The Cinema Thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

MAGAts are whiny idiots who are too lazy to google or Wiki:

MAGA Pundit Accuses ‘Wicked’ of ‘Racism’ After Falsely Suggesting Ariana Grande Is Hispanic

:---P AG is fully Italian-American.

:laughing-rolling: It looks like someone hacked MAGAt Gina Loudon's Wiki page, preserved here because it may rapidly get edited out of Wiki.
Personal life

... On November 27, 2024, Loudon announced she was diagnosed with a condition that is rapidly spreading, Misattributive Ethno-Identification Disorder (MEID)[19]. This condition is described as a neurocognitive phenomenon characterized by the systematic misclassification of ethnic or cultural identities, particularly among high-profile individuals in public-facing roles. While not physically harmful, MEID often results in widespread social embarrassment and public scrutiny. Ironic triggers include heightened exposure to diverse media combined with limited cultural literacy, and symptoms may intensify in live broadcast environments. Medical humorists have noted that MEID is frequently preceded by a related condition known as MAGA Syndrome (Mad About Generally Anything), a tongue-in-cheek diagnosis used to describe individuals prone to indiscriminate irritation and impulsive public opinions.

Critics have questioned the legitimacy of MEID as a formal diagnosis, viewing it instead as a satirical commentary on cultural awareness and media gaffes. However, its growing popularity as a cultural touchpoint underscores the need for improved media literacy and self-awareness among public figures.

Is "Challenged" a discriminatory word?

I happened to navigate to the Wiki page of:
Charles Bronson

Poverty-stricken Depression-era son of a coal miner;
"He was the 11th of 15 children born into a Roman Catholic family of Lithuanian descent. The very large family slept in shifts in their cold-water shack."
Father died of cancer when he was 12;
"He said he had to wear his elder sister's dress to school for lack of clothing."
Coal miner;
B-29 Superfortress aerial gunner over Japan, Purple Heart.

The famous Hollywood tough guy paid his irl dues. :-||

Speaking of Charles Bronson, Death Wish meets John Wick, with max body count:
Nobody
2021 R 1h 32m

A docile family man slowly reveals his true character after his house gets burgled by two petty thieves, which, coincidentally, leads him into a bloody war with a Russian crime boss.

IMDb RATING 7.4/10
Tomatometer 75%
Popcornmeter 94%

Critics Consensus

Nobody doesn't break any new ground for the genre, but this viscerally violent thriller smashes, shatters, and destroys plenty of other things -- all while proving Bob Odenkirk has what it takes to be an action star.

Audience Says

Grab some popcorn, action fans -- if you're in the mood for creative stunts and a funny, violent, fast-paced story, Nobody delivers.
  FYI, any movie where Christopher Lloyd wields multiple shotguns is a GREAT movie!

Speed meets Heat . . . and Eiza González!
Ambulance

Tomatometer 68%
Popcornmeter 87%

Over one day across the streets of L.A., three lives will change forever. In this breakneck thriller from director-producer Michael Bay, decorated veteran Will Sharp (Emmy winner Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Candyman, The Matrix Resurrections), desperate for money to cover his wife's medical bills, asks for help from the one person he knows he shouldn't--his adoptive brother Danny (Oscar® nominee Jake Gyllenhaal, Zodiac, Spider-Man: Far From Home). A charismatic career criminal, Danny instead offers him a score: the biggest bank heist in Los Angeles history: $32 million. With his wife's survival on the line, Will can't say no. But when their getaway goes spectacularly wrong, the desperate brothers hijack an ambulance with a wounded cop clinging to life and ace EMT Cam Thompson (Eiza González, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, Baby Driver) onboard. In a high-speed pursuit that never stops, Will and Danny must evade a massive, city-wide law enforcement response, keep their hostages alive, and somehow try not to kill each other, all while executing the most insane escape L.A. has ever seen.

The Righteous Gemstones:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Righteous_Gemstones
The Righteous Gemstones is an American comedy-drama television series created by Danny McBride that premiered on August 18, 2019, on HBO. The series follows a famous and dysfunctional family of televangelists. It stars McBride, Adam DeVine, Edi Patterson, Tony Cavalero, Cassidy Freeman, Gregory Alan Williams, Tim Baltz, and John Goodman.

...

The Righteous Gemstones depicts a family of televangelists and megachurch pastors led by widowed patriarch Eli Gemstone. Eli and his immature children, Jesse, Judy and Kelvin, lead opulent lives funded by church donations.

In the first season, Eli's estranged brother-in-law, Baby Billy Freeman, is brought in to lead the Gemstones' new shopping-mall-based satellite church, which leads to a conflict with Rev. John Wesley Seasons whose smaller, neighboring church is threatened. Concurrently, a trio of masked figures blackmail Jesse with a scandalous video documenting the lewd behavior of him and his best friends.
So far so good 😊

It's really annoying and IMNVHO disrespectful when they refer to the ones not winning the award as "losers." Yeah, grammatically it may be correct in that they didn't receive the award they were competing for, but c'mon - they are recognized for a major part in a film of some substance, and nominated for the award. There has to be a better word than "loser."

An Oscar-challenged multi-nominee ;) :
'The Susan Lucci Of The Academy Awards' Loses For 16th Straight Time

Oscar nominee Diane Warren lost for the 16th time on Sunday, drawing sympathy from fans on social media.

Warren, a songwriter, pinned her hopes on “The Journey,” her 16th Best Original Song nomination, to perhaps break one of the longest hard-luck streaks in show business.

One fan on Bluesky called her “the Susan Lucci of the Academy Awards,” referring to the “All My Children” star who lost 18 times as a Daytime Emmy lead actress nominee before finally winning in 1999....

It didn’t happen, putting her closer to the 17 Oscar nominations without a win suffered by sound mixer Greg P. Russell. (His 17th nomination was withdrawn because he called academy members from the sound branch during the nominations period, Entertainment Weekly noted.)...

Bummer. Must be wondering if she should even bother attending.

Vengeance
R, Released Jul 29, 2022, 1h 47m, Comedy/Mystery & Thriller/Drama/Horror

Tomatometer 75%, Popcornmeter 86%

Vengeance, the directorial debut from writer and star B.J. Novak ("The Office"), is a darkly comic thriller about Ben Manalowitz, a journalist and podcaster who travels from New York City to West Texas to investigate the death of a girl he was hooking up with.

Critics Consensus
Writer-director-star B.J. Novak (The Office) could have taken a sharper approach to this dark comedy's deeper themes, but if you're in the mood for a slyly smart mystery, Vengeance is yours.

Audience Says
Underneath its quirky premise, Vengeance has some interesting things to say about modern society.
I agree
Not your typical Mystery & Thriller.
Not your stereotypical West Texas.
Heady stuff. Very philosophic, in an entertaining way.

I saw it in the theater. Don't go to many movies but that one deserved the full screen experience.
