my dogs likes their people

and my home cooking (they don't eat that store bought stuff)

if you have a good stand mixer

pour 2 lbs chicken livers, some sorghum molasses, 1/2 cup oil or lard, some chicken bouillon about 5 cups AP whole wheat flour, and 5 cups plain cornmeal (not self -rising) into the mixer and mix on low until fully mixed and consistent to roll out on a floured surface.
more liquid or more meal until it's just right for rolling.

roll to about 1/3 to 1/2 inch thick, cut to fix into about 2 and 1/2 sheet pans, cut into 1 in squares with a wheel type pizza cutter and bake at around 275 to 325. I let them cook for 30 min, turn the oven off for 30 min then back on 2 or 3 times until the moisture is evaporated and you have a good hard tack

Thanks for the recipe. I make treats out of flour and milk and bake it basically the same way.

put some stuff in it

chicken
liver
burger
the fat off the ham

just whatever

the cornmeal makes then a little crunchier

the favorite is liver - any kind of liver. you don't even have to run it through the blender. the stand mixer will completely mix it with the flour/cornmeal

I always cooked most of what my dogs eat, but stopped using any store bought a few years back when they were using melamine to boost the protein test

cool side note
home cooked doesn't have the preservatives that prevent their shit from breaking down (or poisoning the worms or whatever it does) - it is long gone within 3 days

keep cooking - just remember, dogs are like kids and just as easy to feed - just concentrate on variety

Not sure that was mama's intent.....
We do a mix of homemade and bought. Not sure what kind of kibble the hubs is buying now, but he's very particular.
Our dogs looooved those chicken jerky strips. Once we found out about dogs dying from the least expensive (not cheap) brand, he started buying Made in the USA jerky. Funny thing that - the price increased three-fold. Now he makes his own. It still comes out less expensive, even using boneless breasts!

As for Thanksgiving, that whole company thing reminds me how fortunate I am that I have to work holidays.

you're getting it k9nanny

the jerky strips that were killing dogs was mostly due to people over feeding the dehydrated products.

those of you with farm or meat processing backgrounds know that it is the trash, the infested, the bones, the organs, the chicken's beak along with the little hangie down thing, the whatever people won't eat that goes into even the best dog food

and they know that habits are hard to break, so they charge more for the garbage than for the food

my dog food recipe has developed over the years - mostly I look for variety but the base is usually chicken. easy enough to find chickens for $.99/lb - I cut out the wings with a big hunk of back and breast meat attached and cut out the breasts - if you account for the breast and wings at market price - the rest of the chicken is almost free

and as k9nanny said, even the breast meat is cheaper than the chicken jerky on the dog food isle

one more - the beef jerky on the jerky isle is cheaper than the rotten spoiler putrid chicken that was used for jerky on the dog food isle - note the warning on the package - wash hands thoroughly are handling

and finally - look for snacks where people get snacks - no sugar and crap but vienna sausages are cheaper than pupp-eronies

they love hot dogs, again cheaper than the crap on the dog food isle

and it has all been inspected and is considered fit for human consumption

note

dogs have done well for the past 14,000 years eating with us and as we do

it has only been about 150 years now since some dude intercepted some rotten hard tack headed for the garbage during the unloading of a british ship that started us feeding our dogs our garbage.

I see people buying those 25 and 50 lb bags and leaving them in the garage - not even the palmetto bugs will eat that shit
and the dog shit sitting just as it was laid in backyards all over the country for month after month is one of the biggest clues that the stuff is pumped full of preservatives and not fit for consumption

my yard stays clean and I have one large and one small dog and a pretty small rear yard

We have three dogs, 8,10 & 15 pounds. My wife makes "mutt loaf" with boneless chicken and a number of other good ingredients. She then mixes it with Royal Canin dry. They are all very healthy. The vet says this is a good mixture.

No thanksgiving leftovers for our cat. Aside from his dried catfood, he will only eat shrimp. Not catfood shrimp. Not canned human food shrimp. Not frozen shrimp. Only fresh caught, peeled, deveined, cooked (preferably etoufee) shrimp. The little guy is so well fed, I need to keep him away from Homerphobe

what no lizards and squirrels? that and fresh yellowfin are my cats favorites - he catches the lizards and squirrels - I try to catch the tuna but mostly it comes fro joe patti's

and I bet ya a nickle you don't have to de-vein the shrimp, fresh caught with heads and shells will do fine

My cat likes tuna, preferably the sashimi tuna that we eat, but also the grilled tuna catfood version. I think you are right about the shrimp. My cat was declawed, front and back by previous owners, and is a afraid to go outside much, despite his ancestry (asian leopard cat), hence no lizards or squirrels.
