Not that I really care much, but it seems that absent a judgement on QB intent, a spike could be considered an intentional grounding or possibly a fumble. The fumble could be a stretch, since the ball is driven to the ground with a forward arm motion and therefore an incomplete pass. But since there is no eligible receiver around, it is just like an intentional grounding. So allowing a spike is an exception to the rule. I'd vote for a spike getting either a yardage penalty or a 10-second runoff.

My very first post on the topic was dumb  :

• The same might be said for intentional grounding. The offense needing to stop the clock can just ground the ball, taking perhaps no more than a second off the clock for a “play.” In the course of play, intentional grounding is a tough penalty.
That's dumb. Who cares whether there's a spike or the QB takes a knee?
The clock doesn't stop when a QB takes a knee, opps. I still think the article is wrong, but for a different reason.

I think almost all spikes happen with the tight end and running back/s close enough that they would be considered 'in the vicinity' if the pass were attempted anywhere else on the field, thus it's not intentional grounding according to the rules. The alternative to a spike would be immediately and legally throwing the ball at the tight end's butt or feet, pointlessly risking injuries to all players when the outcome will be exactly the same as a spike 100% of the time.

A completely different way of dealing with it:
In Canadian football, spike plays are legal but very rare. This is mainly because a final play is always run whenever the game clock expires while the ball is dead, rendering spike plays unnecessary. Also, the offense in Canadian football only receives three downs instead of four.

    As I said, it's a pity.

That said, let me add, I usually don't like designed illegal plays that change the outcome of a game, I see it as an example of poor sportsmanship, but I did cheer with daboo when he used a pick play to beat bammer and will laugh when he goes down the same way.

At least you have 1 top 12 team on your schedule, we play 6 top 12 picks. It's going to be a tough year, but it should be more fun than being in the acc.

Bowden was tied with Bear as my 2nd favorite football coach, until he whimped out and joined the acc.

Yep, Auburn will always be known for allowing a team with a one handed player celebrate a fraudulent championship.

It's ok billy, it's not quite as bad as the Florida loss to Georgia Southern and the Gamechickens loss to the Citadel.

ESPN analyst on Clemson's Alabama blowout: 'Let’s stop with the excuses'

Excuses made by people defending Alabama after its 44-16 loss to Clemson in January reached a breaking point for one ESPN analyst on Thursday.
Former LSU defensive lineman and current Monday Night Football analyst Booger McFarland appeared on the Paul Finebaum Show and brought up what he's heard from Alabama apologists over the last few months.
"I’ve been listening to your show and I’ve kinda been a little disappointed - and here’s why. Everyone seems to say when Alabama loses, the kids aren’t focused," McFarland said. "Mack Wilson is worried about winning the Butkus (Award). These players are concerned with their individual accolades. How about saying that Clemson was the better team and (Alabama) got beat. That’s the one thing that people who call into (Finebaum’s show) don’t say.
"Sometimes there isn’t a reason or excuse and the other team is better...What about that the other team is just better? Dabo has done one hell of a job. And I was at the game, Paul, Clemson lined up and beat Alabama. It wasn’t a fluke. Tua (Tagovailoa) wasn’t sick and didn’t have the flu.
"(Clemson) just lined up and beat Alabama and hit them square in the mouth and beat them. And I think that’s the thing that if you ask him, Nick Saban, he’ll tell you (that)...Let’s stop with the excuses. Alabama got beat by a better team that’s called the Clemson Tigers.”

Be thankful Auburn's QB Jarrett Stidham didn't comment that he was glad to have the opportunity to feel a loss to a UCF one hand player.

interesting pic. Auburn got a 15 yard penalty for doing exactly that.
