Les Miserables

Movie of the musical comes out Christmas. Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean. Trailer looks really great. To get in the mood, try this version of "Can you hear the people sing" - not the original, but a truly rousing version...

I can hardly wait. Les Mis is one of my all time favorite Broadway shows. The film version will be revolutionary in its own right (pun intended) as the songs will not be lip-synched from the actor's prior recording, as has been Hollywood's practice. Link

Hugh Jackman has a very good singing voice, and it will be interesting to hear his performance. Ann Hathaway also is a good singer and the raw emotion I have seen on the trailer for the movie when she sings "I Dreamed a Dream" is captivating.

My favorite Jean Valjean is the operatic tenor Alfie Boe who did the role at the Les Mis 25th anniversary concert.

This cinematic adaptation of Victor Hugo's classic novel about revolution, redemption and love is not to be missed.

I had no idea Jackman could sing. He was on "60 Minutes" with an interview as well as segments from the film. I was also amazed and impressed that they filmed the singing live. Very talented and multi-skilled guy.

Movie Review

Too much singing-not enough dialogue? What does he want? A total re-write of the musical?

Don't know if you have been yet, counsellor, but I went today and it far exceeded my expectations. The music and acting were fabulous, and I predict many awards. Hugh Jackman's performance was fantastic,as was most of the cast. Russell Crowe gave a decent performance even though singing is not his strong suit.

I enjoyed this performance much better than the Broadway version that cost me over 50 times as much.

True, but the casting people did an excellent job. Cohen was great, as was his counterpart, Helena Carter. Honestly, almost every person was wonderful, and the movie was the best I have seen since Moulin Rouge.

It was every bit as excellent as I'd hoped. Sometimes operatic presentations suffer from too large a suspension of disbelief gap, like when the singing in a scene makes the drama seem trivial. There was none of that. The music and acting were fabulous. We'll be seeing it again - maybe again in the theatre even before it streams or DVDs.

Flat Rock Playhouse is going to have a tough act to follow this year.

Here's a review from a total idiot who obviously has never read even a Cliff's version of the book, much less the original B'way version... http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/c ... picks=true
