of the proclamation:

WHEREAS, in June 1969, patrons of the Stonewall Inn in New York City stood up to police harassment that became commonplace for members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender ("GLBT") community; and

WHEREAS, the Hendersonville local LGBTQ community strives to create a welcoming community for all people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression; and WHEREAS, gay and transgender citizens contribute to the expression of diversity within our community. These members also work alongside us in our places of employment and contribute to the success of our economic development; and

WHEREAS, gay and transgender people donate their time, talents, and labor to community organizations and schools throughout the Hendersonville area. These members also attend our places of worship and express the same range of faith traditions as other members of our community; and

WHEREAS, we, as a City, welcome the guests and residents who will gather to celebrate and honor the fight against discrimination and prejudice towards LGBTQ individuals …. in recognition of the numerous contributions of the LGBTQ community members.

I then told the media that I was NOT in favor of designating a day “Hendersonville Pride Day”.

I work with, teach, coach and am friends with members of the LGBTQ community. I also work with, teach, coach and am friends with people who are opposed to homosexuality or altering one’s birth gender. Furthermore, there are passionate and conflicting opinions within religious communities regarding LGBTQ issues. I have no animosity towards any of these groups as all are present in and making important contributions to the City of Hendersonville. I will always oppose anyone who intimidates, threatens or harasses others because of their sexual preference, gender identity or religious beliefs.

Thank you again for expressing an opinion on this topic.

Jerry Smith
:confusion-scratchheadblue: An entire essay on why we need a Pride Day and not a single reason for "NOT (being) in favor of designating a day 'Hendersonville Pride Day'." Way cool that he sent out this canned response to all of the homophobes that wrote him, too. :gayhappy:

I never heard back from Cracker after ridiculing the notion that I'm Timm and suggesting that he google to prove it on his own. Funny that.

The guy seems to want it both ways. Reminds me of the typical response of racists years ago ("I'm not racist; I have friends who are black"). So he's not pro gay recognition ("I teach, work with, etc...") but he's not anti gay recognition either ("I teach, work with, etc..." folks who have religious objections). And don't forget; a proclamation is not the same as a resolution. The net result of his statement to me is no different from him not saying anything. His generic name suits him but he may want to consider changing it to John to make it more so. Beats me.

I have some theoretical sympathy for politicians who get speared onto a lighting rod issue that they may not have much personal interest in, and forced to "take a stand" on a yes/no basis. No middle ground is allowed, although most issues are far too complex for yes/no, and no deferring to others "on that issue while I work on (whatever)" Nope - you gotta knowingly get more or less half of your electorate to get out their thumbs in the "outrage" of the day and the only choice you get is which half you want to hate you today.

If Jerry Smith was going to side with the bigots he should have been able to articulate at least one argument that he agrees with them on. Instead, he did the opposite . . . nttawwt :D .

New acronym to me:
QTPOC - Queer, Trans, People of Color

Apparently, LGB are all "Queer", but Trans people are not. :confusion-scratchheadblue:
