but I still feel partially responsible for what happened in 2000, when I also voted for the best candidate

Only if you were in a swing state, otherwise it didn't matter.

I've sent more money to Bernie than I ever have a POTUS candidate, but voting for Hillary in the general won't kill me.

No, 3 reasons:

Breaking the glass ceiling for women is a good thing regardless of who does it. It's time we caught up with India, Pakistan, Brasil, Bangladesh and Indonesia.
I've already accepted that she will be the next POTUS.
The GOP candidate will be so awful that my vote will be easy.
