Can Someone Explain This to Me?
Can Someone Explain This to Me? I admit I'm not the brightest bulb in the chandelier, but whose constitutional rights are being squashed? This appears to be an old fart "squatting" on land rights he hasn't had in twenty years , lost numerous court challenges and crying like a wounded animal.
WTF?

I've been reading a little bit about this, so take this with a grain of salt.GoCubsGo wrote:Can Someone Explain This to Me? Basically, the guy grazes his cattle on public (?) land. Ranchers are allowed to graze cattle on public land for a small fee, which is measured in AMU. AMU = the amount of vegetation a cattle can consume in one month. I think the BLM charges something like $1.35 per AMU, which from what I've read is incredibly cheap versus what the guy would pay to graze his cattle on private land, which goes for something like ~$15/AMU.
It sounds like this guy doesn't want to play by the rules. It's public land he's grazing his cattle on, so he should pay. If the land wasn't public, it would be owned by some private entity which would probably charge way more than $1.35/AMU, or he wouldn't be able to graze cattle on the land at all.
I can't wait to see what kind of monstrosity this story gets beaten into once more people get wind of it and start shooting it up with their political view.

I'm getting all that, what's got all the militia groups stirred up by his "constitutional rights" being trampled on besides we hate the federal government? Is it a just a nice day for a revolt?

Maybe they know more than I do about the whole situation, so maybe they have some valid reason why they're so pissed.GoCubsGo wrote:I'm getting all that, what's got all the militia groups stirred up by his "constitutional rights" being trampled on besides we hate the federal government? But knowing how people operate, it's probable that it's got to do what you're saying:
"Here's this rancher getting trampled on by big government. This fits our narrative perfectly. Grab some pitchforks boys we're in for a fight."
I have friends like this. I probably do the same thing. For instance, one guy I know is highly religious and sees all current events in the terms of the end of times. If your main orientation is big government vs. personal freedom/libertarianism you're going to do the same. All current events and news will be interpreted within that framework. Hence the militia groups getting pissed off and supporting the rancher. Like I said, I've only skimmed this so maybe the rancher really is in the right.

Word on the street is the BLM is trying to clear Bundy's cattle off the land so fracking can commence. That's kind of jacked if that's the case. No word from any reputable resource though.

Bottom line, it's public land (read, "government owned"), and there's a fee for using it, just like visiting the Grand Canyon. Enforcement has been gentle for a way too long time, but the guy has no rights, under any legal theory other than an imagined "grandfather" right to graze his cattle for free. His claim is like saying his rights under the Constitution are being infringed because his "pursuit of happiness" under the Declaration of Independence is limited by the jackbooted tyrants. But of course it's Obama's fault and the jackboots will try to take their guns and force health insurance on them while they're confiscating his cattle.

BLM recently auctioned off frackiing leases in that area.JTA wrote:Word on the street is the BLM is trying to clear Bundy's cattle off the land so fracking can commence. That's kind of jacked if that's the case. No word from any reputable resource though.
Whether that had any influence on the current situation is conjecture.

When did Natural News (a blog at best) become a reputable source?

Liberty Unyielding, terrific, an op-ed piece from a right wing site that has what appears to be two contributors, so obscure that no one has even bothered to do a Wiki page on it. Maybe there is something to the article, time will tell.
Could you please answer my original question, the rancher has no claim to the land in fee simple or leasehold terms, in this country of laws, due process was followed (hell, he "squatted" the land for twenty years) throughout the court system. How are his rights violated? What is so damn patriotic about an armed standoff with BLM over land he has no legal interest in?
As an aside, I'm glad common sense "steered" the confrontation away from bloodshed, this herd was stampeding towards a cliff.

Personally, I wouldn't mind if they did go over the cliff. I figure a lot of them want to anyway. Dumbasses.

Re: Can Someone Explain This to Me?
The yahoos wanted to create some sort of Waco event out of it. BLM (rightly IMNVHO) decided the fees weren't worth all that. However, backing down will make it harder to ever get compliance out of this guy or his slobbering wild-eyed friends.
