Guns, race, religion, terror, wingnut thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Criminal law is supposed to be punitive, not preventative. To the extent it does manage to prevent some crimes, that's an added benefit.

Some dubmass in the Texas state legislature has introduced a bill that would make abortion illegal, a felony both for the doctor and the patient, that carries a maximum penalty of death. no shit.
I agree, two wrongs don't make a right. Hopefully, the last part of that bill will not pass.
Hopefully none of it will pass, as laws do almost nothing to prevent abortion.
When you get right down to it, laws do almost nothing to prevent anything; people still get murdered, defrauded, and assaulted, all of which there are laws against.
Then, if this law is passed, the doctors & patients have nothing to be concerned about.

Yes, very much so. It could be nothing else but punitive; it's the only reason for its existence. All I am saying is that the existence of laws will never be the reason someone overpowered by emotion breaks the law; the emotional trigger for the crime is more powerful than the statute; that's all. It happens every day.

Driver who struck pedestrians in California thought victims were Muslim, police say
Suspect Isaiah Joel Peoples "intentionally targeted the victims based on their race and his belief that they were of the Muslim Faith," police said.

Odds are pretty good that he's Christian.

      Edit:

... Peoples was on his way to a Bible class Tuesday in the Silicon Valley suburb of Sunnyvale when he told investigators he intentionally drove into a group of men, women and children, police said....

Peoples showed no remorse after his car plowed at high speed into a group of people in a crosswalk before hitting a tree, Ngo said.

Witness Don Draper said he marched over to Peoples' car after he crashed, and he found the driver muttering over and over, "Thank you, Jesus. Thank you, Jesus." ...

One dead, three injured in Poway synagogue shooting

A woman was killed and three others injured Saturday when a 19-year-old man armed with a rifle opened fire during Passover services at the Chabad of Poway.

Authorities identified the suspected gunman as John T. Earnest, a Rancho Penasquitos resident. He was arrested and is being questioned by homicide detectives.

Poway Mayor Steve Vaus called it a “hate crime,” based on statements the shooter was heard making as he entered the synagogue. Authorities were reviewing his social media accounts and an anti-Semitic “open letter” he reportedly wrote before the attack ...
Added to my list, something I'm doing frequently these days.

      Donald Trump's latest tweets!
Sincerest THANK YOU to our great Border Patrol Agent who stopped the shooter at the Synagogue in Poway, California. He may have been off duty but his talents for Law Enforcement weren’t!
      Maybe fake news.
... At an early afternoon press conference, authorities said an off-duty Border Patrol agent was driving by the synagogue and opened fire on the fleeing suspect....
Kudos to the agent, but it sounds like Earnest had already completed his attack.

Yep, his gun jammed and the Border Patrol Agent fire at the fleeing car.

In case there's any doubt about the Poway terrorist:

Always take these with a grain of salt. The FBI entraps people, mostly Muslims, that never would have really become terrorists.

          Very Fine News:
Some Very Fine People Pleaded Guilty To Inciting Violent Riots In Charlottesville
Four white supremacists admitted that they violently assaulted counterprotesters during the 2017 "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in order to fuel riots.

At least four white supremacists who were at the August 2017 "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, have admitted that they attended the rally only to incite violence that would lead to riots, according to the Department of Justice.

Four members of a now-defunct California-based white supremacist group called Rise Above Movement have pleaded guilty to federal rioting charges in connection with the rally that sparked violence in the city on Aug. 11 and 12, 2017.

Two RAM members — Benjamin Drake Daley, 26, and Michael Paul Miselis, 30 — pleaded guilty on Friday to one count of conspiracy to riot in Charlottesville and in other political rallies in California. Two other RAM members, Cole White, 24, and Thomas Gillen, 25, have previously pleaded guilty to the same charge.

These white supremacists “trained to engage in violent confrontations and attended the Unite the Right Rally with the expectation of provoking physical conflict with counter-protestors that would lead to riots,” the FBI said on Friday.

President Trump has twice defended those who marched in Charlottesville with tiki torches and chanted “Blood and soil!” and “Jews will not replace us!” and later engaged in violent confrontations during the Unite the Right rally, leading to the death of a counterprotester, Heather Heyer, at the hands of a neo-Nazi.

Shortly after the deadly rally, Trump said there were “very fine people on both sides” of the incident.

Just last month, Trump once again defended the Charlottesville rally, which was organized by white supremacists, saying, “People were there protesting the taking down of the monument of [Confederate Army commander] Robert E. Lee — everybody knows that.” Trump added that Lee was “one of the great generals.” ...

          Paki (slur)

"Paki" is a racial slur typically used towards people of Pakistani descent, and often indiscriminately directed towards people of perceived South Asian descent. The slur is used by mainly certain Europeans to refer to Pakistanis, Afghans, Indians, Bangladeshis, or anyone resembling Pakistani descent. Middle easterners have also been targeted more so after mass migration from certain countries. The slur is used chiefly in the United Kingdom and is also considered pejorative in Canada.

In the United Kingdom and Canada, the term "Paki" is commonly associated with "Paki-bashing", violent attacks against people of South Asian origin, chiefly Pakistanis.
I did not know that it's a slur, or at least not a serious one. I thought it was just shorthand.
