It's the economy, stupid.

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

If one believes DHS numbers, which of course no rational person would do, In 2025, over 622,000+ non documented people were removed from the U.S.. The administration* also claimed that over 2.5 million undocumented people left the U.S. (including self-deportations) between January and December 2025. Overall net migration may have been negative, with more people leaving the country than entering.

Also, they have managed to scare an unknown (or untold) number of people out of the potential workforce, while still remaining in country. Probably "deported millions" is a bit of exaggeration and not technically accurate, but the overall effect of loss to the labor market supports the comment.

When did they succeed at "deporting millions"? I must have missed it. :headscratch:

Thanks for the answer.

Three House Republicans cross party lines to block effort to shield Trump from challenges to his tariffs

Speaker Mike Johnson failed to reinstate a ban on lawmakers’ ability to challenge President Donald Trump’s tariffs when three Republicans crossed party lines to vote with Democrats.

The House sank a procedural vote on Tuesday that contained language blocking votes in the chamber that object to Trump’s tariffs through July. The move opens the door for Democrats to move forward with forcing votes to repeal Trump’s tariffs, in a blow to the administration.

... The Senate has passed at least three resolutions rebuking Trump’s tariffs, but routinely ran into resistance in the House where members were blocked from forcing votes on the matter.

Bacon said in a statement posted to X, “I don’t like putting the important work of the House on pause, but Congress needs to be able to debate on tariffs.”

The Nebraska congressman went on to say, “tariffs have been a ‘net negative’ for the economy and are a significant tax that American consumers, manufacturers, and farmers are paying. Article I of the Constitution places authority over taxes and tariffs with Congress for a reason, but for too long, we have handed that authority to the executive branch. It’s time for Congress to reclaim that responsibility.”

Confidence remains low, but they do have positive numbers they can point to. It's a mystery to me.

Statistics may not lie, but statisticians do.
Anyway, taking only an isolated measure (such as Dow) is like reporting that a football team is having a great day because they scored three touchdowns in the first quarter, nevermind that by the fourth quarter they're down by 35 points and their QB has been sacked 6 times and is now in the blue tent.

True about the stock indexes, even if they don't get sacked. Gains don't necessarily translate to Americans being better off. However, inflation has been manageable all year and:

Jobs report lands with surprising 130,000 positions added to US economy last month
Job growth surpasses 100,000 for the first time since early 2025

Biden averaged over 330,000 jobs per month; Obama about 225,000.

"Trump's 2025 performance was described as the weakest job growth outside of a recession since 2003." (in yet another repug admin)

I could've sworn DonOld told us they were cut in half.

US trade deficit surged in December, ending 2025 nearly identical to 2024 after year of erratic Trump tariff policy

The new reading came just hours after Trump claimed that trade deficits were already down and offered a bold prediction for 2026 that the trade deficit would "go into positive territory during this year, for the first time in many decades."
