Nothing in the coverage of that demonstration of stupidity and recklessness says that the people on the boat were Floridians or that they didn't understand drawbridges or "No Trespassing" signs. More likely, they were spring breakers in a rented party boat who just didn't give a crap about no stinkin' signsd as long as the beer was cold. Not that there aren't some Floridians who do stupid things - they've earned the "Florida Man" meme. But concluding that these particular people were in fact Floridians and didn't understand... was just standard provincialism.

Very well.

It may just be a matter of, "What happens in Florida, stays in Florida..." eh?

The Florida man thing came out of the Floriduh thing which came from the bush campaign as part of their efforts to overturn the Florida election.

Not entirely. Science has documented that the average visitor loses 30 IQ points as soon as they cross the border into Florida ;) . Not being average, the loss is greater for Spring breakers.

Back in the mid-80's, Florida had a marketing tag at the end of tourism ads that said "Florida - the rules are different here." I don't think what they had in mind is what's there now.

It is a well deseved moniker and a great example of what happens when republicans take over a state. Jeb, Rick and now Ron, along with a solid republican legislature have taken a toll.

Still, I always find it a bit unsettling when liberals start using terms designed by republican wordsmiths to taint things for political gain. There's plenty of polling that shows the different acceptance rates between the aca and obamacare, yet the very people behind and in favor of the aca fell into calling it obamacare - including Obama. All who supported the aca should have refused to call it anything else and should even have refused to acknowledge the word "obamacare". There's little sense it letting a word cause so much political damage.

Floriduh is a little different, as I said, it's deserved, but it still brings up in me memories of when and why it was first used in the 200 election to mock the election officials holding punch cards up to look for legitimate pregnant and hanging chads.
Florida man came naturally afterwards. Before 2000, we had more heroic tales of Florida men like the mostly fictional Clinton Tyree, a.k.a. Skink. There was a hero.

This claims that the Florida Man meme didn't begin until 2013, but -0-? .

I would have guessed earlier, but never associated it with the 2000 election. I haven't seen it in political terms at all, but if pressed am more likely to picture cons as being Florida Men.

The duh, floriduh came out of the election. It's my personal guess that Floriduh set the stage for Florida man.

In theory, "Florida Man" could just as easily have been "California Man" or "Montana Man" because so man news accounts start with something like that. Picked randomly from an open tab, "A Texas man is under arrest weeks after a woman was found dead in her garage by her ex-husband and children."

But it seems like, whether by intent or number of events, that "Florida Man" appears more frequently and with greater weirdness. Maybe because many of the stories involve beer and/or alligators. Maybe because they haven't learned that no story ends well if it starts out "we wuz all sittin' around drinkin' one night..."

That's more my part of Florida. The S.Florida ones are more, he was naked and painted all these colors, or we didn't know it would do that

FL is where that guy who was flipped out on bath salts or something ate somebody's face a few years ago. He probably thought that particular face was one of those chimichutzpahs.

Example from Lee County
A Florida man is accused of jumping on a neighbor’s trampoline while naked and later breaking into her home while still unclothed, authorities said.

Adrian Lee Gonzalez-Bradway, 21, was arrested Wednesday and charged with burglary and criminal mischief with property damage of more than $200, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office’s online booking records.

 What makes this extra Florida is that someone witnessed him jumping on the trampoline while naked and didn't think it strange enough to call the cops before he broke into the home naked.

Since a lot of the "Florida Man" stories involve somebody doing something stupid that would have clearly been seen as stupid by any bystander, it seems reasonable that DeSantis gets recognized for his astounding stupidity in taking on Disney. Consider:
Disney has pretty much unlimited money and a stable of about 400 lawyers, most of them flinty-eyed litigators. They sue and are sued all the time.
Disney is and has been an economic golden goose for Florida, and has contributed to a lot of politicians, many if not most of those Repugs.
If Disney ran out of money or lawyers, it is owned by ABC.
The Reedy Creek "self-governing" district has been pretty much universally considered good for the company, the counties, and the state.
DeSantis is wrong in law and fact on (at least) two main points: (1) free speech/retaliation violation; and (2) process - although the legislature has the authority to establish and de-establish self-governing districts, they have to be de-established in the same manner they're established. That means hearings, review boards, environmental impacts, yada, none of which was done with DeSantis' legislative bill. (3) DeSantis or somebody on his behalf, has said/implied that Disney might not lose its status next year if they support or at least shut up about the "Don't say Gay" law. Extortion by any definition

DeSantis is going down on this one, and will be totally trashed in the process. Unfortunately, it probably won't happen until after he's re-elected.

The thing that I'm not quite wrapping my head around also is "free speech" is also soft money. Disney can just bury DeSantis in spending if they choose.

Aside from this bigoted retaliation I might have supported in principle the idea of removing favored status from Disney or any other corp.

If I've heard right this move means that Disney will escape $1B in debt that will now be foisted off on state and local govt. Opps.

It's also over a year until it's implemented, six months after the election.

Plenty of time for the pols to back off or be bought off.

We'll see.

The really strange thing is that the whole ado is over a nonexistent issue. No one is trying to turn anyone gay or trans. Otoh, if the law is applied literally then no reference or implication can be made as to Mickey and Minnie, any prince and princess or any traditional family as being hetero. That's sexuality, too. Lotta very longstanding books and lesson plans will be challenged.

The RWNJ'S are boycotting and picketing Disney for supporting pedophilia and that's the strange thing?
