Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Has s/he said "retired"? The exchange above sounds like s/he is claiming to still be active.
I don't know - I had missed the part where he said he was a SC cop.

That claim just came to light further up on page 170. Thanks to her/his poor composition I had thought s/he was in AZ. S/he had also said in "law enforcement" before, but I figured that meant PD janitor, nttawwt, until seeing this claim to be a nonexistent "open carry" card armed LEO. Of course, there are tons of her/his posts that I've never seen.

Maybe s/he only gets one bullet like Barney Fife.

But if, hypothetically, we had a person who had retired from South Carolina law enforcement, what might we surmise about such a hypothetical person? ...

You forgot the hypothetical donuts
South Carolina is where those fired and disgraced cops go to get the new LEO jobs that billy.pilgrim talks about.

Aside: I detest the fascist SLED commercials, never an appeal to good citizenship (litter), or to safety (seat belts), just harshly delivered threats of dire legal consequences. They make me want to violate the law in question. I've told them so, but got no response.

For the past few days the Wal Mart grocery store near where I live had has at least one, and sometimes two or three cop cars sitting outside with no cops in them. I go there to buy beer and food and the apple pies and bread they make there. Also sometimes meet my drug dealer and estranged lover out back in the delivery area. Anyway, I never see any cops in the store. It makes me wonder if they're part of the deep state and went under. Signed, just wondering.

Most of the time it's pretty good; sometimes it's better than that. I have no valid medical reason for getting marijuana but I recommend it for anyone who wants to relax now and then, maintain a good appetite, and get plenty of rest. I would never lie and say I had a medical reason to use pot; I use it for the past 50 years just because I like it.

Well, I guess those boys should have stayed in Charlotte. When I first entered the war on drugs, pot could be bought for about $180 per pound. A friend of mine bought a 69 Z28 for $1800 and a pound of pot....what you might call $2,000 back when the battle lines were being drawn.

Gee, prohibition is working soooo well. It's really just welfare for LEOs and, indirectly, for dealers.

Response from Senator Tillis

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts regarding gun control. I appreciate hearing from you.

Anytime a life is taken is tragic. I believe we must first address the underlying causes of these tragedies by providing much needed metal health resources to local law enforcement and communities. Saving lives will require a combination of proactive, commonsense initiatives on the part of communities and federal, state, and local governments.

I co-sponsored a bill to ensure state and federal authorities are reporting accurate information to the National Instant Background Checks System (NICS). Reporting requirements and relevant background check software must be up-to-date and reliable. By bolstering communication and coordination between relevant health and safety agencies, we can both help ensure that firearms do not fall into the wrong hands and protect the Constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens. That is why I was glad see S. 2135, the Fix NICS Act, which I co-sponsored, signed into law by President Trump. This bill will hold federal agencies accountable for failing to report relevant records and incentivizing states to improve their reporting practices.

In addition, Congress passed the Student, Teachers, and Officers Preventing (STOP) School Violence Act of 2018. This bill authorized $75 million for FY18, and $100 million annually for the next ten years in grant money toward training and equipment for students, school personnel, and law enforcement.

As you may know, President Trump has called on Congress to enact a red-flag law, and Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham is expected to introduce red-flag legislation. These laws generally operate by allowing law enforcement to obtain an extreme risk protection order (ERPO) for an individual who is an imminent danger to themselves or others. Americans have a right to due process, and red-flag laws which are not narrowly tailored are at risk of violating our constitutional rights. We need a framework that makes sense, is community-based, and protects the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens. As a member of the Judiciary Committee, I have told Chairman Graham I will do anything to help in developing sensible solutions. I am hopeful we can find a reasonable and sustainable policy that addresses gun violence while honoring the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens.

I believe we all share the same goal: to have safe communities. I am supportive of common-sense measures to prevent dangerous criminals and severely mentally ill individuals from having access to firearms. I welcome a discussion of ideas to make our communities safer from violence, as well as a thoughtful and compassionate discussion on ways to improve our mental health system. While there are strongly-held opinions on these issues, I believe a healthy dialogue is long overdue, and I am optimistic we can find additional bipartisan common sense solutions moving forward....

Sincerely,
Thom Tillis (R-NC)
U.S. Senator
Stop the Slaughter

Dear Senator Tillis

"metal health" is an ammosexual red herring. Scientific studies consistently blame mass shootings on civilian gun ownership. More guns translate into more mass shootings, not less, whereas the vast majority of people with mental illness are not violent. Only 3%-5% of violent acts are attributed to mental illness, and most don’t involve guns.
Mental illness isn't a major risk factor for gun violence, but here's what is
People who have a history of risky or dangerous behavior are far more likely to commit gun violence than a person diagnosed with mental illness.
https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-n ... e-n1039666
A tiny fraction of gun violence is committed by the mentally ill
Drug and alcohol abuse are much more important factors than, say, schizophrenia.
https://www.vox.com/2015/10/1/18000532/ ... al-illness
Mental illness isn't main driver of mass shootings, experts say
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/el-paso-da ... l-illness/

You really need to get a better class of liars on your staff.

Anyhow, both in the Leg and Congress YOU have been a major impediment to adequate metal health funding. As an ER RN I’ve had to bear the consequences of your heartless poor choices.

Better reporting to the National Instant Background Checks System (NICS) is good. Of course, the red states that are beholden to the NRA like you are have been deliberately lousy at this.

Better training and equipment for students and school personnel is good. However, we know that the best way to stop the school slaughters is the stringent gun control that you resist.
What Explains U.S. Mass Shootings? International Comparisons Suggest an Answer
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/07/worl ... ional.html
US has 5 percent of world's population, but had 31 percent of its public mass shooters from 1966-2012, and a staggering 66% of mass shootings across 25 OECD nations.

Effect of Gun Culture and Firearm Laws on Gun Violence and Mass Shootings in the United States: A Multi-Level Quantitative Analysis
http://www.sascv.org/ijcjs/pdfs/Lemieux ... issue1.pdf
Shame on you for your inaction.

An incorrect ERPO can be remedied in court. Plus, if things are so bad that friends, coworkers or family are lying about the gun owner, it’s best to at least temporarily remove guns from the situation. There are no constitutional rights at issue, and I’m disappointed by your weasel words.

You never say what your position is on universal background checks in general or the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019 that McConnell is blocking. Coward.

We do NOT “share the same goal”. Yours is unpatriotic obeisance to the NRA, and deflection from anything that challenges it. Shame on you.

I await your reply.

Ohio First Graders Removed 'School Safety Gun' From Case In Administrative Office

Ohio school officials were stunned when they discovered that two first grade students had managed to remove a gun intended for school safety from an unlocked box in an administrative office, The Columbus Dispatch reported Friday.

The frightening incident underscores fears that plans to arm teachers supported by President Donald Trump and the National Rifle Association could end up instead putting guns in children’s — or an untrustworthy teacher’s — hands, with catastrophic consequences. Trump wants 20% of teachers armed even though 59% of Americans don’t want any teachers packing guns in schools....

The 6-year-old students managed to obtain a gun belonging to the transportation director. She left her gun in an unlocked case in her office near Highland Elementary School in Sparta — along with her grandson and the first grade daughter of an assistant — when she went to use the restroom. When the director returned, the gun was on a desk and the two children were playing nearby, the newspaper reported.

School superintendent Dan Freund told the Dispatch he assumed the children had removed the gun and were holding it before they put the weapon down. He said he became “physically sick” when he heard what had happened. “People were horrified, ” he added.

Law enforcement authorities were not informed of the incident.

The transportation director was removed from the school’s concealed weapons program and suspended without pay for three days, according to the newspaper....
The article doesn't say, but from the reaction it sounds like the gun was loaded.

After back to back shootings, Trump called for red flag laws. Here's what they are.

Dang, along with supporting universal background checks, Trump has gone liberal on the ammosexuals, thus creating a crisis for perpetually ovine Trumpettes. They shouldn’t fret, the lifelong cowardly Chickenhawk in Chief will flip-flop again after Faux Noise and/or the NRA scolds him.
Sometimes, I hate being correct.

A new Republican poll shows that three out of four suburban women want stronger gun safety laws, and gun violence stood out as the No. 1 issue for those voters, ahead of health care and immigration. It’s not hard to see why. Mothers who send children off to school in the morning, whether they’re in kindergarten or high school, face the fearful reality that those children might never return.

Here are some of the specifics of the poll, according to a story in The Washington Post:

72% of the women polled want stricter gun laws.
55% say stricter laws would cut gun violence.
90% want universal background checks.
88% want a longer waiting period for gun sales.
84% want a national red flag law.
76% want bans on assault-style weapons.
72% want bans on high-capacity magazines.
The poll was done for the Republican Main Street Partnership,
