Well put, but there is a flaw in the logic. Wearing that "inconvenient" mask and getting the vaccine would actually and unquestionably be in their own best interest. A person interested in only me, me, me would cheat to be at the first of the vaccine line.

Succinct and correct.

I still remember a philosophy class from years ago. Many people see freedom as exclusively 'freedom from' things. They don't consider 'freedom to'. For example, an education gives one the freedom to contribute more to society.

To be fair, it only mentions facemasks, not vaccines, and unless one is spending the money on N95s or better the purpose of the mask is more to protect others than oneself.

Queen’s Brian May Calls Anti-Vaxxers, Including Eric Clapton, ‘Fruitcakes’

Brian May is hetero, but it's still kinda funny to be called "fruitcakes" by one of Queen's founders.

Fwiw:
Brian Harold May CBE (born 19 July 1947) is an English musician, singer, songwriter, record producer, author, astrophysicist, and university administrator. He is the lead guitarist of the rock band Queen....
Eric Clapton and Van Morrison don't have any science degrees. It shows.

Mississippi's governor says people in the state are less scared of COVID-19 because they 'believe in eternal life'

What a coincidence! I'm less scared of COVID-19 because it helps Mississippi RepuQs achieve "eternal life" sooner.
Isn’t it ironic? Law touted by DeSantis backfired on his defense in mask mandate case | Editorial

Oh, the irony of it all.

When Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a July executive order to block school mask mandates, he cited a law called the Parents’ Bill of Rights as the foundation for his position that parents, not schools, should decide whether children must wear facial coverings. His legal team also used the law passed this year in the defense against a lawsuit by parents challenging the executive order.

It appears the DeSantis team read — or chose to mention — only a portion of the law he signed in July.

Leon County Circuit Judge John C. Cooper ruled Friday that the governor doesn’t have the authority to ban mask mandates. He acknowledged that the Parents’ Bill of Rights does say that government entities “may not infringe on the fundamental rights of a parent to direct the upbringing, education, health care, and mental health of” their child.

But, as Cooper said, “that’s where the reading [of the law] has been stopped by the defendants in this case.”

He pointed out that there’s another part of the Parents’ Bill of Rights that makes an exception when a requirement “is reasonable and necessary to achieve a compelling state interest and that such action is narrowly tailored and is not otherwise served by a less restrictive means.”

In other words, the Miami-Dade School Board and nine other districts across the state might have the authority to impose mask mandates if doing so is “reasonable” and necessary for “a compelling state interest.” We believe this situation meets that threshold, considering the highly-contagious delta variant has fueled the worse surge of COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in Florida since the beginning of the pandemic.
Govidiot DeSantis is being advised by Lawidiots.
We don’t believe DeSantis or his aides forgot to read the entire Parents’ Bill of Rights or at least the one paragraph that makes up the section in question.

But in DeSantis’ relentless fight against local rule, it’s clear he’s willing to spin even a bill that he supported. While Floridians are dying, he complains about mask requirements instead of dedicating that energy toward getting more people vaccinated.
Govidiot DeSantis is a lying sack of homicidal shit.
... DeSantis has deployed his own cabal of experts and studies to discredit the effectiveness of masks. But Cooper appears to have seen right through that strategy.

DeSantis relied on a study by Brown University that his executive order states “analyzed COVID-19 data for schools in Florida and found no correlation with mask mandates” and COVID cases.

Again, it appears the governor and his team didn’t fully read the data he has touted.

As the Tampa Bay Times reported, the Brown University study itself points out the limitations of its methods. The authors looked only at whether mandates existed at particular schools, and not the masking behavior of students and staffers, and they didn’t account for mitigation measures that might have been in place in the surrounding community, which would influence case counts.

The study authors in the end actually undermined DeSantis’ executive order, saying that “in-person school can be operated safely with appropriate mitigation, which typically includes universal masking.”
Govidiot DeSantis is being advised by lying Researchidiots.
... Of course, that won’t deter DeSantis from his crusade against public health. Even before the Friday ruling, he had vowed to appeal if the decision went against him, Florida Politics reported.

DeSantis may have too much hubris to back down from this fight, but true leaders recognize when they have made a mistake. We know this is a vain hope, but — for the good of the state — we wish the governor would finally put children first and bow to common sense.
Govidiot DeSantis is a homicidal masochist.

At the first hint of worldwide pandemic, I bought a bunch of N-95's and N-95's just before they became scarce. We've worn nothing else since. My thoughts are: If you've gotta a wear a mask anyway, wear a good one; If you keep yourself and your family from getting it, you don't have to worry about spreading it; Nobody ever gets killed because their safety equipment is too good.

True, but I'm not sure that N95's are really necessary to prevent infection, provided one social distances and wears at least a surgical mask. The surgical masks are good at preventing respired droplets from being both transmitted by the infected one and inhaled by the targeted recipient. All I've generally worn have been surgical masks, and all my covid tests (five and counting) have come up negative. I also got vaccinated (Pf) as soon as I could. Of course I live in a relatively compliant area, where it is extremely rare to see anyone in an enclosed public or commercial area not wearing a mask.

I have never worn a cloth mask as an alternative to a surgical mask.

I have found also that KN95 and N95 masks I've found cause my glasses to fog up to the point where I have to remove them to see.

Occasionally I shop at a business supply outfit. They have had KN95 and N95 masks out on the floor from time to time. What I've been noticing is that if one isn't quick to snag some, within an hour someone will come along and take the entire lot. Apparently money is to be made there.

YMMV

Yeah, given the distancing habits we picked up, we probably didn't need masks at all. We knew it wasn't realistic, but for the purpose of assuring protection for ourselves we envisioned a game that every person we saw was a covid zombie eager to eat our brains and that every surface touched was rank with covid germs. Knowing it was unreasonable, we'd even put up the window at a stop light if the car next to us had theirs down. We were diligent, and, although we no longer play such an extreme game, remain diligent even after vaccinations. We'll be eligible for the booster in late September/October and we'll be there when they open. As for wearing the 95's - I figure one might, in an unexpected rain shower, be willing to schlog through a rain puddle in their regular shoes. But if that puddle might be liquid pig shit spiked with sulfuric acid, you're gonna want some industrial strength galoshes.

CV-19 is aerosolized, not just droplets. Hence, plain surgical or cloth masks are NOT very good at preventing the virus from being inhaled by a masked recipient. Also, indoor social distancing is less important than the amount of virus within a given space. That's why one unvaccinated, symptomatic teacher can infect most of a class when s/he removes a mask to read stories.

Rand Paul claims scientists won't study horse deworming drug ivermectin's use as a potential COVID cure because of their 'hatred for Trump'

... "The hatred for Trump deranged these people so much that they're unwilling to objectively study it," Paul said, per the Cincinnati Enquirer. "So someone like me that's in the middle on it, I can't tell you because they will not study ivermectin. They will not study hydroxychloroquine without the taint of their hatred for Donald Trump."
Must be a global conspiracy of scientists, none of whom would want the professional acclaim that would come with proving ivermectin effective and safe or not.
... Trump has not pushed ivermectin ...
Yep, Rand Paul is a :crybaby: moron.
... The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also released a health advisory last week, cautioning that people could become severely ill from self-medicating with ivermectin because an overdose can cause a coma, seizures, and death. Even the milder side effects of taking too much ivermectin are extremely unpleasant, per the FDA, and include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, low blood pressure, dizziness, and other allergic reactions.

Nonetheless, people continue to take ivermectin. The CDC's numbers show that from early July this year until the week ending August 13, pharmacies filled more than 88,000 prescriptions of Ivermectin.

Separately, clinical studies have also shown that hydroxychloroquine, an anti-malarial drug, does not help treat or prevent COVID-19. The FDA cautioned against using hydroxychloroquine after finding that the drug could cause serious heart problems, blood and lymph node disorders, kidney injuries, and liver problems, including liver failure.

Conservative Radio Host Battling COVID Needs to Fly to Hospital With Oxygen Machine: Brother

... Last week, family members said that Valentine, who had spread COVID misinformation and mocked vaccines on his radio show, regretted not being a vaccine advocate and was battling COVID pneumonia, but he had not been placed on a ventilator. That decision was revised earlier this week when Valentine’s already severe condition continued to deteriorate.
Karma.
Another conservative anti-vaccine radio talk show host succumbs to COVID, third in a month

... Marc Bernier died Saturday of COVID-19 after a three-week battle, his bereft radio station announced....

Bernier had been afflicted three weeks earlier after hosting radio talk shows in Daytona Beach for 30 years, and after dubbing himself “Mr. Anti-Vax.” He also said the U.S. government was “acting like Nazis” for insisting people get the shot....

He was preceded eight days earlier by Phil Valentine, a 61-year-old conservative talk radio host in Tennessee who mocked coronavirus vaccines but changed his tone after getting sick. He battled the disease for a month.

Also having a change of heart, before his stopped, was Dick Farrel, a former Newsmax commentator and all-around coronavirus-denying, vaccine-resistant right-wing radio talk show host. The South Florida radio host died of COVID-19 complications on Aug. 6, at age 65, after exhorting fans not to get the vaccine, calling the entire coronavirus crisis a “scam-demic.”

Both Farrel and Valentine urged friends and followers to get the vaccine as the disease closed in on them and said they regretted not doing it themselves....

“Are you kidding me? Mr. Anti-Vax? Jeepers,” Bernier said in answer to the question of whether he would take the shot. “I’m not taking it.”
Idk if anything can get through to the COVIDiots, but I suspect that these deaths are more effective than last minute conversions to being pro-vax. If so, I thank these 3 conservative radio talk show hosts for their service.
