No, it would take additional laws to allow collection. There is no comparable history, because nobody else has a Second Amendment equivalent. How would you go about hypothesizing that "right panel" of justices? Tell us who's likely to be retiring, who's getting replaced, and who will be doing the replacing. And they could re-interpret it to go back to what it was before Heller, but they couldn't void it. And of course there's more than just the Second. That's the point. There's decades of gun culture, a majority of all elected officials owned by the NRA. I'm saying there is zero chance of anybody ever in several lifetimes trying to "take away our guns." Nogonnahappen. And it's not because of yahoos posturing with "cold dead fingers" crap.Mad American wrote:
It would take nothing to collect all registered firearms once the locations were known. To think otherwise is historically inaccurate and naive. All it would take is the right panel of justices to be selected to the Supreme Court and the 2nd Amendment as we know it could cease to exist. Point being there is more than just the second amendment preventing civilian disarmament.

Agreed. However, it was you who said "I have no problem discussion theoretical possibilities even if I know they have no chance of becoming real." Just went down the theoretical path with you.O Really wrote:No, it would take additional laws to allow collection. I just wish most of your fellow NRA members and the idiots making runs on gun and ammo stores knew it was theoretical.

Edgar: You can have my gun, when you pry it from my cold dead fingers.
Bug: Your proposal is acceptable.

For the "cold dead fangers" crowd, I offer consideration of Ruby Ridge and Waco. ATF will gladly make it so.

And both of those incidents came before SWAT teams REALLY started to armor themselves, often even with armored vehicles.
Plus a whole lot of troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan - with the ultimate training and experience in urban warfare against insurgents with guns and more - are showing up in police forces and SWAT teams.

Here's an idea - since many of our gun umm, "enthusiasts" object to the term "assault rifle" for firearms like the AR-15, I think we should start generically referring to them as "child killers" or maybe a "Newtown model" rifle. That's accurate and true, isn't it?

Who knows, maybe they'll even invent a San Francisco model.O Really wrote:Here's an idea - since many of our gun umm, "enthusiasts" object to the term "assault rifle" for firearms like the AR-15, I think we should start generically referring to them as "child killers" or maybe a "Newtown model" rifle. Clever, but way over the head of the average NRA member. But I don't think there's any chance of a legislative solution in three lifetimes, but social engineering (unintentional and intentional) can make a difference. Remember when song lyrics about "one more for the road" didn't raise a ripple? Imagine some main stream singer having lyrics now about drinking and driving. Remember when the majority of adults smoked, and cigarettes were in machines open to anyone of most any age? Well, cigarettes are still legal, aren't they? But smokers are down to 20% and get parked like pariahs in the corner of parking lots. If that type/style of gun got solidly associated with mass killings, it's gonna be a lot more of a stigma to own one. Sure, the "dead fangers" people will still have them, but they'll be the outcasts, not the mainstream.Vrede wrote:How about "compensations"?O Really wrote:Here's an idea - since many of our gun umm, "enthusiasts" object to the term "assault rifle" for firearms like the AR-15, I think we should start generically referring to them as "child killers" or maybe a "Newtown model" rifle.
