WNC Democrats rally at DNC finale watch party; local leaders report rise in volunteering

On Thursday, Aug. 22, the 2024 Democratic National Convention wrapped up in Chicago.

Dozens of local supporters gathered for a watch party at the new Harris-Walz coordinated campaign field office of Henderson County.

"Dozens"? "field office of Henderson County"? Damn, they must have some money.

... Local Democratic leaders say the support seen on this night is part of a larger trend.

Caleb Rudow, the representative for North Carolina's 116th District, says the party has seen an increase in volunteer activity following Kamala Harris's arrival at the top of the ticket....

There were over 300 events hosted by the North Carolina coordinated campaigns across the state this week. They included new office openings, canvas launches, phone banks and volunteer training.

"300 events"? Wow, lots of money.

MSNBC just now: "Harris may be slightly ahead in NC."

North Carolina emerges as battleground state in the presidential race

... Eric Heberlig, a political science professor at UNC Charlotte, said few states are going to be competitive, and North Carolina is one of them. He said that we've already seen proof of that with Vice President Kamala Harris and Former President Donald Trump making multiple campaign stops in The Tar Heel State.

Heberlig said North Carolina is critical for Republicans because their chances of getting to 270 electoral college votes without winning here are slim.

"The Democrats can get to 270 without North Carolina as Joe Biden did in 2020, but certainly having North Carolina would give them more flexibility," he explained....

State Sen. Julie Mayfield is serving as a delegate and described the convention has an electric atmosphere. She expressed excitement over Gov. Roy Cooper being given a primary speaking slot.

"Introducing Kamala Harris so -- that's a huge honor for Governor Cooper, and a huge honor for North Carolina," she expressed.

She said that North Carolina is truly the center of this election.

"The math says that Donald Trump cannot win the White House unless he wins North Carolina," she said....

Not much need in Illinois, especially in Highland Park. If I do any volunteering it will be to canvas in Wisconsin.

That Hendersonville DNC office has existed forever. It used to be on Greenville Highway, but it probably just isn't used to actual publicity (especially if you weren't aware of it ).

Another thought: A Kamala win will be bittersweet for Hillary. I suspect and hope more sweet than bitter, especially with beating campaign finance felon TRE45QN. I hope she and Bill live long enough, maybe even long enough for a reelection.

It's different if you're really in charge from when you can pretend to be. I say if I were in charge, I'd have called up nuttyahoo and said something like "Netty, you remember all those weapons and money we've been sending you? Want some more? Stop the attacks. Stop them now - this afternoon. Claim your "victory" and walk away. AFTER you've done that, we'll talk about more goodies."

However, it's a far more complex issue that I can pretend to make it, and potential for lots of unexpected and unwanted consequences. I would have been happy to hear some of the speakers call for "increased pressure" on Israel, to express disapproval of what they're doing, etc., but I don't think it would have benefitted Kamala's election (which is what the convention is about) to let a bomb-throwing loose cannon be a speaker.

It wouldn't have to be a "bomb-throwing loose cannon". After all, AOC supports an arms embargo, but some deal was cut to preclude her saying so. Differing opinions can be expressed respectfully, and I'm not sure that suppressing that perspective benefits Kamala's election. Michigan may be the price. How many more atrocities has Israel now been given free rein to commit?
