Roof Rack, Kayak

Unread post by JTA »

Looking for a decent (and cheap) roof rack for my car. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks.

I don't know about installation on a "car" (as opposed to an SUV with stock rails installed), but I've been using Yakima gear for years on different vehicles and I've never lost a 'yak yet. Here's their set-up for a naked roof...

I don't use special adapters - just the rack, with two 'yaks upside down and strapped. I never understood the people who haul their boats top side up - if it rains, how do you get it down without getting drenched?

Can't say it's cheap, but it's way better than decent. Diamond Brand would be happy to help you with it.

Oh snap that is pricey. I'd rather have something that works though than have a kayak fly off my car. I've also been seeing Thule racks a lot. Maybe I can check out craigs-list.

Edit: Thanks!

Thule is good stuff, too. Just don't try putting the 'yak on the roof and trying to keep it there with duct tape.
