Idk, Rick Scott was Gov for 8 years. Seems to me that he can be blamed for anything bad that he didn't fix, even if its origins go back to Jeb then Charlie Crist. Anyhow, y'all have elected crappy Govs for at least 21.5 years.billy.pilgrim wrote: ↑Sat Apr 25, 2020 8:14 amCan't blame fraudster scott for this one, it's been almost impossible to get unemployment benefits in Florida since Jeb. Florida Elections...
Trump's name will stay above Biden's on Florida's 2020 ballot, appeals court rules
I can't argue with the court ruling based on a technicality, but how fucked up is a "1951 law, which says a candidate's position on the ballot is determined by the party of the governor in office"?
It should be random for every race every year. That said, idk how NC decides, but I haven't heard of anyone complaining.

I have problems with the technicality that claims no one anywhere ever has standing to bring suit.
Were all 3 judges trump appointments - i haven't seen which ones were involved - at least 6 are trumpers

Standing is the ability of a party to bring a lawsuit in court based upon their stake in the outcome. A party seeking to demonstrate standing must be able to show the court sufficient connection to and harm from the law or action challenged. Otherwise, the court will rule that you "lack standing" to bring the suit and dismiss your case.
There are three constitutional requirements to prove standing:
Injury: The plaintiff must have suffered or imminently will suffer injury. The injury must not be abstract and must be within the zone of interests meant to be regulated or protected under the statutory or constitutional guarantee in question.
Causation: The injury must be reasonably connected to the defendant’s conduct.
Redressability: A favorable court decision must be likely to redress the injury.
There are other requirements imposed by case law:
A party may only assert his or her own rights and cannot raise the claims of a third party who is not before the court.
A plaintiff cannot sue as a taxpayer who shares a grievance in common with all other taxpayers.

I don’t know if the Pryors are related, but she was in Georgia before joining the Eleventh Circuit, not his Alabama.

So, are there no means that this suit could have been brought?
And wouldn't:
The Democratic National Committee, Democratic Governors Association, Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee and the liberal group Priorities USA brought the suit against Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner.
And the three Democratic activists who joined the lawsuit as plaintiffs,
have known how to craft a suit so it wouldn't be thrown out on a technicality

If I was in FL I would want the law changed, but I would have to read her dissent to opine on the ruling and I don't have the patience for that. Maybe voting Dem will get the law changed . . . or maybe they'll decide they like it, after all

Re: A Florida Man...
One would think that all those people would know (or learn) what to do. But IMNVHO, it would be a stretch. You'd pretty much have to have an actual candidate bring the suit, and that would need to be a candidate who lost and who somehow could show that his loss was due to his placement on the ballot, and that the ballot placement was itself some violation of rights or law or something. Gillium might have been one to use, as he was undoubtedly not at the top, and he lost by a tiny margin. But he'd still have to show some wrongdoing in the ballot ordering process. And in defence, it probably wouldn't be too hard to find numerous elections in which the top listed candidate did not win.billy.pilgrim wrote: ↑Fri May 01, 2020 11:53 am

I wonder how many states had shut down by then.

Shame on them, especially if people are gathering in large numbers.

Agreed, but the article also discusses how they were getting mixed messages from "leaders" like DeSantis.

Here's a day by day timeline of the virus in Florida. Looks like DeSantis went astray on March 5 when, despite warnings to the contrary, downplayed the risk (apparently spouting the preferred Trump talking points). Suppose he had thought for himself, read the reports from the scientists, and then looked at the Spring Break places, he might have thought "Oh shit, we need to do something quickly. But instead, he watched the mayor in Jaws while he waited for Trump's instructions. If he has now ended up so far with a lower than expected infection/death rate, it is more in spite of him than because of him.

Florida shatters daily record with 3,207 new coronavirus cases
Poor billy.pilgrim, he may not get any relief from New Yorkers this summer, and they'll all be bitchin' about the heat.In 'full 180,' Gov. Cuomo considers quarantine for people traveling from Florida to New York
... “If you went to Florida, you had to quarantine for two weeks because they were afraid that New Yorkers were bringing the virus to their state,” Cuomo said Thursday, according to the Daily News. “You want to talk about a full 180. Fast forward a 100 days, now we’re afraid they’re bringing the virus to our state.”
Florida likely won’t be the only state affected by the move, if Cuomo decides to enact it. New York may require people traveling from any states seeing upticks to quarantine, the Daily News reported. He also has not made a determination as of Thursday night.
“I haven’t made a decision yet, but I have had experts advise me of that. It is a real concern,” Cuomo said. “It could happen, and it’s something I’m considering.”
As spring turns to summer, snowbirds who came to Florida for the winter and delayed their return home would likely be affected by the decision, if finalized.
And while it’s difficult to track the exact number of New York residents that migrate south for the winter, Florida generally gains more than 800,000 residents each winter, mostly from New York, and that number grows each year, according to the Gerontological Society of America....

Looks like a walking catfish, not sure why the author didn't know.

They are a thing - especially in South Florida
Wiki
"In the United States, it is established in Florida.[7] It is reported in California, Connecticut, Georgia, Massachusetts, and Nevada. The walking catfish was imported to Florida, reportedly from Thailand, in the early 1960s for the aquaculture trade."
