The Music Thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

So here's one that probably should be posted under the "guilty" or "embarrassing" music thread, but I've got my reasons in the form of fond memories of long summer days enjoying Indian Lake in Denville, NJ with "my little one." We "swam in the cove" "got a snack in the grove", paddled a canoe, and baked in the sun.

So I guess they'd have to change this one too, since there are "woo-woos" in the song and other Indian references, but "my" Indian Lake is still there, with all the streets around it named for Indian tribes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Lake_(New_Jersey)
Oh god, I thought those nightmares were finally behind me. Thanks a lot. :x

I'd check in with the local Indians, but I don't see anything particularly offensive about the lake name or the song. However, I would ban The Cowsills on general principle - no offense to your family memories. :D

Lyrics
I don't know about lakes, but false waterways are often called "Indian", as is the case with the Indian River area in Florida, where the high priced Indian River citrus that's all the rave is grown.

I had an unintentional tour of Indian River County years ago. Driving north on the turnpike, I missed my exit at Ft. Pierce and couldn't get off again until Yeehaw Junction. I don't remember the road I took back, but the drive through the groves was really (almost) worth the trip.

Indian River refers to the Sound - which isn't a river.

My ex's family traveled by wagon along the beach in the late 1800s. They settled in Ft Pierce, bringing the population to 34.

Yeah - here's the rest of that story. I did like the song, and still do, but until that vid popped up on my random list, I had never actually seen the band. Sorta put a smudge on the memories. :o

Never heard that song, and barely remember the "Cowsills"... Were they one of the "happy family" acts of the 60's? Like the Partridge Family?
David Cassidy got mixed up with those Partridges and look what happened to him. I knew it the whole time, which is why I never gave Partridges or Cowsills anything other than scorn. And if The Brady Bunch were a motorcycle gang, they'd probably still be relevant.

My prediction

Lady A(nti-bellum) offers to allow the original Lady A to use her name - because, why can't we all just be friends

Not sure of the details, but I damn sure nailed the tone.

https://www.eonline.com/news/article/11 ... ame-change

"Today, we connected privately with the artist Lady A. Transparent, honest, and authentic conversations were had,"

Everything is cool

https://www.newsday.com/entertainment/m ... 1.45795425

"Lady A says an agreement announced between herself and the country-music trio Lady A, formerly Lady Antebellum, was premature and a breach of good faith.

"I received a draft agreement from the Antebellum camp," Seattle-based blues/gospel singer Anita White, 61, told Newsday in an email Tuesday. "I'm not happy about [it] yet again after talking in good faith. … Their camp is trying to erase me'"

Or not

The Antebellums are suing the mean black lady who won't give up her stage name.

I don't know who runs the business/legal part of the band formerly known as Lady Antebellum, but generally somebody would do a trademark/copyright search before going public with a name. Of course, maybe the band members just did it themselves without thinking, since "Lady A" is in fact their nickname among fans. I'm guessing some money will be thrown, some mumblings will be made, and everybody goes back to their business (or sorta-business, as in the case of Seattle lady).

Could be that the real Lady A never trademarked. If so, her bad, but it's still rude to take her name. Hopefully, it won't get nasty and she'll be able to comfortably retire from Seattle Public Utilities early. Trademark or not, the band probably doesn't want to look like villains.

Well, my guess isn't totally out of whack. Apparently the band did some research/registration of "Lady A" back in 2010, and they aren't asking for any money out of old Lady A - just a definitive ruling. I still say there will be mumblings, some money tossed, and everybody goes back to work.

I think suing her still looks bad. It's not like she has lawyer money.

I agree, but sometimes there aren't many alternatives. They could have gone for mediation or binding arbitration, but apparently old Lady A wasn't having any of it. Anyway, some lawyer that enjoys David/Goliath contests will take her defence pro bono.

True, and/or counter-sue for contingency. She must be demanding a hell of a lot for the distraction and PR hit to be worth it to the usurpers . . . or they're fools for not just ponying up.

I've never heard either; however, I'll have to spend a buck or 2 on the original. I hope she does very well in the end.

I know that their fans probably don't care if they sue the black person, so they'll do fine. It's not like they lied about not understanding the word Antebellum, they could be too stupid to know. I wish them all the worst.

She offered to be Lady A the Artist and asked them to be The Band Lady A, or Lady A and the Band. Seems easy enough. Why would the group need the singular name?

But, I see the crackers winning.

OK, so I'm out of sympathy for the Old Lady A. Turns out the band formerly known as Lady Antebellum did indeed get a trademark to use "Lady A" for their entertainment and merch business, and had used it as an informal nickname for years before that. Old Lady A had also been using it - it is her name, after all - for years too, but nobody know or cared because her audience is fairly small. Nobody is going to confuse her music with the band or vice versa. But Old Lady A got poor advice from some lawyer and dug her feet in and wanted $10 mill - $10 milion! - for the band formerly known as Lady Antebellum to use a name they had trademarked. And they're not asking for anything out of Old Lady A. It does look bad for everybody, though, for a somewhat meaningless gesture supposedly to support Black issues turns into the millionaires beating up on a poor old Black lady.
