Fire/EMS/ERs/disasters, etc.

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

An acre is a decent measure for a residential or commercial property, or some farmers' fields, but why do they report fires in acres? They're saying the Palisades fire is 17,000 acres. I have no idea how big that is. Oh yeah, Alexa says it's about 26 square miles or some variation of 3 miles wide and 8 miles long, or 5 miles square. Makes a lot more vivid understanding of the huge range of this. And that's just one of the fires.
Palisades and Eaton fires together are about the size of the city of San Francisco. :o

The fire map folks are lapsing.
Eaton Fire reports "Containment 0%", but has not added acres since yesterday morning, 10,600 acres.
Palisades Fire also reports "Containment 0%", but has not added acres since yesterday evening, 17,234 acres.
Sunset Fire (Hollywood Hills) also reports "Containment 0%", 60 acres, but its map has lost the mandatory evacuation and evacuation warning coloration.

:wtf: It's all worse that we can tell from the CAL FIRE website at the moment. :(

It's not just homes in the hills, downtown Palisades on Sunset Boulevard was torched.

Before and after Sat photos of both the Palisades Fire at the PCH and Altadena (Eaton Fire):

"junior science exam"? Rogan would fail an elementary school science exam.

Triple karma.
Gibson was already a homophobic, antisemitic, racist ass;
AGW denial;
Hanging out with Joe Rogan.

It's almost like it's coordinated - RepuQs casting about for dubious and dumb reasons to blame Dems when the significant contribution of AGW, which RWers love, is undeniable.

Move over, Hellene (another AGW-related event :think: ). TV news: "One of the most destructive natural disasters in US history." :o

Pol on TV: The destroyed Altadena neighborboods - Eaton Fire 14,117 Acres 15% Contained, 6 dead - are largely African American due to redlining. Their homes were their generational wealth. Now, their insurance, if they have any, is.

Strong winds return tonight, red flag warnings through Wednesday, new evacuations, tony Brentwood threatened. Crap.

Santa Ana winds are common. Wildfires have been common for years. Never before have the fires reached densely populated areas, and never before have winds of that speed and magnitude combined with bone-dry vegetation and single-digit humidity. Usual fire-fighting practices were hampered by unusual conditions. Too much wind to fly helicopters, and water/retardant wouldn't even fall vertically because of the wind. Hydrants intended to handle a one or two-house fire were being tapped for entire neighborhoods. I'm sure there will be fingers pointing all around, but really, there could not reasonably be any different preparation for this event because there were too many unknown variables.

Definition of "act of god."

There's no infrastructure in the world that is set up for something like this. Are they going to spend hundreds of billions of dollars to upgrade the infrastructure for next time whenever that is?
