Social Distancing 1A

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

So here's another one for you: Most national parks are still open, in the sense that they aren't locked up, but all the facilities - visitor centers, etc. - are closed. And they're letting people in for free. Creating another conundrum in that a hard closing on some of these places is pretty difficult to impossible, yet letting people in unsupervised - and free to boot - is almost sure to generate the type of damage that happened during the government "shutdown" last year. As well as attracting more people and thus generating more crowds. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. And not to mention the problems caused by large infusions of out of towners to small places without much resources - eating up all the groceries, using up medical services with injuries, yada.

Somebody said, I think originally regarding Clearwater Beach, "Your grandfathers and fathers were asked to go to war - you're only asked to stay home."

... I'm not sure I exactly understand the value of the testing to the individual, although I understand the value to the public health people. It's not as though they have an actual treatment yet. Would it not work just to say "if you have any of the symptoms associated with cold or flu, whether you think it's 'only a cold' or not, isolate yourself until you either get better or worse. If badly worse, call for medical help/instructions..."
Some GUESSES:

Close contacts can be warned, lest they get ill, particularly vulnerable people;
Better able to continue work, etc. in the short term if known negative;
More likely to seek help sooner for worsening symptoms. Though there is no cure, there are supportive treatments;
Certainty, + or -, helps with anxiety;
Good to know that one is immune after recovery;
One can go visit Repugs, insurance reps, gunhuggers, etc. :twisted:

That said, I'm not going for testing unless I'm so ill that I seek in person help and they want to test me.

Unlike the government shutdown, are rangers still patrolling and thus preventing some of the worst things from happening?

Idk, some tourism dependent places are suffering and MIGHT appreciate the business. Most have resources far in excess of their needs without the tourists.

The logic of that may not be so clear to some married people ;) .

That's what we had in mind. But we're also taking out distancing seriously and not doing anything that gets us close to other people. I figure that even if the Governor's guesstimate of "eventually 53%" of people get infected, that means almost half won't and we might as well be among those who don't.

It's good to see places like pharmacies doing their part, too. We went to the drive-in at Walgreen's to pick up a prescription renewal and noticed that the window person was wearing gloves and wiping the tray between each customer.

Some may, but it looks like a lot of places like Moab and Leavenworth have put out the "Go Away" signs. The risk (real or perceived) of excess contamination seems to outweigh the tourist dollars, especially since so much stuff has to be closed. Imagine having a restaurant or bar in Moab that you can't open and meanwhile climbers and bikers and park visitors are crowding up the town. Or going to the grocery that's clogged with tourists from who knows where having mingled with who knows what.

Are you working and if so, how worried are you and others in field?

I considered coming out of retirement to do my part in the crisis, then realized that I'm in the risk group, maybe not quite "high risk". Opps.

No special insight other than what we're all seeing on TV, though I can make some educated guesses. Before long it will beyond anything I've ever seen.

Over a year now with any tv news, but plenty online. These are new times for all, except for the all knowing pos trump.

So this morning I went to Albertson's and CVS for provisions. Not much crowd, probably average or slightly less Sunday morning shoppers. Paper supplies were still low, but they had re-stocked. Produce was low. But they had gone to some effort to encourage distancing. Closed alternate check-out lanes and half the self-check lanes. Put up a higher barrier between check-outs - sure, it's stuff they want you to impulse-buy, but still. Had tape marking on the floor to mark where to stand on line. Checkers with gloves. CVS had tables set up several feet in front of the check-out counter with the card-swipe on it so you couldn't get too close to the checker - they also had taped off line control. Bought gas at $2.53!

I've got mixed opinion on the "senior hours." It's a good gesture, and supposedly it gives senior first go at a cleaner re-stocked store, but I wonder if it's really better to go when the store has a bunch of people in the "most vulnerable" category. If it's "most vulnerable" meaning that IF they catch it, it will likely be worse, then going during senior hours would be OK, but if it's "most vulnerable" meaning that they're more LIKELY to catch it, then I probably don't want to be around virus magnets. So far, I haven't had to fight crowds in our local stores, so my limited shopping with distancing has gone well.

Not sure, but I think it's "IF they catch it, it will likely be worse," not "more LIKELY to catch it". The former is now coming into some question. I heard, "40% of those hospitalized are 20-54." Can't remember if that was the US or world. To the extent that "IF they catch it, it will likely be worse" is true, segregation makes sense. Seniors are more likely to have symptoms and not be in the stores.

My sister hit Trader Joe's yesterday for senior hours. She said it was a zoo, too many slow moving seniors. She said no mas.

Went to geezer time at Albertson's today. Not crowded, mostly geezers there, who mostly did their part to keep distance. Shelves missing some things in some departments, but I got everything I went after. Still not much paper products and interestingly, the pasta area was ravaged. Lot of pasta getting eaten I guess - maybe by people who don't normally cook much at home. Meats and most fresh veggies were in good supply.
