And when in doubt, consult Macon Leary.O Really wrote: ↑Mon Dec 20, 2021 11:58 amAnd some if not most of the items on the list aren't even right, depending on where you are. F'rinstance, you can get ranch dressing (Newman's Own) at Sainsbury's throughout England. You can get barbeque in places like Jimmy's in York that may not be exactly like what you got in America but is as good if not better than any you'd get anywhere else not named North Carolina, St. Louis, Memphis, or Texas. It doesn't matter as much that petrol is more expensive than in America because there is public transportation everywhere and people are less dependent on cars.
Typical jingoistic drivel. Same as people who go from one region to another in the US and complain it isn't just like where they were. They never heard the expression "travel is broadening"? Or maybe they just think that's because their ass gets fatter eating all that candy, sugar-cereal, and huge servings.

I've spent a fair bit of time in Europe. Some of these criticisms seem overly harsh, but I can't actually say that they're untrue. Also, I'm not sure that some of the items reflect positively on the US.

To be accurate some of the entries were written by Europeans, though the person choosing what to publish is likely American. 1, 2. I don't think I ever tried Mexican food or barbeque in Europe. I was more likely to seek out European dishes.
3. "There are no Florida Man stories in Europe." - That's a plus for Europe.
4. The outlets are different. Plan ahead.
5. Tap water is safe in most of Europe, and I had no problem asking for "normal water". However, it can get you a fish eye.
6. I like Euro coins and never went to a strip club there.
7, 28. It's greener to have smaller homes and appliances. That's not a dis of Europe.
8. Idk about garbage disposals. Maybe composting is easier in Europe? Most other recycling is - it's often mandated.
9, 31. I like college sports, but we do go overboard. Maybe youth club sports are bigger in Europe? They're certainly able to compete internationally. Same for "Extracurricular activities at school."
10, 12, 22. US candy selection, sugar in American breakfasts, "Hot pockets and pizza rolls," and portion sizes are not necessarily good things, and European bakeries are better.
11. I do like AC.
13. I've never lived with an automatic ice dispenser in a refrigerator, wouldn't miss them in Europe.
14. Who cares if Europeans don't like root beer?
15. I think we are more individualistic here. It can manifest as initiative or selfishness.
16. I was happy with ice cream selections in Europe, but we may indeed have more varieties.
17. Right turns on red. Maybe because Europe has more walkers and bikers? If so, point Europe.
18. The number of choices in the cereal and other aisles here is ridiculous. I never went hungry in Europe.
19, 23, 26. "Wide open space," Grand Canyon, ecological diversity - True, wild America rocks.
20. "The cheap price of gas" = American waste and lack of public transportation. Point Europe.
21. "Drive thru everything!" - I use drive thrus, but don't miss them when not available.
24, 32. "Ranch dressing," "Dipping sauce and condiments." - Like them, never missed them.
25. Late night diners - I did okay in Europe, but maybe we do have more.
29, 30. "Massive tubs of cheap peanut butter," "International food" - Could be. I never went hungry in Europe.
33. "Boozy Sunday brunch." - I never had a problem getting drunk in Europe.
34. "You can drive anywhere on half the continent without a passport, knowing only one language." - Pffft, mostly the same in Europe.
35. "24 hour grocery stores" - Pffft, plan better.
For the most part I just see comparisons, not the jingoism that y'all see. I'm sure Europeans can make lists of things they can't find here.

Not sure about other regional food, but there are Middle Eastern and South Asian restaurants and delis everywhere. The author is at least partially wrong.

I might even have sensed it down here.

Six is next door to BIG.
But the quake pros say the tectonic plates in that area are like "warm cookies", so not to worry.

Snowpidity and Google Maps are prime culprits.Hundreds of drivers get stuck in the snowy Sierra Nevada after trying to bypass closed highways
... “When people don’t normally drive in these conditions or they’re not seeing the signs that require chains, then they just end up in chest-high snow in a Honda Civic," said Parent. "And it’s not going to work."

You could have eventually entered Canada last summer, but it opened up too late to do so. Now, I wouldn't call it certain this coming summer.

I know, I've thought US warnings about other nations have been odd all along. It's just that this article made me think that a repeat Canada ban lasting into the summer is possible, something that we might have thought wasn't going to happen again.O Really wrote: ↑Tue Jan 11, 2022 10:42 amYeah, it would be awful to go into an area with the same level as the US.

I'm glad we were able to visit the places and see the things we have before the handbasket picks up speed. Parks are outrageously crowded, and trashed from general lack of respect and assholiness of visitors. States are being run by the craziest available candidates. We're thinking we may not have much reason to leave the states of California, Oregon, and Washington and the province of British Columbia. There's a lot to see and a lot to do in those places and we can smile to ourselves everytime we realize we can avoid Repug-run states for the rest of our lives.

I don't think it's free camping, but we've got the park pass to get in everywhere and got it when it was still $10 instead of after Trump raised it to $80 Good for life. But having a pass doesn't really get you in anymore to some of the parks. You have to also get a reservation and even then sometimes like at Arches or Zion there's a waiting line.neoplacebo wrote: ↑Sat Jan 29, 2022 1:30 pmI read something on the internet a couple weeks ago that said US military veterans can now get free admission to all US national parks. I just thought you may not have heard about this so wanted to mention it. Actually I don't think I've ever been to a national park unless the Jefferson National Forest in Virginia or the Pisgah National Forest in NC are but I think those are administered by the Forest Service instead of the Park Service. I guess it's part of that deep state shit.O Really wrote: ↑Sat Jan 29, 2022 1:40 pmI don't think it's free camping, but we've got the park pass to get in everywhere and got it when it was still $10 instead of after Trump raised it to $80 Good for life. Well, some of the best places in California are national parks or monuments: Yosemite, for example. Hiked the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne from the reservoir up to Tuolumne Meadows, three times. And I've been all over Piinnacles National Monument. Mostly in high school, but a few times since to take friends. We only get one chance on earth, might as well enjoy as much of it while we can.

Glad to hear it. I myself have two "another chance on earth" cards so I have lots of time to check out those places later on when the herd thins out.
