Secular and science groups have urged the Ohio Supreme Court to rule against John Freshwater, an eighth-grade science teacher who was fired for teaching creationism instead of evolution in class.
Why is it controversial to fire some1 for failing their job.

This dude's going down. But I don't see it so much as failing his job as being willfully insubordinate in a matter of policy and law.

Although I have reservations about the "branding" incident after reading a few stories, the teacher is undoubtedly a nutcase. He failed to follow the curriculum, and he proselytized. Seems like a no brainer to me. Too bad he doesn't have union thugs to protect him.
This piece reminds me of our former sheriff, the BoC, insurance, etc.

Boy's family, teacher settle arm-burning suit
The Mount Vernon Board of Education is not a party to the settlement, said schools attorney David Millstone. He said district officials don't know and aren't entitled to details of the deal.
"Even though the board carries the insurance policy, it has no authority to approve the settlement," Millstone said.
Because Zachary Dennis is a minor, the settlement details might be approved by Franklin County Probate Court, in which case they would be subject to public review, Millstone said.
There is little if any case law on whether school districts or the public are entitled to settlement information from insurance carriers related to lawsuits against teachers, said Hollie Reedy, a lawyer for the Ohio School Boards Association.

A teacher is hired to teach a body of knowledge from a curriculum selected by the people that hire the teacher. It is easy enough to insert points of disagreement for critical thinking without failing to follow instructions.
Every employee at any job is subject to termination if they fail to follow lawful instruction in the performance of their job.
I suspect this teacher was (is) grandstanding.
