California accounted for nearly three-quarters of US jobs added in February

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

So I just realized I've been staying in Devin Nunes' congressional district for about a week, and still have most of a week to go in the district. He has from Fresno down to about Visalia in the Central Valley. So here's a real question: how in the Hell can a district that is Hispanic plurality and has an agricultural economy totally dependent on immigrants actually elect a fool like Nunes who backs Trump's racist anti-immigrant policies? I can't think of any reason right off unless they only let Caucasian Repugs vote.

Understood, but there are more Hispanics than Caucasians, and surely not all the Caucasians are rabidly right-wing enough to elect Nunes. I'd be interested in looking at the voting demographics. Gotta be either voter suppression or Hispanic lack of interest.

No apology necessary for Reagan. I didn't care for him politically, but overall he played a good role. I guess then only thing one needs to do to look like a great statesman is to wait until a Trump is elected.

Nunes represents a rural area of California. Generally speaking, the more populous coastal regions are far more liberal than the more conservative rural areas. Most likely the political power in his district is dominated by wealthy agribusiness interests, who have the financial clout to flood the region with pro-Republican propaganda. And even though there's a lot of immigrant labor that the agricultural sector depends upon, I suspect most white citizens there don't give a fig about the rights of the farm workers.

Nunes himself is of primarily Portuguese ancestry, but it's possible he tries to portray his Hispanic sounding name into votes from those Hispanics who can vote. And, remember, California has not always been a liberal leaning state. We sent Reagan to the governor's mansion, and then to the White House. Sorry about that, America.
California's 22nd congressional district

Wiki doesn't break down its demographics, but it's been red for awhile.
The vote for Nunes has been dropping, just 52.7% in 2018.
The Repug vote for POTUS has also been dropping since 2004, just 52.1% for 45SHOLE.

Given what's happening nationally and the trend in CA22, flipping blue for Rep. and POTUS in 2020 is a real possibility.

Perhaps some of us who live in California, and recently have had a lot of time freed up as a result of no longer being able to post on a certain den of conservative deplorables, could devote some our not inconsiderable powers of persuasion to canvass Nunes' district and help tip the balance in favor of someone more deserving of his spot in Congress?
Missionary work in the Central Valley? You're a brave man.

Literally:

10 shot, 4 killed at backyard football party in California

It’s not like it’s your tranquil and edenic East Bay ;) .

"Police were going door-to-door in search of surveillance video that might help them track down the suspects." Didn't they know they could get Google to send them a list of everybody who was within two miles of the shooting and just haul in everybody on it?

Getting one elected might be a trick, but finding someone "more deserving" of the spot would be very easy. Walk into any Walmart and point at the third person in line.

 My bad, the ethnicity is right there in the side bar:
42.4% white
2.8% black
7.3% Asian
44.8% Hispanic
2.8% other
If one assumes that white turnout is greatest, that Ag-heavy CA22 whites vote more con than the average for CA whites, that some of the Hispanics are not citizens, and that about 20% of the citizen Hispanics vote Repug, Nunes getting 52.7% is not so mysterious. Not sure about Asians these days - 50/50?

Top Dem says ethics investigation into Devin Nunes likely

The top Democrat on the House armed services committee said Saturday that Republican Rep. Devin Nunes is likely to face an ethics investigation over allegations he met with an ex-Ukrainian prosecutor at the center of the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump.

“Quite likely, without question,” House Armed Services Committee chairman Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash) said when asked by MSNBC’s Joy Reid whether Nunes (R-Calif.), the House Intelligence Committee’s top Republican and a longtime Trump ally, could be investigated.

CNN reported late Friday that an associate of Rudy Giuliani, the president's personal lawyer, has information on meetings Nunes allegedly had with former Ukrainian prosecutor general Victor Shokin.

The CNN report says that Lev Parnas, according to his attorney, put Nunes in touch with Shokin to help him gather damaging information on former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter's dealings with Ukraine.

Nunes called the CNN report “demonstrably false” in an interview with Breitbart....
